Tips for Exploration Journey?

For painless landing on high-G worlds, what's worked for me is to not touch the vertical thrusters (up or down), and descend with forward thrust at a shallow angle. I'll start at maybe -20 or -30 degrees, coming out of glide. As I get lower I'll slowly level out. Once really close to the ground, I'll probably be maintaining a pitch of less than -5, and I'll have been gradually reducing the throttle too. Eventually you can just sort of "kiss" the ground at a slow speed, and lock down. Or alternately, come to a stop only a few meters above the ground, and then very gently tap the downward thrust, using an analog stick. The latter is riskier because you might misjudge your altitude, or how gently you can use the control.

I usually take at least a small amount of shield damage. My last notable high-G landing was at the 45 G planet using my DBX, with no shield damage. I used the forward-throttle-only method. (Screenshot taken only seconds after locking down).

45g? 😱 Didn't know that there are landable planets with such high gravity... Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, that's the new record highest gravity landable planet, courtesy of Varonica. The previous record was around 11 G... so yeah. Blew that one out of the water. ;)

Hello Commanders, a friend and I would like to start an exploration journey and we are looking for tips in which direction to head. We outfitted our ships quite well I hope, tips appreciated. My build: https://edsy.org/#/L=F600000H4C0S40...ts405faK03G0022_Pc6y002jwG090_W0,EXPLORACONDA

We are not sure yet which route to take, so first some background regarding our expectations and then some questions:
  • I have participated in the DW2 exploration tour (at least partly) and know about the many great waypoints. But I think we would prefer discovering something new (generation ships, life forms, nice vistas, first codex entries if anything left, or even Raxxla or other mysteries). So we are more interested in exploring than sightseeing. We do not have a specific time schedule or distance in mind. We are not in a hurry and want to fly out into the black as long as we have fun doing that.
  1. Which direction from the bubble and which sector is least explored? In which direction would you head, if you would want to get into "uncharted territories"? Is it possible to get some data about this, e.g. with EDSM?
  2. Are there any current clues about Raxxla which can be tackled down to locations / regions in the milky way, or other interesting mysteries? We might head in that direction.
  3. Do you have any "mechanical" tips how to do exploration right. How do you make sure after entering a system that you don't overlook something interesting? Scan all bodies with the FSS? Could be a bit daunting. Just do a honk and check the FSS wavelength diagram to see if there are some interesting objects? Actually I miss the old system where you could check the system map for interesting constellations - that is not possible anymore without scanning all bodies, right?
  4. Even if I said we are more explorers than sightseers, sightseeing tips are of course also welcome, when you think it is a must see.
Thanks and o7

You can't go wrong in using the Galactic Mapping Project / EDSM as a resource for something like this (it won't show you Raxxla though! ;)). Its probably the definitive resource that still hosts the majority of known POIs, dating back to the very beginning of exploration in Elite Dangerous. So if you check out the regions where there's a dearth of known EDSM/GMP POIs, you'll see at a glance where to go, and where to avoid. Check that link and you'll see the intermediate eastern regions are still largely unexplored in terms of known POIs.

Its what I use when I set out on a journey like this, one where I want to avoid the beaten path and head into regions where little is known about.

Good luck! o7

Anyone with a manual how to land without a scratch on high-g worlds? I just know to approach more like a plane. Low approach angle, don't roll, no vertical thrusters. But kind of difficult to search for a landing spot on the ground... Still remember one of the first waypoints in DW2 - I made it to the surface in one piece but with scratches, but ships falling from the sky everywhere... Busy times for the hull seals :D
Stay horizontal and stationary, hovering. Just dab the flight assist off for a second and then straight back on again, noting how many meters you drop. Continue to do that at intervals (returning to stationary hover in between) until you are pretty much on the ground. A few meters above the ground, put pips to shield and let gravity do the work, not your down thrusters!

In terms of where to go looking, EDSM's Expeditions page can have some great ideas for places to go, things to see. I'm running this one at the moment :
Operation Marduk
The Everlasting Expedition has lots of things to see as well ... but be aware that it's a very advanced route and you'll need a 70+ly capable ship with Jumponium boosting. Or a carrier. I got round with a 73ly Anaconda that I'd occasionally switch to 76ly for the more difficult places to get to and I was needing +50% boosting for some of the waypoints.

Combine that with Kamd at the Kamd Site and you'll get more ideas than you can shake a pointy stick at (low g world. Wouldn't recommend shaking the pointy stick in those high g worlds). You put your start and end points into Kamd, plus jump range and I put 10 for the number of acceptable additional jumps. The places there have been visited by other people though ... Always good to be looking around for a good campsite between sessions.

That's what I found at the end of my last session ... I start looking for promising looking places with Odyssey atmospheres or pretty gas giants that I can put on the horizon. Finding trees like this was a bonus, especially as the scan planets -> get PoI seems broken at the moment.

Thanks, that seems to be a really good resource. Will definitely check that out.

Followed your guidance and improved my shield quite a bit. 885 MJ with just a minor decrease in jump range. Current build:

Awesome, that looks good. It'll give you some decent protection against bumps and bruises (so to speak) and isn't sacrificing much jump range.
