Development Update 4 - September

.............as a German I may be a little worried about the salute emote... just saying.
I presume you refer to the straight arm salute that came about in 1930's Germany, in public and paramilitary 'circles' offering acknowledgement and overt support of one man. Conversely the ''stiff hand to forehead and down'' salute is a military 'greeting' from time in memorial, worldwide..... and WAS also used by German military during WW2 when they felt antipathy to the salute you worry about.... there is no confusion nor hidden meaning with using ''o7'' or even the salute in real life. o7 🇩🇪🇬🇧🇺🇲🇦🇺🇳🇿🇺🇳

N.B. Salutes are reciprocated from the lowest to the highest levels and are indicative of a feeling of mutual trust and respect. The proposed EDO 'emote' will be replicating the o7 rather than o/ ... just saying

Perception is reality in the eye of a consumer. If Frontier continues to lull console players along, they're eventually going to lose a large portion of them. If they do come back it's going to be with mistrust and a lot of skepticism.
I'm sorry but reality is reality and they're not lulling anyone along. They have said very clearly that development on the console version is on the backburner until the PC version is in an acceptable state when many companies wouldn't have even been that honest. They will let us know when they believe it's satisfactory and development continues. That's about as straightforward as it gets.

I also challenge that they're going to lose any mentionable portion of the console playerbase. The reason people are mad is because you want to play it. Let's all stop acting like it's some moralistic grand stand against the Big Bad Company and keep it real; you want to play Odyssey and you want to play it way sooner than later. I don't believe that pushing it back several months to get it in a playable state is going to cause anyone to just lose the desire to play it. Way more people will buy it than won't.

Greetings Commanders,

As we reach the end of another month, we are delighted to share the latest development progress from the team.

Last week saw the release of Odyssey Update 7 which brings big changes to Conflict Zones such as anti-air defences, rocket troopers, and dogfighting. If you missed last month’s Development Update, you can check out the turrets in action here or you can jump into Odyssey right now to try it for yourself!

Issue Watch
We’ve had a lot of feedback since our August post and have been hard at work tackling your most pressing issues: not just from the Issue Tracker, but from all corners of our community. We’re pleased to report that with Update 7 we tackled a number of pertinent bugs and those issues have now been closed on the tracker.

You can see Update 7’s full release notes here for more information.

To kick things off, we would like to update you on the key issues as voted for by our community on the Issue Tracker. Remember, you can visit the Issue Tracker any time to vote for your top issues or make a report.

1. FPS performance in Odyssey

With the bulk of our navmesh optimisations now in place with Update 7, alongside a number of other changes, our code team is now looking at further optimisations with an immediate focus on lighting, slated for release in Update 8. Further work is also underway for Update 9.

2. Anti-Aliasing on Foot

In Update 7 we improved anti-aliasing on planetary terrain in close-up. Further improvements will arrive in Update 8 and we will be looking at other areas for improvement in future updates.

3. FPS stuttering at on-foot settlements, apparent after Update 5

We have identified further improvements to the navmesh to be made in Update 8 which we believe will substantially improve instances of stuttering upon disembarking at a settlement.

4. Ship-Launched Fighter Potential Exploit

We made changes to address this issue for Horizons in this month’s 3.8.5 release. We’re pleased to confirm these will be coming to Odyssey in Update 8.

Additionally, we hope to address a number of other issues in our Update 8 development. Keep an eye on our channels for regular updates!

Upcoming Updates and Content
Please note: These are at varying stages of progress. This is not an exhaustive list of everything that is being considered. They are not final, so they are subject to change. We will keep you updated with news and details as they progress, and we expect the content to release over the coming few updates. With that said, here’s a look at just some of the features and content in consideration, to go alongside the other development work required for future updates.

Update 8
The team have been incredibly busy working not only on optimisations and fixes but to bring new and exciting content to Odyssey. You can see a preview of some of the features slated to release in Update 8 below:

Emotes
You asked for them! Update 8 will bring a new way to not only express yourself, but also physically communicate with a series of emotes coming to the game. The full set features the following emotes: Wave, Applaud, Point, Agree, Disagree, Stop, Go and of course Salute. These emotes are context sensitive so can be directed towards fellow Commanders. The ‘point’ emote will also provide in-world makers to highlight points of interest/objectives to other Commanders in your Team.

Let us know in the comments what you think of these new emotes!

Four-Player Multicrew
As mentioned in Development Update 3, we are pleased to confirm that the following ships will all receive an extra seat to enable four Commanders to board them: Anaconda, Beluga Liner, Federal Corvette, Imperial Cutter, Type 9, Type 10, and the Alliance Crusader.

Odyssey Engineers in Colonia
For those far from the bubble in Colonia, the release of Update 8 will add four new Engineers for Commanders to visit, offering various ways to enhance your weapons and suits.

Megaship Interiors
With Update 8, Megaships will receive interiors for Commanders to visit once they have docked. These interiors will offer various services that can be found on stations such as Vista Genomics and Frontline Solutions. Rescue Megaships will not feature interiors at this time.

