State of the Game

Emotes does nothing for me - Suppose I can now salute some vegetation on a remote planet - woohoo!

Don't get me wrong, the other new stuff all sounds great, I'm just hoping for performance stuff above all else, so I can do planet side stuff in VR.
I went to a Guardian site yesterday, and nearly had an unfortunate incident with Cardinal Chunder - my frame rate had dropped down to 30 - there was just me, and the Guardian site, no sentinels, but that was enough to kill it.

I know the optimisation people will be a different team to the Pretty new stuff team, so no probs with new stuff coming along, it's just that 8 had my hopes up.

I'll just have to wait and see what 8 delivers.
How else are explorers going to point at each others Asps / rocks / moons (heh) ?

Performance? No, mate - look at the FC interiors and a New SRV coming - performance isn't important when you and 3 mates can be on the same ship, is it now?

Maybe Update 9, but more likely 10 or 11...

It does sound to me as if they are busy doing a rewrite of the rendering engine and it isn't going as well as anticipated 🤷‍♂️

To me it seems more like they're playing whack-a-mole with the rendering 'is it that?' no 'how about now?' no 'this?' no ....

Not sure I approve of them saying yesterday that the rendering issues were around in 6 either - 7 has introduced new lags & pauses that I never had before. Doesn't give me a lot of belief they are on top of this.

There seems to be a persistent meme around here of 'if they just re-write it' ... does no-one remember the initial EDO UI ? :)

My guess is EDO was the 'seed' for Cobras updated rendering for other future titles. While FDs cross pollination between developing games is good I imagine its also a major headache if one flower conceals a villainous spider.

I haven't been able to play since just before U7 dropped, waiting for a new lead for my hotas throttle. From the outside looking in it appears U7 caused a poo storm of other issues, is it really that bad. Watched Nemolomens video, it looks pretty much unplayable.

this is exactly what I think as well - and as this is an innovative work, it comes with bumps and puddles on it's path, stuff doesn't go as planned and has to be redone or changed and this again effects other areas, which need to be adapted as well - we have this all the time with our programming, you try something new and it works somewhat but not as good as expected and needs more work - and more time - and even then it might in the end be different from what we expected it to be and needs more work for further changes. So if it is something like that, it is indeed iterative and the road to it might still be bumpy until it is finally done.

Trouble is, doing it 'live' is destroying the reputation of the game. The amount of goodwill burnt is akin to this

My guess is that FD need these updates to the renderer for other games.

certainly, one shouldn't do this live - but they are in a bad position already, if they are waiting too long to show something significant, they will loose even more players, who are giving up on the idea that FDev will be able to do it. And if they show something and it isn't working properly, that has a similar effect - but at least it is showing that they are actually doing something in the right direction. Otherwise people might start to think, all talk but no action.

The proper way would have been to state - we made a mistake, we seriously believed it would be ready, but we see now it just isn't - so we offer a refund for anyone who wants one and put it in early access state - so if you are playing it and it works for you, you can play on, the others can get a refund and buy it at a later time, when it will be done. It can take a while, because we need to redesign major parts of the rendering engine and our planetary generator - this would be honest and honorable.

I really doubt that a lot would actually request a refund, if they would offer it, admitting failure like I outlined above showing as well what kind of work it is, what has to be done. This would be fair towards their customers and towards their staff, which is currently under pressure and pressure is not a good motivator for well done innovative work If they would have done it like outlined above, they would have taken the pressure off their staff and raise goodwill among their customers again - people are paying for early access games, so not that many will actually go for a refund - one just has to be bold enough to be honest, straight forward admit failure and be fair to customers, who can't play the game by offering a refund,

It was broken for me when U7 dropped, but the hotfix made it as playable as pre U7. So you'll probably be fine.

Yes and no. But right on the edge in that particular case. (about an hour ago I enabled another video that might give a better idea of the "overall" performance in 7.01)

I was able to complete the mission at Low Preset, 0.65 SS and I realized afterwards that I probably could have gotten another 10 or so FPS if I had turned off "Blur". But the issue with the frame-rates was definitely that particular settlement. Most other settlements I've been to recently are nowhere near that bad.

And my methodology for tackling the mission in that video was in line with my normal play style. I'm not an up close and personal kind of combat player. I prefer distance and accuracy over wanton melee... (I don't think fast enough for that sort of play)

Last night, my BIL and I tackled a scavenger removal mission in 36 Ophiuchi to take out 22 of them. I had absolutely no issues playing on High Preset w/"Balanced" SS (RTX 2060/1440p). Though I did get killed, that was due to my own stupidity of standing out in front and not running after I took the first of 3 plasma bolts. However, I was able to rebuy and get in my ship at Miller Depot in Barnard's Star and travel back to the fray (36,000 Ls out) to help him finish.

BTW, if any of you ever play the Settlement Raids with others, you can all take the same mission at the same time and then share them with each other. When done this way, you only have to kill them all once and get credit for all of that mission that you're sharing. So even though I was killed and my mission was failed, I still got credit for the mission he shared with me. Also, its a lot faster to get back into the fray after KIA if you take your own ship since you'll respawn in orbit. Last night I was initially a passenger and so respawned at the last station I was in.

When is you repair part due in?
