Necessary - no. Nice to have - sure. The animation doesn't delay the development in any way, coders make the base, the animators build on top of it. It works in parallel. In all honesty, we shouldn't get worked up on something so insignificant. They are all doing their jobs.

Some people here love to get worked up. They wake up every day, excited about all the new opportunities to get worked up over the game they love to hate. Today it is the ability to wave at somebody. Terrible! I hate it! Just picture it: waving at somebody else. Horrible! Its probably a young person. Who is on twitter! Can you imagine it. Them being on twitter. Waving. At others! I can feel the vein in my forehead popping already! This is great! :D

The cynic in me almost wants them to add a drinking animation with literally zero gameplay addition (no drunk vision, no health refill, nothing) so they have to choose between being angry that the animations were added or being angry that it serves no functional purpose.

To you FD adding a wave animation is a sign the 'vision has been lost' and its 'not a good omen for the future' A wave emote.. Just lol. Your comment about how waving is for the 'twitter generation' was really chefs kiss. Really mate, this is peak cringe.

What, exactly, is the point then? It's already known that adding animations doesn't impact the optimization or bug-fixing process in any meaningful way, so the only thing left to be upset about is the additions themselves, which would point to a general disdain for emotes.

I know exactly what the OPs and your point is, hence why I countered with what basically accords to "not everyone in the dev team is member of the core coding group that is responsible for fixes and optimizations". You didn't say that you hate animations, neither did I accuse you of saying that. Double standards.
