Update 8?

Anybody else seen the trailer FDev posted to advertise Odyssey update 8?

Basically, we're getting 4 player MC and hand-gestures.

The first thing that I took away from this video was that FDev seem to be attempting to ignore the train-wreck that Odyssey was/is and focus on "new features" instead.
The second thing I took away from this video is that these "new features" are really, really, inane.

I mean, didn't FDev say that they were going to focus on getting PC Odyssey "fixed" prior to a console release?
How is 4 player MC and hand-gestures contributing to either of those objectives?

MC was hopeless at the best of times.
Then FDev released Odyssey, which split the user-base into two camps (EDO and EDH) which rendered MC twice as useless.
And now they're adding an extra seat so THREE other people can ignore MC instead of just 2?!

And, hand-gestures?
Yes, it would've been nice if there was an easy way for players to communicate but, erm, this isn't it.
Dunno if FDev were shooting for some kind of Fortnite-style gimmick but, erm, this isn't it.

And, are we going to talk about how some of the gestures seem to look a lot like the salute of a certain German political party from the early 20th century?
I see no way such a gesture might be abused as a means of offending. 🤨

I'd like to remain optimistic that update 8 WILL also include new optimisations, bug-fixes and improvements to the lighting but it's way, way, too soon for FDev to be trying to sweep the fundamental problems with Odyssey under the carpet in favour of advertising such trite nonsense.
The primary thing that both existing players AND potential new players need to hear, for the forseeable future, is that the existing game is being fixed.

tl:dr...

I'm seeing 5 pages of people saying "Buuut.... in a different video...."

I don't mean to sound argumentative but try framing your argument in a way that DOESN'T need for you to cite a different source in order to refute what I said about THIS video.
You didn't say that Hitler is a bad man in this post. Maybe that post wasn't about Hitler but I didn't look anywhere else. You are clearly sweeping the horrors of the Holocaust under the rug and ignoring how terrible WW2 was. Shameful.

I dont want to sound argumentative, but try claiming you do believe Hitler is a very bad man WITHOUT pointing to anything other than what is in that ONE post.

If the video was released in a vacuum ergo there was no developer blog or a long form dev stream then you might have a point. However, there was a stream over an hour in length and a blog post.

Your problem is you either didn't look for more information or did and all this thread is really about you being angry at Frontier because the things being added in addition to them working on bug fixes are not to your taste.

Nah, that's just you making assumptions about what I'm thinking.

All that I'm really thinking is that these "new features" look rather poor and I think console players might be a bit peeved that their release of Odyssey has been delayed and now FDev is producing tat like this.

I'm also thinking that it's kind of amusing how desperately a couple of people are attempting to insist that I said/meant/thought something other than what I actually wrote.

Update 8
The team have been incredibly busy working not only on optimisations and fixes but to bring new and exciting content to Odyssey. You can see a preview of some of the features slated to release in Update 8 below:
I think this should be the final nail in the coffin that is this thread.

They're working NOT ONLY on optimizations and fixes but ALSO new content. There it is.

They're doing both.

Straight from the horses mouth.

This thread, your posts QED 🤷‍♂️

Console players were always going to be peeved even if the blog post made no mention of new stuff.

Do you even know what you wrote?

He may be on to something though. I just watched a part of the news on TV, and they were talking about some football club performing terribly in Portugal yesterday or something while clearly ignoring the weather tomorrow. Didn't watch the rest.

If the weather in Portugal was a Tsunami, I'd certainly criticise the news for discussing football instead.

Try again.

Possibly the outrage is because it has been posted by Frontier as an independent trailer?
Fair enough, although a trailer that just has a screen saying "we're working on it" in regards to performance would be a bit weird, don't you think? The verbiage is clear in the video that it's just highlighting new features coming and not necessarily a declaration of the state of the game.

It isn't in defense of the OP - even I can't get a wave to resemble a salute, and I have an exceptionally fine imagination (I would have, I play this game!)...
But, as has already been mentioned earlier, the "fan base" for this game has both happy and disillusioned members... Some look for any exuse to be outraged, and Frontier 'brought to account' for doing something positive.

100%. I said it in another thread yesterday but the paradox of it all is the funniest part to me. The outrage at its core originates from a desire to play Odyssey, so the doom-mongering and bad attitudes towards the devs are disingenuous anyways. If they didn't care about Odyssey and didn't want it they wouldn't be on the forums in the first place moaning incessantly about a console release date and shouting down anything they incorrectly perceive as a roadblock to their new expansion.

Even though every new feature that gets announced is coming to their game eventually too...

It's impatience and internet outrage, that's all. It can't be reasoned with.

Edit: Not to mention the fact that when console players DO get Odyssey it will be much more feature and performance complete. I'm effectively paying to beta test a product until it's worthy of console players and I'm still having fun and being patient and objective. They haven't even bought it yet and are acting entitled.

Maybe if they included a link to the update blog at the bottom of the video it could have helped. But yeah, the sentiment mostly seems to be along the lines of people mad that FDev's building's gardener wasn't hauled inside to optimize code.

I don't really do "outrage".

With regard to the gestures, though, let's be honest; whenever a writer of fiction gives a group any kind of "sticky-outy arm" salute, it's usually because they're the baddies and the writer is referencing authoritarian, extremist, xenophobic, philosophies.

There's always going to be nobbers in games and if they know they can offend other players in some way, they will.
That being the case, it's probably best to avoid giving them extra tools to help with that, however subtle those tools might be.

As I've said already, numerous times, I just find it a bit disappointing that the new features FDev have chosen to showcase, for update 8, are such a bunch of minor things.
I dunno, maybe (as I've also already said) that could be seen as a good thing because it means the majority of their effort is going into fixing the game.
Fingers crossed, I guess.

Come on man. It's quite clearly a reference to the o7 salute that the community and devs have been doing since the beginning of the game. Every stream begins and ends with "o7 Commanders." Your far-right fear is creeping into places it doesn't belong. There's a clear origin for the salute in the game and any suggestion to a malevolent origins or otherwise is intentional defamation. Salute =/= Hitler. Every military salutes to this day, including the ones that fought against and beat Hitler because they found him just as evil as your average reasonable person.

That would be the logical assumption, yes, but don't forget they also clearly outlined other things coming beyond update 8 as well. There's much more in the pipeline; there's no reason to believe Elite Dangerous/Odyssey is slowing down anytime in the near future.
