State of the Game

Back later I need to return some tapes.

I haven't been able to play since just before U7 dropped, waiting for a new lead for my hotas throttle. From the outside looking in it appears U7 caused a poo storm of other issues, is it really that bad. Watched Nemolomens video, it looks pretty much unplayable.
yes and no. It fixed a bunch of stuff, broke some key stuff, then the point update fixed most stuff they just broke. U7 is a step forward now, but the key issue (performance) is pretty much the same on average. Which is no bueno. Arf talked about the 'core code team' working on 'significant improvements' 'starting witth u8' a month or so ago. What I heard yesterday made me thing that was a bit of an exaggeration. I am honestly not expecting much from u8 performance-wise anymore. If that is true that suggests to me they are simply in over their head, dont have a clear plan to get performance adequately up. As a consequence it would suggest consoles are pretty definitely out, and further DLCs would be unlikely and we'll 'only' get additional minor EDO content (as announced, and stuff like Thargoid content).

Lets hope I am wrong, and Arf's significant improvements are coming after all. :)

if they rework and redesign the engine, it will most likely some time in the future - but at the same time they cannot really show something half-baked and unfinished, this would just create the next outcry and loss of players. If you still stick with the game you have to be patient now, if they rush it, it will just be even more of a disaster than it already is.

It does sound to me as if they are busy doing a rewrite of the rendering engine and it isn't going as well as anticipated 🤷‍♂️
I get the impression that they severely underestimated what it meant to build their own game's engine. My guess is the vast majority of the development of EDO was spent building the new version of the Cobra engine.

I'm not a games developer, but I have written a few games over the years. A few years back, I wrote one, including the 2D engine behind it - I was interested in giving it a try and thought if I did, I could reuse said engine for future games. Needless to say timescales ended up becoming bloated and it took me significantly longer to complete the game as a result. Had I used some open source engine, I'd probably have done it in a fraction of the time and ended up with a better performing and more feature rich game.

Additionally, they probably find it harder to hire decent developers with such an engine - after all, who wants to get experience in a propriarty technology that won't be of any use to you if you ever leave the company?

Kinda like Asobo. They spend the year post-launch re-writing loads of code and then released it on console. Meanwhile another team released content packs and fixed for bizarre flight model bugs. :)

All good, but FD should be open about it.

this is a major reason why it is hard to get exceptional staff - you might still find decent staff, but really exceptional people won't buy into a proprietary solution.
