Small note regarding NMS: The game will never max out CPU if your CPU has more than 8 threads. It's a PS4/PS5 port side effect.

One of the praises I used to give Elite (Horizons) is that it ran so well considering the graphics quality it provides. One of the reasons it's (Horizons) is my favorite VR game is because I can actually run it in VR with mostly ultra settings and a bit of supersampling, making it a very nice-looking and immersive VR game. I can also play it on my 4K TV at 60 fps, something most other games can't quite do on my 1660ti.

This is why I really do dread the day when Odyssey code is merged back into Horizons, making Horizons "Odyssey Lite". At that point, Elite will no longer be playable for me, regardless whether I buy Odyssey or not. I just hope that day doesn't come for at least another year so I can have one last "hurrah!" this winter in Horizons.

Interesting Drew, that you find Odyssey temps are higher than No Man's Sky.

My laptop is i7 with RTX 2060 graphics card. I note that Odyssey runs cooler on the laptop, probably 10-15 C cooler than Space Engineer's & No Man's Sky.
I tried out the Dysterra beta a couple of months back & that ran very hot into the 90's on both......so I doubt I'll be buying that when it's released.

Snarky unhelpful comments aside...

1080p.
Default settings as profiled by the games themselves during installation.
Hardware as per the chart (GTX 1070 and i7800) - not overclocked, but worth mentioning also installed on SATA SSD.
Latest NVidia drivers.

EDO Clean install, %localappdata% deleted and keybinds restored
EDO decided itself that "Ultra" was appropriate. We moved it down in stages to 720p on medium with no shadows or bloom and still had similar FPS and yes, we relogged each time.

Average results in "busy" areas shown in the chart.

World of Warships - PvP battle
No Man's Sky - Multiplayer settlement
FS 2020 - Major airport (Heathrow) with AI planes.
EDH - Planet surface at starport
EDO - On foot around settlement.

Cheers,

Drew.

Mr. Wagar, I saw your stream, you are right, not much of an improvement :(
My Pc is very high end and conflict zones stuttering is making them unplayable. Even in populated settlements, noticeable drops. Especially when AI is using resources to do something. Like alarms or anything that coordinates them.
It's server side. Servers need a real upgrade. Or add more of them.
I am sad. Very sad. Drew Wagar is one of Elite's souls.
Elite is loosing souls. This saddens me a lot.

That will be the day :D
No, my guess is that they offloaded their servers on our PC's. So most of the AI is done locally which is stupid if they did this.

Yes, I guess all AI calculations are done locally. I may be wrong tho.
But I don't think it's fair to call that "stupid". There's not a lot of other options when there's no dedicated server.

Singleplayer games have to do the AI calculations locally as well.

Singleplayer games do not pull stats from servers and returns to server to compare and so on. A singleplayer game does everything locally.
That's why single player games are better.
Multiplayer games need everything balanced and any network problem from client or server = lag. Or stutter.
I wonder how AI was done in Horizons. Never had any stuttering even with dozens of ships fighting in installation defenses. Conflict zones do not spawn that many ships as installation defenses do.

I'm no expert, but I imagine AI is the same as it was in Horizons.

As far as I am aware, in most p2p games where there is AI, either one person or multiple will own (as in control) some of the AI locally and those will be synced up with other players in that same instance. I'm pretty sure this is what ED does, which also explains some of the issues surrounding AI such as when they all sit frozen in a station docking area / mailslot and is likely related to player instance changes.

Basically, I think looking at AI is barking up the wrong tree.

Downloaded update#7
(it's been a while - well basically since update #6 dropped the last time I logged in)

Must of logged outside a main station last time, so I gave it a minute to render everything as Frames were bouncing all over the place 60-110. When the frames settled down somewhat, requested docking.

Began approach to mailbox, massive hitching, frame stuttering.
drops inside station (in ship) 30-90 fps

Disembarked because "hey, concourse should be better now..."
nope, 50-90 fps depending on orientation.

Big drops in frames when looking through glass windows etc still. So the patch note about improving this is a porky pie... unless their definition of an improvement is a 0.1% low

Here's waiting for update # 8
back to SC again

It's guess AI has to be local, but if two people are in the same instance then that AI has info has to be sent to everyone else in the instance, so then your local game is not only having to calculate all the AI but also act as a server to everyone else.

For me update 7 is just as bad all the previous updates and the Alpha. I can play Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p and get 45-50FPS pretty much all the time, I play Odyssey at 1080p and go to a settlement, even if I can't see any NPC's, I'm only getting 20-22FPS.

I think it's unacceptable for a full price expansion to still have it's new content unplayable after 4 months and 7 updates.
