Comms

In WoW (for example) you have time to stop and read text, I really don't believe that will be the case for Elite: Dangerous

Think about all the things you will need to be in control of at any given time... especially during combat.

I really hope that ED is intense enough for text communication to be completely useless most of time, only really there for when you are floating around a space station having a cup of tea ;)

EDIT
There is a quick test you can do:-

1. Load up Frontier: Elite II

2. Get into combat

3. Without pausing, pretend to:-
Type: "Hey dude, come and help me out I am getting attacked again"
Read: "Where abouts" (5 second delay)
Type: "To your left"
Read: "This one?" (2 second delay)
Type: "No, thats me!!!"
Read: "Ok, sorry, this one?" (4 second delay)
Read: "Yepp, thats the one"

4. Repeat step 3, this time saying it

5. Which one worked better?

hmm ... targeting system for your group must exist.
press a button - and the goal is now captured in your sight lights for the rest of your group members

There will be a few of direct commands which could be done with this method, however many thousands that couldn't...

Nothing beats voice for effient communication

Nothing beats voice for effient communication

The main reason voice works better is because you're not using it elsewhere in-game, which means you can still do absolutely everything else at the same time. If you have to type things, then you're taking your hands off the controls and that's when you become a sitting duck.

For combat in a group voicecomms is absolutely essential. We don't let people fly with us more than once or twice without it in EVE. Of course, then we have to impose regulations for squad comms, keep the comms clear, no chit-chat, no questioning orders (other than didn't copy that order)...

The trouble with speech is its noisy and you cant vet the language. This is a problem if you have young kids and also if you have someone sleeping nearby. You can wear headphones but others will still hear you.

I have in the past used both headphones, speech and text to communicate but those using speech tend to ignore text (until its too late :) ). On the other hand, you miss-hear someone on voice but can scan back through text.

I am a pretty quick touch typist - can't imagine what is like for a slow non-touch typist to use text (and if you are using a two handed console game controller it must be even worse).

Me thinks voice is really the way to go tbh. Just got try and curb my excitement in the heat of battle (and the volume of laughter).

Is it wrong to make your family wear ear plugs at night? ;)

On a different note - if we are able to make our own groups and include/exclude players from it, couldn't those white and blacklists also include other groups (including the All Player Group)?

This would enable players to effectively form their own corps, alliances and exclude griefers (if they want to) without the overheads and any other in-game structure to maintain it.

Is voice going to be viable outside your immediate team (used by whole instance) ? - I think probably not.

Hailing all nearby players...

As for hailing i would rather that a nice female voice or something says something along the lines of "You are being hailed" and then i could choose if i wanted to accept the hail or simply ignore it.

If someone was being very persistent, i would be able to "mute" hails.

Geez, sounds like being in school! Where did the fun go in games!? :p

Good voice comms will be essential. Glad that a hailing system for nearby ships seems to in their plans, will deffo help immersion in my opinon.

What about when "Commander Buxom Blonde", who's always been sweet and all-things-girly in her text chat, speaks to you in a voice that wouldn't sound out of place grunting in the ring on WWE? Now that would make me laugh HARD! :D
