Steam, Elite and Xbox Controller

I have been trying for days to get this combo to work and nothing I do is working. Controller works fine in windows and in Steam but when I get into Elite, nothing. It doesn't matter what option I use in Elite. In Steam, I have Xbox controller selected. If I remove the generic controller, then I get nothing in Elite. If I have Xbox and generic controller selected, I get nothing working in Elite. If I only have generic selected in Steam, the controller works but is not setup like it is on Xbox. There is no controller option for default or classic unless I have the Xbox controller option selected in Steam but then again, the controller does not function at all. I have tried other Steam games using the xbox controller option and they all work. Only Elite is not. Is Frontier aware of this or Steam or whom ever needs to know about this? Its frustrating because the Xbox version does not have the Odyssey update nd maybe never will so I wanted to try this on the PC but can't get the controller to work. Just about to say screw it and just stop playing it all together.

i play using a wired x box controller just fine?
using my own bindings(custom) other than those when using the (default context) set (which are a close match to xbox console but not identical)
sorry i don't use the steam version but from what i am aware most steam problems arise from the settings(modes) that are found in steam big picture mode controller settings
the general rule with this elite pc software is
if windows recognises a usb input device ie hotas or gamepad or keyboard or mouse or headtracking unit or even a HMD
then the game will too
if my grandmothers umbrella(cobra head) had a wired usb lead (which i would bind to the pitch an roll axis obviously) i am sure elite could utilise it
the same rule does not apply for Bluetooth input devices however

Hmm, I have been connecting the controller by Bluetooth because the computer is not next to me. Wonder if that could be part of the problem? I'll try connecting with a cable and see if that makes any difference. Thanks.

I went through the same issue. I ended up buying a "Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10"* - now by using that Elite sees the controller as a controller. Right pain in the posterior, other games (e.g. Forza) had no issues - just Elite thought it was a joystick combo. (You can assign controls directly, the game sees every axis and button - it just doesn't realise it is a controller.)

I have the wireless adapter for one of my older controllers that I tried. Still no go.

yep I would hazard a guess an say that's your problem......
I actually tried this a little bit ago. I didn’t have a ton of time to try different options but initially it was a no go. When I get home, I will have more time to try different things with the controller attached by cable.

In-game your Xbox controller and or generic controller will be displayed (listed) as 'control pad' and 'control pad with yaw'. Elite does not use Xbox terminology. Take care and Elite!

That's really frustrating. I use a Razer Wolverine xbox-style controller without issue. This is a wired controller (it's USB). In the past I have used a no-name wireless xbox-style controller (it had a USB receiver that plugged into the computer's USB port). Quality issues aside, that worked as well. I've been considering a wireless controller for when I want to play on my laptop, but two things give me pause...
these issues keep showing up;
the Razer is excellent.

I can only assume you're using the same (original/initial) usb port when you first launched Elite and does 'Windows' list the Xbox Controller as a 'Connected Device' in 'Windows Settings' 'Devices'? Can you change keybinds in-game? Previously I've had to re-input the same button configuration listed in-game for the controller to work. I can understand the frustrations, I've experienced so many issues in the past but thankfully the Xbox Wireless Controller Adapter has pretty much alleviated my issues and some. Rewasd is also highly recommended.

The "for Windows 10" and the "... With the new and improved Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows 10, you can play your favourite PC games using any Xbox Wireless Controller. " might mean it is a different beast from an older one?

BTW - if I connected via USB then Elite saw the controller no problem - do you find the same?

@Dragbug Perhaps worth a shot to try: Gamepad wired (or BT) and on > Steam > Library > right click > properties > Controller > set as image below;

...and then it forces you to restart. Hopefully you might not yet have tried this methodology?

I've used steam with XB gamepad since inception. The gamepad must be connected before you launch the EDO launcher each and every time for some reason, and I too recommend setting in-game custom binds (even if it's just one button change in each set!) so you can name it and recognise if it ever borks. Using 'big picture mode' caused me binds issues every time I tried it as @STRONTIUM DOG already told you, so personally I never ever do.

Keep persevering, it'll hold you in good stead for actually playing EDO :ROFLMAO:

Well, I first started trying to play the game with the Xbox one controller in Bluetooth mode. So it was never hooked up to the USB until I tried this morning. I did not check what windows is showing for the controller when I have it plugged in by cable but in Bluetooth mode, it showed as an Xbox controller. I can’t change keybindings in game. It acts like the controller doesn’t exist. Now, when I remove the Xbox from the steam settings and only have generic controller, the Xbox controller functions but binding values are keyboard or generic joystick. They do not show as Xbox buttons so you can’t have the contextual menus show up when holding down any of the buttons.

Disabling steam input disables the controller all together. Maybe I am doing something wrong though because I have seen this on my searching for an answer a few times. You mentioned being forced to restart. Are you meaning the game, steam, computer or all of the above?

@Dragbug Steam. That was a fresh screenshot of exactly how it looks for me today, and I am in-game. If you click the underlined bit does it look similar to this?

Or post what you see? Did your steam forum post not help you out either?

I didn’t see anything underlined in your screenshot. That said, yes, mine looks exactly like that, although, I do not have the Xbox extended selected because I don’t use an elite controller. I have tried it selected though, and no change. The detected controller doesn’t show Xbox 360. Mine shows Xbox One. Edit: no, not really any progress on the Steam forums yet. Someone provided suggestions but I didn’t understand. I don’t think they have replied back yet to explain.

As your steam settings are identical to both my screenshots then that's now me totally out of ideas too, but good luck @Dragbug 🍀
Success finally! So, apparently the game doesn't like when the controller is connected by Bluetooth. Once I connected by cable, it worked. That said, I accidently pulled the controller to far and it disconnected the cable but the controller immediately switched to bluetooth and for what ever reason, kept working. It was to late last night for me to try and see if it would start the game with bluetooth only but at least I know the controller works one way or the other with the game. Thanks to everyone that helped.
