What to do with the Keelback (explorer?)

This is one ship I have never really had a use for, but now with Odyssey I have started scouting a few planets just to see if update 6 is shaping up, and maybe there is a use for a smallish ship that can land almost anywhere but can also carry a fighter to scout the surface and also two SRVs. Jump range? Above 40ly, sufficient??
I can’t think of a better use atm, but I would love to hear yours!

While not playing Odyssey (Console) I find that the Keelback is a nice little mining ship, especially for core mining.

It fits all tools (abrasion, lance, subsurface, displacement) exactly, the utilitiy slots match also (pulse wave, heat sink, point defence/ECM)
and the optional slots takes exactly two size 5 cargo, a 4 shield, a 3b collector, one size 2 refinery, a1 prospector and the DSS. No space wasted.
Only needs a bit enhancing the power plant (or stay with a class B pulse wave).
 
Looks fit for use. I would adjust the internals a bit. I think 30-40Ly is enough for EDO stuff. For sure if you fit a (big) scoop to cover longer distances.

That ship runs fairly hot and I was expecting to cover maybe 2-3000ly so I would like a big fuel scoop if poss. Thanks for the input!
 
Yeah, RES or nav beacon. Wouldn't consider it for CZ considering the insane HP of ships in them. I only take the big guns into CZ these days, otherwise you end up spending way too long clearing them out, and can even end up losing because you just can't kill quick enough. Shame that, used to love doing CZ in small ships.
Agreed, although I did meet someone at a CG a while back who said they could win a low CZ in a sidey, albeit in half an hour. I think they were using LR plasma rails and enhanced thrusters. Not sure how I would attempt it in a keelback lol.

That’s a good use case, I agree. The only downside is speed I guess.

You could drop a vehicle hanger in exchange for a AFMU. Also if it’s just exploration do you really need any weapons or the shield boosters? You should get another 2ly without them
