Newcomer / Intro Salvage mission flawed?

I picked up two salvage missions this morning for the same system. This system only has one small planet so I thought they'd be pretty close together. I found the first one, picked up a black box and immediately got pounced on by a bunch of rats. I got away ok, but now when I go back to the system the mission icon is attached to a star and I can't track down the salvage site.

How do I get close enough to a star to find a site? Should the mission point be at a star?

Thanks.

Just noticed I also have a mission icon in the Galaxy and System map that doesn't match any mission I currently have selected.

Will try a re-log....

No, no messages of re-direction. I've since accepted 4 more salvage missions, oddly 2 of them are in the same system and they're not popping either. One mission icon attached to a planet disappeared and I can't locate the other new one at all.

I might have to ticket this, I think something large and sludgy has blocked the pipework.

That does sound a bit strange, yes.

I have also noticed some sub-standard behaviour when I have more than one salvage mission in a system, but I was able to find the spot in the end.

One of them just randomly popped into life as I was trying to escape an interdiction nowhere near the planet in question. A but random.

One thing has become blatantly clear while trying to work out what's happening when you have several of the same mission open, is, there should be some kind of unique mission identifier!

Come to think of it I've never tried stacking these. I've taken on 2 at a time, but not to the same system. Maybe it's just bugged.

i have stacked those often for the same system. use your advanced discovery scanner or scan the nav beacon from real space to find the location. pointing to the star means "you are in the right system" in my experience.

I have also stacked in the same system with no problems. But they weren't salvage missions.
It's possible it needs you to return the one mission to fix the other.
Not that I'm saying its the requirement every time, just sometimes things like that can fix a bug.

Did you use the advanced discovery scanner (or scan the Navigation beacon) as using one will produce a blue 'Mission Updated' which will then show you exactly which celestial body you need to travel to for starting the mission proper. This tip is mentioned in one of the (i) info messages in the mission description before you accepted it.

If the mission icon is still at the the main star (in the galaxy map) it most likely means that the mission is somewhere in that system but you need to scan it.
If the mission icon is at another system it could mean you have completed one mission but to pick up your reward you need to travel to said system/station to receive your credits.

If you are mission stacking it is easy to lose track.

Mind if I resuscitate this rather than opening a new one.

Got a black box imperial navy salvage mission. Went to the target system, scanned and followed the hints, found the debris and the black box, scooped it up. Double checked I have it in inventory and it has the mission tag. Returned to the other system. But mission status did not get updated. No message, nothing in the mission board, I'm unable to complete it. Logging out and in did not change anything. The mission was not stacked with any other one. Searched various guides on this and out of ideas what to try, must be missing something. Thanks for any pointers.

What does it say in the mission details on your left-hand UI? That will show if you have all that is needed (maybe you needed 2 black boxes) since you didn't get a message in comms that "mission completed return to xxxx for reward" then I suspect you might need to have more than one retrieved.

This didn't occur to me at all. Mission details remain unchanged but it says explicitly "We need you to find the missing Black Box", i.e. one. Hence I left as soon as I had it. Could be I should have checked all pieces if there are more. However, considered irl background of what a black box is, this is counterintuitive.

Are such inconsistencies known to occur more often in the game? I've since moved on to other plans but will try again when I get back to it. Thank you for the hint.

It will say in the mission description how many are needed. Yes, the verbiage of the mission might read singular (eg. "rescue the black box"), but it's the actual object counter further down in the mission description that's important, and these missions usually need multiple items. Black box missions, in my experience, usually require four of them.

While not all of these black box salvage missions ask you to pick up 4 black boxes, missions to pick up just one are unusual in my experience.

I'd guess that you're supposed to pick up more than one. If the mission was rated as Elite, it's often four. Once you have begun the mission and completed it partially (as it appears you have), the mission rating doesn't show up in the description.

However, if you go to your left panel and select transactions and the mission, you should be able to scroll downward to the bottom of the description and see how many black boxes you have retrieved and how many you need expressed as a fraction (for example 1/4).
Good luck!

Alright, got it. DUH, LOL. This mission wants 2. Never noticed that you can actually scroll down that page, it looks complete at first glance and since the mouse doesn't work on it my brain must have filtered out the scrollbar. Well, I'm on the way to an expedition right now and won't be back for a while. The box I had I shat right back into the mailslot on the way out and told them to go pick it up themselves. Gonna let the fine sit there and watch if it festers and grows into something else like in a typical bureaucracy, haha.

Thanks, good luck o/
