PC Stats for discussion. EDO vs other games on my PC.

I'll only have chance to try out update 7 when I get home, but I find with NMS, I get a similar stuttering of FPS, at equally odd times, like I do in EDO-update 6 in ground conflicts. It'll be ok for a bit in NMS, but then drop to only a few FPS.
I get 60 FPS in Horizons always, and get 60 FPS when in space, only, in Odyssey. If I land, on a station or planet, that reduces quite a bit.

How on Earth can it be running worse than MSFS 2020? That just beggars belief!
It does for me as well. Single digit FPS on Odyssey now for most of the settlements right after landing, but climbs up to 25 or so afterwards. MSFS on the other hand runs with around 45 FPS. Both on 1080p with high settings (although you probably can't directly compare settings categories there). MSFS seems to run better in VR as well, I usually can limit ASW to 30 with just some cloud settings reduced from the pancake ones.

Odyssey performance still is pathetic IMHO. How they plan to get that shoved into old-gen consoles is beyond my imagination. I guess they internally dropped that plan already, anyway, and the schism will be with ED until its very end.

Interestingly enough I also have one of the 10 series cards of NVIDIA: GTX 1080. The CPU is a Kaby Lake, though: i7-7700K. Perhaps that combo makes the difference.

With a bit of help from watchers of my vid I've made a few tweaks to my PC which have improved things a little.

I use the fps cap in Nvidia control panel (set at 60 fps - refresh rate of my monitor) and derestricted the games, this seems to have helped them utilise the GPU more efficiently.

Results (same 1080p, games on their "high" settings, latest nvidia drivers, reboot and /options/gfx deleted in EDO to allow it to rebuild)

World of Warships - doesn't cause my GPU to break a sweat (older game I guess)

No Man's Sky - Managed 60 FPS before utilising the GPU to 100%. High CPU usage though.

MS FS 2020 - Hits 100% of GPU, but achieves 57 FPS (flying over Cairo here)

EDO - Also now hits 100% GPU (Good I guess), but only managed mid to high 20s FPS around settlements.

I don't have screenshots, but I have game stats.

NMS: capped at 60fps 1080p, all Settings at Max except shadows and volumetrics which are High.
Never drops below 60; CPU usage is between 60% and 80%, GPU usage anywhere between 60% and 90%.

Destiny 2: capped at 75fps, completely maxed settings at 1080p.
Never drops below 75; CPU total usage is between 30% and 70%. GPU usage between 45% and 80%.

Death Stranding: capped at 60fps. completely maxed settings at 1080p.
Never drops below 60fps, CPU total usage between 60% to 85%. GPU usage between 45% to 80%

EDO: capped at 30fps, everything maxed except for shadows which are Medium, and using FSR Quality to upscale to 1080p.
Sometimes drops to 25fps, CPU usage anywhere between 30% and 95%, GPU usage anywhere from 45% to 99%

So the issue is not my hardware, it's just EDO runs like a paraplegic armadillo.

And what is the point if this thread? Are you trying to get people to play another game because it uses less gpu cpu power?

This is why I really do dread the day when Odyssey code is merged back into Horizons, making Horizons "Odyssey Lite". At that point, Elite will no longer be playable for me, regardless whether I buy Odyssey or not. I just hope that day doesn't come for at least another year so I can have one last "hurrah!" this winter in Horizons.

Same here. Though it is really starting to look like they won't be able to pull off the merge without absolutely nuking the remnants of their playerbase, so I have hopes it won't happen. Then again, this is FD. They would nuke the remnants of the playerbase.

Cheers,

Ouch. That's not a good look, but it matches my experience - I play all but one of those games and get similar relative performance as yours in each.

In fact I had a complete freeze on EDO when disembarking at a settlement tonight, followed by a lot of stuttering and single digit frames per second. It's the first time that's happened to me since the Alpha.

@drew Sorry to see you are not having a good experience on EDO. It does look like the GPU is the choke point but its hard to understand why EDO would be more demanding than MSFS.

I think update 7 was a step backwards in terms of performance and this was partially remedied with 7.1. Update 7 has got the game looking freaking awesome though so when it works it looks pesch.

I'll give update 8 a whirl when it's out. Hopefully the FPS is better. Can't do much more at the moment. Regardless of settings FPS in the 20s around settlements is all I can get right now and I can't play it like that (not counting the hesitations and stutters on top of this). :(

Cheers,

Drew.

Which I find interesting, because my 2060 is around the same level as a 1070, in theory. I get at least 30. Not that its playable, but still. But hey, there's patches 9-12 to look forward for. Just not for me.

I would be content with Horizons even if they did a code freeze and told people, "All future updates and bug fixes will be Odyssey-only." My pappy still happily runs Windows XP, after all ;)

As I understand it, there is just one BGS for both Horizons and Odyssey right now, but Horizons only accesses a subset of that BGS. If this is the case, then it's not like Frontier would need to maintain two different server architectures. Probably the biggest negative of leaving Horizons as-is would be the continued divide of the player base (instancing). Me personally, I don't care about that. I just want my best VR game to continue to work as-is on my PC.

It's amazing that we're even having this conversation. That a DLC would be so bad that we don't want any of it (even for free) is kinda mind-boggling.
