Guide / Tutorial Odyssey Biological and Geological Guide

I have only empirical data to go on, but it seems osseus is not so keen on equatorial regions. I had a cow of a time finding any on a certain body below about 20 degrees (either way), and when I did, it was a solitary specimen. Got out to about 40N, found a cluster within minutes.

I've been driving around this planet for almost an hour now. Scanner says there are 6 Biologicals.
I've found all 6. The problem is I have this PRIMITIVE Sampler that's only capable of sampling 1 type at a time. And need to find 3 different types of the same Bio.
Since I sampled the 1st type, I've discovered all the others, but it does me no good because I have this PRIMITIVE Sampler that's incapable of doing more than 1 type at a time. I've not seen any of the 1st type I found. 2 colonies and both the same.

There's a Simple Fix to this.
1: There's already an animation to remove and replace Sample Canisters. Allow us to carry like 5 or 6 of them so we don't have to bypass new finds while continuing a seemingly fruitless search for "Like but Different" type previously sampled.
2: Make the Canister capable of holding multiple type of samples, like 6. Again, this would prevent having to bypass new finds while looking for the original!

As it is, I'm about to say Screw this. I'm not really interested in spending hours on the surface, unless it's productive time!
Imagine if this was REALITY & you were out exploring. Would YOU want to be saddled with such a Primitive Sampling Device?
I will give them Kudo's on dropping the "Sampling Game" they were originally going with!

Recalling my ship. I'm about 1/2 way between Sag A+ & Beagle Point.

I ditch the stubborn sample and collect the rest and only go back for the other once I know I can get a good sample.

For immersion it has to be this way. No Commander would ever have the foresight or wisdom to just buy 40 or 50 bio canisters to make his life easier, it's just not feasible.

Frankly a small ship specialized (or an equivalent Adder) for Exobiology with optimized speed, jump range, and ease of finding a landing spot (THE most challenging part of this 'gameplay') is your smartest play here.
I have to disagree with this: the smartest play here is to not worry about the time. Your advice would be the second smartest :)

Seriously, if you're only running around doing "scan, bam, thank you ma'am", you're missing out on the potential for mini-adventures (or not so mini), like landing atop a 6km mountain to get those fungoids, straying too far from your ship so it scuttles off, sliding down the backside of a peak you were trying to climb so you can't get back to the area you landed (so you can recall your ship) and having to make your way down that 6km mountain until you can find somewhere flat enough for your ship to land. That was rather fun, and a bit nail-biting, but I wasn't too worried: I still had spare cells, but... (it was more, "can I get somewhere without using a cell?").

Nah, if we're going to play THAT game then the smartest play would be to uninstall the game, or to not do Exobiology at all...

I see nothing entertaining in your little 'adventure' example. You do know you can summon your ship anyways and it'll give you a blue teleport circle while hovering 50m in the air that you can still use to board with right? Regardless, even assuming someone would find this sort of thing appealing if you look at the previous warning in my post you'd realize you'd be doing this like 100 times and for what? Glorified Adventures in Buffoonery because you can't think of anything more entertaining, or productive to do with your time? At some point, probably around the 30th iteration of 'aw shucks I missed a jump and now need to spend 10 minutes climbing a mountain' you'll get sick and tired of it. Good news, only 70 more times to go though!

Your argument essentially boils down to "I'm so desperate for something to do I will intentionally do this pointless exercise the hard way in the hopes I F up and have to unnecessarily waste more time for no real reason". If that's your situation then have at it. Walk around pointlessly to your hearts content. Keep in mind you could instead be:
  • Actually going for a hike somewhere real and interesting in your area,
  • Painting your parent's fence,
  • Learning or honing a skill IRL (I suggest critical thinking and self evaluation),
  • Spending quality time with a loved one,
  • Reading an Elite novel,
  • Writing an advice post for how not to waste your time on pointless make work tasks in a supposedly entertaining product,
  • Watching the paint dry on your parent's fence...

The list of interesting or more productive things to do than 'push forward on your keyboard more' is endless! Give it a try!

I have to agree with that one. I'm heading to Sag A* and I'm a handful of jumps away with over 30mcr in Samples, 200mcr in cart data, 15mcr in vouchers and I see this:

Over 8km high at least and I'm like there's no way... No. Absolutely not. Nada. It's not happ...

One hour later...

To see the curvature of this moon from up here was worth it! Er, can I get a mountain rescue please?

See? And that is fun. They are doing it because they have fun—it‘s not for the money or the rank. It‘s just fun. But our fun is not necessarily your fun and vice versa.

And see? I already stated that they can continue to do so, but, no game dev or general advice should cater to the lowest common denominators.

I agree. It is possible to derive fun from this activity. However, I also agree with Burstar1. Exobiology is a pretty lame activity to attach a rank to. There are tools available to Traders and Explorers to help them attain Elite rank but Exobiology needs no such tools, just a list. Not so much a Road to Riches though, Exobiologists get paid less than any other trade in the game. Weird decisions were made (having to collect 3 samples of one species before being allowed to scan for others and the heat map debacle to name two) and it's such a time-consuming one-dimensional activity for low rewards and some risk (low but some). I think Exobiology needs some more thought put into it and some Dev love to make it anything but the red-haired stepchild of Odyssey.

Exobiology need danger. They did it for Geology - you can burn to death or be thrown 15km into the sky...

What we need is... "Oh my God, it's got me!"

Or this shorting out your systems...
GLEcxUK.png

So that you have to run back to your ship or SRV with the face plate freezing up with every breath - 10 seconds to live...

Or your ship falling apart because you rolled over a bacteria patch with your SRV and then boarded it without disinfecting it first...

Adding danger to an activity that already has the lowest rewards of any rank in the game is the last thing it needs. I get paid the same for 20 mins in an on-foot CZ that I do for an entire day of Exobiology and CZs have no risk either. What it needs is more depth and better rewards. It's beyond me how to achieve that though but we could start with some QOL by removing the need to collect 3 samples, or at least allow us to scan things as we find them and get paid when we have 3 samples of anything just to make it less time-consuming. They were going to release it with a mini-game attached to scan things, thank the gods that never came to pass or it would have made a tedious time-consuming exercise a tediously annoying time-consuming exercise.
