Steam, Elite and Xbox Controller

Success finally! So, apparently the game doesn't like when the controller is connected by Bluetooth. Once I connected by cable, it worked. That said, I accidently pulled the controller to far and it disconnected the cable but the controller immediately switched to bluetooth and for what ever reason, kept working. It was to late last night for me to try and see if it would start the game with bluetooth only but at least I know the controller works one way or the other with the game. Thanks to everyone that helped.
That's great news. Even with my wired USB game controllers, I have noticed an annoyance: If the controller is plugged into the USB port upon startup of the PC, it will not be enumerated (recognized) by the system. This is stupid and I;m not sure why it's like that because other USB devices are always plugged in when the computer is turned ON, and they operate perfectly every time. Mouse, keyboard, back-up flash-drive, etc., come to mind.

Perhaps if you were to connect the controller (wirelessly) after the computer is ON... you see where I'm going? I lost track of everything you have tried, so maybe this isn't applicable.

My computer is always on so that wasn't the issue. Elite dangerous just refused to see the controller when connected initially by wireless. However, If the controller is connected by wire on game start, I have found that I can disconnect the cable and the controller reconnects by wireless and the game is happy. If the game crashes though and you relaunch without connecting the cable again, it won't see the controller. It's annoying but at least it works. That said, you can reconnect the cable until the game sees the controller and then disconnect the cable again. Go figure.

Yup; pretty odd...

I also use the wireless adapter for windows 10 because I had bluetooth issues just like you did. With the wireless adapter, even when I have the controller off when I start the game, I don't lose bindings or anything. Definitely a good investment and if you get a chance, it may be a good idea to pick one up. I don't use the special Steam button configuration at all by the way.

I have one, it wasn't working in my case so I gave up using it. That said though, I think one of the issues i was having was that I didn't restart steam and the game after making controller settings and that could be why it wasn't working. But, I am good now as long as i plug in first with the cable.

your wired controller is pad 1. BT is pad 2, elite uses pad 1. to get you BT working you have to force your pc to forget the wired. so it uses the BT pad as pad 1.
make sure pad is on before you launch.
once the BT pad is registered as pad 1. the wired pad will work as pad 2 or if pad 1 is not switched on, pad 2 will be pad 1.
hope this helps :)

If you play PC Games often, then do yourself a favour and buy an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. The 4 Rear Paddles are extremely handy.
In the Steam "Controller Configuration" for Elite Dangerous you can map the paddles to any common use Keybinds that you prefer, like ...

I have shared that Configuration to the Steam Community.
If you have reWASD installed, note that you must not have that running while using a Steam Controller Config.
Note: I have my XboxElite2 controller connected by Wi-Fi, not Bluetooth, and have never had any problem connecting in that fashion.

I'd really like added functions from an Xbox-style controller on PC but I was under the impression that the paddles on the rear of these controllers only replicate buttons already on the normal controller, not that they were new, additional ones. Am I mistaken?

Another question I'd have for this controller specifically which is difficult to determine from sales materials available has to do with the D-pad:
Is this made up of four distinct switches, or is is a membrane?

Elite does not use Xbox terminology

That's not true. My game controller configuration options appropriately show the natural "LS," "RT," and several other xbox/microsoft controller-specific terminology.

OP, I know you found your workaround in using the wired connection, but for what it's worth I was in the same boat. What was weirder is that I was able to play on flat screen just fine with a new XBox Core Controller, but the second I started loading into VR for the first time in ~10 months, the game was only loading a keyboard profile, didn't recognize the controller, and it took a couple hours of troubleshooting. I think what finally worked was the fact that I reconnected my bluetooth adapter (generic bluetooth adapter, I don't even have the microsoft-specific one) after the game loaded, and it finally recognized that a game controller was connected. Once it's connected though, it seemed to constantly default to the keyboard-only profile, which I didn't notice at first, so it drove me crazy thinking the game still was not picking up the controller, but rather you just have to go into the in-game controls menu to make sure you're choosing one of the "control pad" profiles.

The default control pad profile isn't the greatest, so just use it simply to verify connectivity, then go back to a config profile that works.

(1) Steam have updated their Xbox Elite Controller Driver to allow mapping buttons and paddles to any Keyboard key, or Keyboard key combo, or mouse button, the same as you can with reWASD (which I now no longer need).

(2) The D-Pad is 8 directional. You get 2 magnetic directional pads; 8-way and 4-way. Substitute as required.
