I always considered capitalism to be a bad step in the journey to a bright future.
There will be a point where money as a concept is no longer viable since into that far future we would have everything we need or want at the push of a digital button.
When is that bright future coming? I don't know, but as a pessimist I always try to think that it'll happen eventually, maybe not this century, or even millennium but it has to happen if humans still aren't extinct by that point.
it has it's problems though - I was a game master in pen&paper roleplay and thought for a long time about game mechanics which work without money or at least without to actually count the money. I came up with a system, which is using classes of wealth instead of actual counted money. Someone can have as many stuff as he wants from that class his wealth is of - but if he is selling something of that class, this isn't making him more wealthy either - selling something a class higher several times made him advance to the next wealth class - but buying a single item a class higher decreased his class. He could not afford something 2 classes higher though.
This is a moneyless system - but it has it's flaws because there is no real incentive to do anything normal, and if people would want to or be able to do something exceptional is more than just questionable. We know from communist systems, that they aren't working due to this lack of incentives to do something exceptional or even just to perform their best in normal activities - people just do the least necessary and that gets a society nowhere.
So in the end people will invent something again, which functions as money and can be amassed and earned - and this is the problem with a moneyless system in general.
edit:
so no, it won't happen - what will happen though is an unconditional income for everyone - we need that with rising AI activities, there is no way around that, if governments want it or not, in the end we need that or there will be revolutions. Too many jobs will just disappear and be done by AI, better and faster - but those people, who worked these jobs before need an income or they will rebell - so this is certainly coming, an unconditional income for everyone.
it has it's flaws as well though, because people lack purpose in this case - and this creates a totally different branch of problems to solve. Eventually the future might be bright, but don't count on it this century - this century has so many problems ahead, that it is kind of a dark century to come - and if we'll make it through it unharmed, unfortunately questionable.
