independence wars 2 edge of chaos (ID2)

So after many hours in ED I found myself thinking of (ID2) So having the disk on a self marked pre-xp I went ahead and installed it and after many hours of configuring and adjusting I got it working.

Let me just say WOW I mean really this game did so many things right flight physics, pirating, combat and home base, after some hours playing I started seeing ED and ID2 mixing and giving birth to the most beautiful of space sims the likes of witch we may never see.

For all you new people please do yourself a favour and spend a little time playing ID2 and re-Kendall your idea factories.

Supercruise reminds me a lot of a high fidelity LDS, - in some ways Dangerous is the game I always wanted I War2 to be, -

Though I do prefer Edge of Chaos's flight model - But I understand why FD chose to go the route they did in Dangerous.

Loved how you stole cargo and that your cargo was an item/container it existed in the universe.

Also loved how shields worked and your command module :p

Definately agree on both. :)

I never played any of the prior Elite games, but the moment I heard that Elite would have something similar to LDS and capsule drive, I threw my money into Alpha backer level. :D

OMG YES !!!

Independence War II is the game I keep mentioning from the beginning. Devs should really take huge inspiration in that! As you say, real physics fighting, LDS drive for supercruising just perfect, homebase and everything, maybe the only game that got close to Elite Frontier in those 25 years.

I completely forgot about this game until I saw your thread. IW2 was ED basically (really close). In many ways better than ED alpha and parts of the beta. Still in some ways better. There was always a lot going on in it and you didn't have to look hard to find stuff to kill or do. But in ED they STILL need to add more content. But ED is getting there. WOW IW2 brings back a few memories. I remember at that time thinking it was a new Elite game. It is amazing how much ED is like ID2. Even the ships look similar. I remember one bug in it that bugged me all the time. The space dust always went through the cockpit lol. Funny that's how I remember this game "the game that had the space dust flying through the cockpit" LOL.

Greetings all,

Yes, I also have that 'in it's monster disk plastic box' (for the time), There was quite an uproar when it first came out as no one had 'at that point' truly modeled space dynamics.
- It proved to be a rather difficult game to master, all other games still used 'fluid' or 'air' type steering for any space based game.
- It offered the player movement closer to how it should be and showed all the other game designers how it should be made.
- It was the start of space flight where you really needed to think ahead of what and where you wanted to be or go.
- This changed what could be done, but sadly it was 'before it's time', and never really took off.
- Now we are seeing all the space based Sims's and games adapt truer dynamics for what should be correctly modeled movement.
At the time of it's release personnel computers were just starting to offer the user options for higher end computing, up until then it was a niche market and only or normally only ventured into by the 'nerds' of the day. Still very costly for the top end systems and somewhat limited in what could be created. It's hard to judge what end of the gamming industry fueled the push for better, faster, home user systems. At that point it was one of the few games that required the user to have a system that was minimum, mid end to high end, just to play it. (unheard of at the time, as everyone else dumbed down there games for the absolute lowest end user.)

Good to see it still works, kind of of retro now. And we are about to see 64bit, double precision gaming arrive within the next few months, this should change everything. Graphics card designers as well as game creators will need to 'get on the ball' if they want to stay viable, as this change opens the area of active play in any created game sphere.
- We have been limited to less that 10km from the spawn point before corruption of location points happens. (32bit, persistence universe)
- That changes to 100's of Km with double precision and 64bit.

Just some info, good show getting it to run.

I have it on my computer running Win-7. You can get it at GOG. I think that's where I got mine. ... I may crank it up just for fun. Evochron is still on my 'puter too. I still start it up and play sometimes ... its the space sim i burned out on before E : D.
.
I also got the Freespace games from there too. Oldies but goodies. ... its amazing what they could do way back then ... same for flight sims. ... good day

Loved Edge of Chaos, great arcade Newtonian and game; preferred Independence War for awesome dreadnaught simulation with separate crew stations and military context. Also, that intro video

Thinking back you know the story was epic also, and the connection to your character/avatar was intense from start to finish.

Always wanted this game to be an mmo type game and I think at this time I was playing my first mmo (neocron)

I remember EOC has a mod for it which is called Thorn stars.
Basically, it transforms EOC in a more Elite version of it with trading etc...
Hopefully it is somewhere on one of my hard disks, but don't remember where lol.
My rig is a little messy by now as it contains more than 10-20 years of accumulated software...
I really need to make some cleaning someday...

Edit : hooray i found it !!!!

Feel free to try it and its addition unstable space : http://www.moddb.com/mods/torn-stars/downloads

I think i will reinstall this game now !

Always nice to see I-War get its dues.

I got them off GOG and revisited them prior to buying into the ED Alpha here. Despite some pains in getting them to run nice on Windows 7 and play well with a HOTAS (pretty much gave up on the original playing nicely with all these axis and went with keyboard only) they're still great if a little rough in some places. Sadly I ran into a bug fairly late game in Edge of Chaos that prevents any further progress but even then still worth the pitiful amount of money asked for imo a landmark title in the genre.

Along with Warhead I-War and Edge of Chaos probably constitute my favourite three space combat games of all time. Glyn Williams (and later with others at Particle Systems) had some chops for making great core mechanics to fit a newtonian flight model.

As happy as I am to see Elite here and growing in the future and Citizen on the horizon it still makes me sad to think that it's unlikely we'll see the same type of title as I-War going forward. Maybe some indies (hah) will take a good shot at it some day.

I truly love this game :) Why don't they make masterpieces like that anymore? All we get are WW2 flight sims in a so called ˝space˝ :(
