Complete beginner needs helping guide

I am completely new to elite so have no idea how to get started.
I was advised by the introduction to go through the tutorials but am stuck at the very beginning.
I could not see anything on the screen to tell me what to do.
I checked the sound and did not get any narrative so suspect the guide is not vocal.
I have no idea what keys to press and although I have found the Esc key and read through the keyboard key controls.
I am a little familiar with flight simulators so did understand some of the terminology used but no wiser in what I should do in the tutorial.
I was hoping that the tutorial first steps would tell me exactly what I need to do, bit by bit, so I get used to the controls and what the effects are of them.
If I have missed something somehow please let me know.
Errm.. please be gentle.

Yeah. Starting is rough. I am going through it too. Here is what I have learned over a few hours of play:

1) Hit "esc" and click on "options" then on the keyboard controls. You can see the commands for everything in the game
2) Some REALLY important keys:
-"R": UP thrust (raise the ship)
-"F": DOWN thrust (lower the ship: critical for landings)
-"Q": Strafe left
-"E" strafe right
-"W": Accelerate
-"S": Deccelerate/fly in reverse
-Remap the landing gear key to the tilda/` key
3) Combat is dang difficult. Try the combat tutorials
4) When you land you have to FACE THE TOWER. Otherwise it won't work
5) Landing: look for the blue dot in the super small cross hair display to the left of your radar. That will show you where to fly to. Then get yourself over the pad. Make sure your landing gears are down! When you get low enough (fit "F" to lower") you should see a new display pop up with a crosshairs that shows you how to center your ship on the pad. CEntering will turn the display blue. Lower yourself with F. MAKE SURE YOU ARE FACING THE TOWER on your pad

The Beta is a Beta. So noobs like you and me aren't going to have much in game support. Gotta just experiment.

I have no idea how to make money beyond courier missions yet.

You forget A and D ..... rotate Ship. Important if you want to Dock in an Starport where the Bays are outside.... you always must Turn the ship so that you see in the Hologram you ships backside.
Every one start simple .... make Postman runs (deliver PAckages with no Cargo Space using) .... Check that you have an BAsic Sanner, and Scan Unexplored System, and Sell the Data ... In few Hours you will have enough money to upgrade your ship or buy an better one..
Back in 84 the difficult part was ... to dock in the Starport....;) ... and you only get Money by Bring Goods from Lave to the next "friendly" System...

The tutorials are currently lacking, another thing that needs an overhaul before gamma.

I don't know if money is issue but if not I would get a HOTAS or joystick at least as this will not only make piloting your craft easier but much more fun than a keyboard mouse set up. You can then map they controls to your own requirements.

Thank you for the replies so far.
I installed elite on my high spec laptop (Alienware M18X) as that is my current primary system but I have a high spec desktop (Alienware Aurora R4) which I have setup for flight simulator and high spec game stuff in my cabin in the garden. I will be installing elite on that on another day but wanted to get started on my laptop first.

I will work my way through the guide in the link supplied and see how I get on.

Thanks again.

For the tuts it tells you what to do in top right of screen BUT the writing doesn't stay there long and disappears even quicker if your mashing buttons so you need to remember what the objective is. Also you can restart the tut until you get the mechanics of it down.

One last bit of advice to add to vygers list: when trying to go into supercruise make sure your landing gear and fuel scoop is "retracted" or it wont work, ASLO if your "lasers" are out if wont work either as it counts as a "deployed hard point", you can hide them by hitting "u" on the KB. At least it was U in my control scheme.

Or you could try "Voice Attack" Lots of voice attack posts here- just use the search box top right to find them
Whichever you choose, use the tutorials to test any set ups thoroughly (the" shoot the biological waste drums" is a good one, as you can test everything including weapons) that way you won't get attacked.

GET HOTAS Stick

I'm also new to the game and totally agree with the previous post on getting a HOTAS stick ASAP. I started with a cheap Logitech Extreme 3D pro joystick. It really helped with docking and general navigation.

I wanted more buttons and a throttle so I just ordered a Saitek X52 Pro. Can't wait for it to arrive so that I cat give it a test run.

Good luck with the game!

Go to http://www.scribd.com/doc/236560722/Elite-Dangerous-pilots-guide-manual-tutorial and http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Elite_Dangerous_Wiki Both good user created sites for ED! Look on YouTube for many ED tutorials.

Welcome Commander!

Hopefully there will be good tutorials teaching new players the basics so everyone not visiting forums asking for help won't quit after 15 minutes of bewilderment never to return.

OK.. back again...
Managed to get through the tutorial on cleaning up the toxic waste canisters. Was very useful for getting hang of the minimal flight controls.
I am finding the time it takes to get from the selected menu option and the screen with a ship rotating on it to the next screen almost too long to put up with.
Is this long wait what every player gets or is it my setup? (running on Alienware M18X)
is there a 'get on with it' key I can press?
I also tried to go back to the docking tutorial but was not able to see any instructions being displayed anywhere. I was told its in the top right area but did not see anything I understand.
And even if I did and did some action what would I see happen next?
I also tried to start Solo and start Open Play but nothing seemed to happen after the rotating ship was displayed.
I am trying to be patient but its a bit of a slog so far.
Please help if you can.

You mention long waits.. Im only guessing, but your internet connection is dsl/adsl or something slow? There are some networking issues beta is going thru and people with slower systems or slower network may have connection issues where the system hangs, or times out,

One of the best set of free downloads I've written yet..
click link for free guides, downloads, and teamspeak servers.. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showth...hlight=dummies

Thanks for that response.
My internet is broadband via fibre so 30+MB/s so not expecting any local network problems.
I see the ship rotating and nothing indicating any activity. If there was a 'loading' message and perhaps some sort of progress bar I would at least know its not waiting for me to do something.

I am sorry to have to state that I have got no where with this game.
I am completely stumped.
When I select Open Play I get sometimes get no response, that is, nothing changes on the screen.
When I select Solo nothing happens.
At this time I cant do anything except the target practise in the tutorial.
I need to know what is supposed to happen when I select Open Play assuming that is what I am supposed to do.
Please help if you can.

Hi if you want to set-up some easy keys and get a step-by-step beginners guide you can try the link in my signature. Have fun

My previous attempt to reply disappeared.
I am completely stumped. the game is not working for me.
If I select Open Play I get no response. Waited for 5 minutes.
How long should I wait?

Hi, your internet connection is working?

Try to use solo play, this will reduce the amount of bugs encountered due to heavy network load on the servers. It will be perfect to take your first steps.

It may be that the server is currently unavailable. There are some other mentions of this on the forum.

This. Using a HOTAS or Joystick (I have the latter) will definitely make your life easier. Remembering all the controls is a little daunting at first but once you get used to it then you'll be having a ton of fun.

The community on these forums are also very helpful so if there are any parts of the gameplay you are not sure on then you are in the right place here.
