Sussy Antelopes

Im here to present a suspect no one is talking about. We all saw holes in the base game raster and were suspicious about the lack of certain animals or representation. No marsupials, no polarbear, no african rhino, almost none southamerican animals, etc. But theres one weird exclusion and hole in the raster i have never heard mentioned, and its regarding the choices of antelopes.
Lets step back and analyse them for a secound:

  • The black wildebeest, the largest antelope currently in the game (eventhough most people dont recognise them as antelopes), lives in the Savannah of south africa.
  • The Bongo, a medium sized antelope that lives in the woodlands of central africa
  • The Gemsbock, a medium to large sized Antelope, living in the desserts of southafrica
  • The nyala, a medium sized Antelope, living in the savannahs and woodlands of southeast africa
  • The sableantelope, a medium sized antelope, living in the savannahs of east africa
  • The Springbock, a small to medium sized antelope that lives in the desserts and savannahs of south west africa
  • And lastly the Thompsons Gazelle, a small to medium sized antelope that lives in the central area of east africa

What can we gather from this list?
We have:
  • no true small antelopes like duikers or dik-diks, eventhough dik-diks were reportedly seen in a tester version along side american aligators before the game released
  • no true large antelopes like the greater kudu or the common eland
  • no antelopes from northern africa or the sahel, examples include the greater kudu, dama gazelle, scimitar horned onyx, the arabian onxy, addax or the hartebeest, just to name a few.

And i just think thats really weird. I like all of the included species of antelopes, but why are we completly missing these nobrainer picks, like the common eland, greater kudu or a species of duiker or dik-dik, as all of them are more widespread and more distinct from the rest.
They would make the most sense for dlc animals from all the antelopes, as both big and small are easy to understand reasons to want the animals, especally the common eland stands out as a very common and iconic antelope, that has its niche in game right there left open, but isnt there.
The same goes for the northern species, as far as i know the addax and the scimitar horned onyx are the two most requested antelopes to still be added to the game, and probably more likely as they would fit well in a dessert or endangerd species pack.
But its just like, what about the rest? Both the large and small antelopes would be great to have and fitting animal for dlc, but what dlc? Aslong as we are not getting dlc about destinct regions in africa, for example a west africa or central africa pack, i dont really see were they could be included, which ngl makes me kinda sad.
At the same time i do really like all of the antelopes they included in the game already, even if choices like the nyala over the kudu or the inclusion of both the springbock and the thompsons gazelle are weird, i still do really like the animals.
So what do you think?
I just wanted to share my thoughts, as this has been brewing in my head for quite a while already and i just wanted to let it out and hear if im the only one crazy enough here to put so much thought into frontiers selection of african antelopes and how it kind of really doesnt make sense and kind of makes sense at the same time?
Its just confusing

To be honest, I am not a big fan of the antelopes/gazelle species since they all basically do the same and are kind of boring for me, but I understand the want for them. A few more species would be awesome to have, I would love an addax.

Thought I am pretty sure the animals that were reported to be in the game by the magazine were just mistaken for different species. Alligator for the crocodile, baboon for the macaque and the dik-dik for the springbok. It might sound weird becuase we are kind of known of animals around here, but trust me, a casual usually dont know nor care about those differences.

I think the addax is the most likely to be added either in an endangered species DLC or in a desert DLC. Their horns are different to the other antelopes and their X mark on the face makes them easily recognisable.

The bontebok is another antelope I'd like to have, but I think this one won't make it to the game unfortunately.

I'd love more antelopes too. They are so diverse!

  • Giant antelopes: Greater kudu, Giant eland
  • Miniature antelopes: Duikers, Dikdiks, Klipspringers
  • Indian antelopes: Nilgais, Blackbucks
  • Eurasian antelopes: Saiga, Tibetan antelope
  • European goat antelope: Chamois
  • Rare desert antelopes: Addax, Scimitar-horned oryx (even though grazing antelopes are in game already represented by Gemsboks and Sable antelopes)
  • Marsh antelopes: Waterbucks, Lechwes, Reedbucks,

And then there are all the other additional African antelopes like Bonteboks, Gerenuks, Hartebeests, Impalas, Tsessebes, Steenboks, etcetera.

Honestly, why i love my ungulates i can totally get that point. When im looking at what we have totally unbiased, the only three were im not secound guessing to include something else in favour of more uniqueness are the wildebeest, sable antelope and the bongo.
I dont think theres much wrong with any species they choose in a vacuum, just the overall selection feels weird.
If we would have gotten the three mentiond above, aswell as lets say the scimitar horned onyx instead of the gemsbock, the greater kudu instead of the nyala, red or blue duiker instead of either the springbock or thompsons gazelle the raster would have been much more well rounded instead of the southafrican focused mess it is right now.

At the same time what we have right now does not necessarly feel bad, just incomplete. Even just the addition of the addax or scimitar horned onyx aswell as the greater eland would already make the raster feel way more complete and with less weird exclusions.

Antelope are one of my favourite animals at the zoo. Every time I go to my local the addax are one of the species I look forward to seeing the most, so it's a huge +1 for me to see more antelope added. Not to mention that antelope (alongside monkeys) are one of the largest mammal groups represented in zoos. I get that a lot of people don't find them particularly exciting but I'd hope that their diversity really speaks for itself.

I doubt it was a mistake. Mistakes would happen the other way around, it is very unlikely to mistake a common animal for a niche animal (dik dik -> gazelle). The alligator might be, but still unlikely IMO.

Considering the alligator sign, I'd say they were scrapped relatively close to release.

Or even better: saved for a future DLC/Update.

But on subject, my favorite one, the bongo, is in the game, as is the sable antelope, which I also love.
So, the only 2 that I want (partly ZT2 nostalgia, but also because they are nice) are the addax and the scimitar horned oryx.

Maybe the dik-dik, since it's so different, but in general I'm happy with the antelope variety

My personal favourite antelope, the Nyala, is already in the game, so I'm satisfied with that. However, there are still a fair few species I'd like to see. This includes more standard zoo antelopes such as Addax, Scimitar-horned Oryx, Common Eland and Blackbuck (my most wanted) as well as some weirder options like Gerenuk, Klipspringer and Red Lechwe.

I'd like the addax, scimitar and arabian oryx because we have almost no true desert animals in the game
