So much for Elite: Dangerous cartographic accuracy

Despite being "only" 1300 LY from Sol, and having been catalogued even before Elite: Dangerous was released, neither GW Ori nor GW Orionis can be found in game nor on any third party game database.
Not at my computer now so not sure if it will work but did you try putting the HD or HIP number in the search? Often you can find stars named differently but are searchable using those in game. Try searching for HD 244138

Requires unknown permit.
Well, my actual bad. HD 244138 maps to HIP 25689 in game. But as mentioned, it requires an unknown permit. And every star for at least 50 LY in every direction also requires an unknown permit. Why is that section of the galaxy blocked off I wonder?

Too bad that star wasn't in the Wikipedia list of 'stars in Orionis constellation' back when those permit locks weren't there yet, I would've visited it then.
The permit locks are "for future content", probably possible Thargoid and/or Guardian stuff in that space (Col 70 Sector).

Can you link where FD says that sector is for future content?

No, I can't. At least I can't recall (not very definite proof, haha) them posting here anything about that specific sector.

I probably could find a link where they say the permit locked areas are reserved for future content, if I did trawl the Forums deep enough. :)

Hey CMDR,

Thanks for reaching out to us about this.

Here in Customer Support, we don't have these details so you would be better off posting in this in our forums where you may get more details: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forums/dangerous-discussion/

Sorry we can't provide more details but let us know if you have any other queries.

It might have been in the 2.1 patch notes (when they locked it off) but those don't seem to be available any more.

They made a general statement about not every permit being obtainable due to saving space for future content pre-release, again probably since lost in forum rearrangements.

Note that "reserved for future content" doesn't necessarily mean that Frontier knew when it reserved it (or even knows now) what that future content would be ... though the Col 70 sector being Thargoid-related seems fairly well hinted at.
