I don't think as well traditional Chinese food really has a direct sweet and sour like sauce either.
I make a version of it but its balsamic vinegar (or rice wine if you can get it), ketchup, honey/ sugar and home made Chinese five spice. For extra UK takeaway authenticity you can add chunks of pineapple