Horizons Cosmetics in Odyssey
We’re pleased to confirm that this work is now complete! From Update 8 you will be able to use your flight suit cosmetics with Odyssey’s suits.

Content In Future Updates
We are pleased to announce the following features are currently in development and will be released in updates beyond Update 8:

Twin-Seat Combat SRV
We’re thrilled to announce that a new twin-seat combat SRV is in advanced development! A full reveal including a deep-dive into its features and capabilities can be expected closer to release.

Further Mission Additions and Improvements
We also have exciting plans to further extend Odyssey’s mission set. This will add further mission variety and elements, making the gameplay experience much more dynamic.

Fleet Carrier Interiors
Following the incredible reception to the announcement of Megaship interiors, we are delighted to confirm Fleet Carrier Interiors will be coming to Odyssey in the coming months! You can expect more details on these very soon.

We hope that this update has given you plenty to be excited about as bring new and exciting experiences to the Elite galaxy. What we’ve shared today is just a snapshot of what we’re working on and more details will come on all of the above in future monthly development updates and across our other channels!

Thank you as always for your continued feedback and support.

New SRV? Fleet Carrier Interiors? Emotes? Have I been knocking back the Lavian a bit too much? Awesome stuff is all I can say! o7

Excellent work FD, very much appreciated, however shame all this had not been considered prior to launch, pretty logical reasoning!

Not wanting the world but how about simply being able to sit down, or even better, ordering a drink!

And Gods forbid actually being able to walk/climb into your ship!

[carrier interiors] is quite interesting to me, if we can actually see witchspace while jumping that would be MARVELOUS
This little tidbit grabbed my attention as well, IF....

(pls don't make it like another copypaste of concourses pls)
.... as you say, it's not a station interior slapped onto a fleet carrier. Not only does the design need to be unique to interest me, but the NPCs need to be unique as well. For example, if it truly is MY fleet carrier, I expect a welcome worthy of this fact. I suspect David Braben gets a different type of welcome from his people when he enters Frontier headquarters than I would as a tourist coming for a visit. Heck, put that new salute emoji to use and assign it to the marines on duty. If we can't have an NPC crew on our ships, maybe at least we can have an NPC crew (with proper social interactions) on our fleet carrier.

But that's a very big if, and I'm not holding my breath.

Really nice features incoming. And i really mean it.

But after 7 updates there is little improvement to 2 of the most basic features: performance and lighting/gamma
The the only notable performance increase *() i got was by replacing my 2y old i7-9750h / GTX1660TI laptop with a Ryzen 9 5900HX / RTX 3080 one. 😒

*(without resorting to tricks like FSR upscaling - which are not really designed to increase performance for 1080p resolutions)

Yes the optimisation is an issue but it's a seperate one. They're adding what, a new skin to rock solid SRV's? A new concourse skin you reach from the same landing plaform, just on megaships this time. Emotes .. to avatars that already run, sprint, walk and jump. All of these updates are peripheral, 2.0 stuff. Optimisation is 1.0 but it's still a seperate issue.

And next week on Crying Over Spilled Milk .. we bring you Water Under The Bridge ! ;) o7

If these are such minor things to add, why is it that they won't they be ready for a few months? Surely if it was as trivial as you say, they'd be ready now, or by the next release?

Logic.

Hope these have a rare chance of happening. Nothing more annoying trying to get a few quick missions in then over half the missions spamming "Incoming Enemy" mission updates. How about you set the chance of a mission update to the same percentage chance of getting Settlement Defense Plans?

OH HEY, how about fixing raw materials spawning inside asteroids, fleet carrier menu locks, and missing interdiction bars??????????? Stop nerfing things, and making things more difficult for players before you FIX all the broke stuff please.

Emotes? Really? Hope there is a "Flipping the Bird" emote. Now that is one I might use!

Emotes, who the hell asked for that , that’s an all time low right there
You may want to go to the eye doctor if you didn't see all the post thanking them for the emotes right before you commented.

Thanks for the Great News Arthur. I hope this communication continues on upcoming features.

Well, some interesting new additions to come - very nice to hear about!

But, no mention of the "significant improvements" to performance we (as Odyssey players) were led to believe would commence with Update 8? The notes on performance here:
Good question, though would it be safe to assume that the focus on lighting is where they are now looking for significant improvements, as it were?

Would be nice to see a more personal experience from Fleet Carriers towards owner rather than a generic greeting that any old commander gets. They are 5bn credits after all, not too much to expect a "hello boss" now and again.

Maybe a Owner Specific landing pad, a series of greeting from ATC specific to the owner?
That's something I've thought about too. My own vision of how I would prefer it is to have control address you as the owner, with there being a closed docking bay that opens on command, no requesting docking as such, then you fly into the bay where you can land on a master pad and see a selection of your other ships parked, ready to go. Bonus points for being able to run between them to board and prepare for launch. Then have the elevator taking you either to your own personal space, bridge or visitors lounge area, like the current interiors show.

This is true, I will no doubt get it if and when it's released on console but think your estimation of a few months is probably a year out of whack.
