Ships Dolphin or Type6?

So after years of playing on Xbox, I’ve started over on PS4. I have a cobra3, and I can’t decide if I should step up to a Type 6 or a Dolphin? Looking at Edsy… They seem to have similar specs with the Type6 having a little more cargo, a little better jump range, and a little cheaper. Dolphin has a little better shields maybe. I can’t see what’s better about the Dolphin, does it handle better? Run cooler? Maneuver better in supercruise or what? I never see luxury passenger missions offered, so that doesn’t seem a reason to choose it.

Btw, it’s just for all around missions, probably cargo and courier, exploration, maybe some srv stuff, or try mining a bit. Neither is good for combat with only 2 small guns.

Ok so I went with… neither 😂
Instead I bought a Diamondback Explorer. I figure pre-engineering it’ll be better for exploring and trekking around the bubble unlocking engineers. And I had a good time bounty hunting (profitable now days!), so I was able to buy and A rate it. Im excited, I never used it in all my years playing on Xbox.

Now what’s this about Keelbak? What’s special about it besides can carry a SLF bay?

You should have tried out both, as they are a joy to fly.

Oh ya I’ve flown the Dolphin a little bit before. It’s big cousin the Orca I took to Distant Worlds 2. I’ve never flown the type 6 though. I just decided I enjoy bounty hunting and so the Diamondback X should be good for my uses right now - traveling around, some exploration, and bounty hunting. But we’ll see, if I don’t like it, I’ll probably go get a Dolphin.

The way I consider DBX vs Dolphin is, the DBX takes a class 5 FSD. Go gather the materials and get the Engineered FSD V1 which is only available as a class 5 module. If you then want to move on from the DBX, most other medium ships that are not exclusively for combat (e.g. ASP X, Krait II/Phantom, Python, Alliance Chieftain (OK it's combat but takes a class 5 FSD)) you can transfer it from the DBX into these other ships. When you decide that engineered FSD is in a ship you never want to move it from, find Felicity Farseer or one of the other engineers in the bubble who work on FSDs and get the mass manager effect added which will give you another 1 to 2 ly jump range.
You can't do that starting with a Dolphin as it uses a class 4 FSD.
Dolphin is a fun ship for playing around at passenger missions and has more cargo space if you want to try out a spot of laser mining or even trading. It will also fuel scoop faster than a DBX (class 5 instead of class 4 fuel scoop can be fitted), but it will never match the DBX for jump range or combat ability. DBX also runs cool, so has no trouble fuel scooping which is just as well when it takes longer to scoop.

Yup, the pre-engineered FSD is class 5 and is the way to avoid a lot of boring grind.

But, piloting a Dolphin with their luxury cabins, you feel like the preferred pilot for the rich and famous. 😎

A DBX is a ship that you'll be using right through the game. All the others are stepping stones. You can earn money so quickly now that you can have a ship optimised for every task.

Early in the game, if you want to go and shoot pirates, it has to be the Vulture, so park up your DBX for now, get your Vulture and go and have some fun while making loads of money.

The T6 is a good ship for starting Robigo sightseeing missions and mining until you have enough money to get a Python, which is a very good miner and passenger ship for the Robigo missions.

These three ships (Vulture, DBX and Python} will take you all the way to your first billions and all the engineer unlocks. Every ship has its own speciaities, but these three will beat any of their rivals for all the normal things you do in the game while you work up to your Cutter and Corvette, then all your specialist ships.

To summarise, the Python and DBX will be useful right through the game. The T6 is a stepping stone for making money. The Vulture is the best unengineered fighting ship, eventually to be replaced by whatever engineered fighting ship that takes your fancy, though it's still a lot of fun to use late in the game when engineered.

I have a Dolphin that I use for rares running/smuggling. Fully laden with 64 tonnes of cargo she can jump 33.5Ly and go 193Ly before needing to scoop.

And, like any proper smuggler, she has sharp eyes and even sharper teeth. Long range sensors can resolve targets at 8km and twin long range rail guns can engage with 100% damage at 6km.

But it's a passenger ship 😅
I love this imaginative use of a Dolphin 👍

Hah coincidentally I was just designing a dolphin smuggler in edsy last night, runs so cool seems perfect for it.

Great fun, but if you're a pragmatist, a Python beats in in all respects for that.

Maybe the Python is the ship to work towards when earning the substantial amount of extra credits need to buy it while in the Type 6 or Dolphin. And the Dolphin easily out runs the Python if a quick escape is needed, as does the cheaper Krait II and the cheaper Imperial Clipper that also has the same cargo capacity as the Python - all be it on a large landing pad.
