So.. 80k in fines... now what?

So after a lot of tedious cargo hauling i finally got the creds to buy a viper mk3. I fit it out and decide I want to do some bounty hunting. A few targets in one of my prey drops some tobacco. Nice! Free creds I figure. I scoop the loot and head over to Chango dock since I read somewhere that there's a black market there. Go in all stealthy with silent mode to avoid getting scanned in order not to get flagged for fines and everything.

Unfortunately no luck, there is or was no black market available in Chango. Annoyed with this I figure i go try my luck at the other station in system. Only I forget to use silent running while leaving Chango and get scanned by the authorities.. BAM! 40k creds fine for 'stolen' goods (while in fact I got them fair and square from a wanted target... but that's besides the point).

With 36k creds left on my account I figure I better sell those goods quickly in order to avoid becoming wanted and going down that slippery slope. I fly over to the other station, dock all stealthy again and go to the black market to sell the goods. This time however i get slammed in the face with the 'Unable to complete transaction'-error. I go back to the forums to find out what's going on and read about that jettisoning the cargo and re-scooping it might fix the problem. I undock, drop the cargo (and pick up another 600creds in fines for jetting near station) and scoop it back up again. Another authority ship scans me and I get hit with another 40k fine.

Now I'm at 80k in fines, 50k-ish of which is debt and am wondering what I'm supposed to do now. Do I ignore the fines and go criminal? Do I even have a choice since I won't have the time to get the amount of creds before the timer on the fine expires? I'm at a loss and am really wondering if this is how the game is meant to be. If so, please tell me more about the pirate way of life and commanders beware when you see me on your contacts list.

You should be able to at least sell those goods at the original location that you picked up the bounty from.

Sorry, but it s only your faut. .. you forgort silent runing, you jetisson next station...

Nope, tried a dozen of times to sell them in I-Bootis but just getting the error repeatedly. Just managed to sell them in Freeport but a significant lower price. Now my soul-crushing debt is even more soul-crushing. :(

I'm not saying it isn't but to be fair, these rules and even more the consequences were never clearly explained in-game. Only due to my extensive forum reading I even knew about silent running with illegal cargo in the first place.. And 40k (per scan!) in fines for what turned out to be roughly 10k creds in Freeport and an estimate 20k in I-bootis (which was broken) seems excessive..

unforgiven

Sooo came across some gold just floating about in the Dahan area and jumped to Beagle 2 to sell it, seeing as they import it and all. Got scanned as I was entering dock and picked up a huuuuge fine. Nevertheless I paid up with a (fixed) smile and cleared my slate or so I thought. Left the station and immediately got picked on by system security vessels. Fortunately I managed to get out of mass lock pretty sharpish and jumped away. I thought it was just a temp. bug but 2 days later I picked up a ton of legally acquired gold (erm it was from Freeport but the friendly broker printed off a nice certificate of ownership) headed over to Asellus and as soon as I approached Beagle 2 landing the Rozzers were all over me like cheap aftershave. This time I only got away with 35% of my hull intact. The thing is, what's the point in paying the blasted fine if you're going to be under a death sentence as soon as you get in range of the locals guns anyway? the 'Wanted' sign wasn't illuminated, the only indication something may be amiss was a small red triangle next to the info display. Should I ticket it? Or is this WAI and I'd best spend the rest of beta well away from Asellus Primus?

Yes I understand your concerns, it is not the 'law' as it is well designed and grants a fair game (as well as an interesting playing) but as we all know it is pretty unbalanced yet, that's normal in beta stage.

But I also want to know how is the fine calculated, is it a mixture between the value, qty, and kind of misbehavior?, no one knows, be aware of that calculation will be great to understand, so you can calculate the risk for a given piracy mission.

-Don't you think so?

Hmm, why do people think stolen goods shouldn't be stolen - even if you kill someone who is wanted you are still stealing his goods - he might have bought them goods with his own hard earned money, so in fact when you kill him and take his good, they ARE stolen - you have just become a smuggler!

If you don't want to do the time, don't do the crime - PAY YA FINES!

Another lesson learned here - don't jettison cargo within the no fire zone - I learned this one as well when I abandoned a mission I took by mistake and wanted to get rid of the cargo - Oh well - I've never done it since, and you won't now you know about it.

Hmm. Well we're still in beta - so now is a good time to LEARN - be a devil and DON'T clear your save - try being a criminal, you never know you might get better at knowing where the black markets are, better at smuggling, better at killing and taking other people "paid for" good etc. etc.

if you just clear your save, what are you going to do when it goes live and been playing for 6 months ???

Practice, practice some more, and then when you've done that... practice more.

I did something similar where I had accidently racked up a huge fine debt. Unable to pay it, broke, unable to even buy gas, I had to clear my save. ED kinda reminds me of those old Sierra adventure games. Back when the game didn't hold your hand all the way and it was possible to actually LOSE. When you reach some important point of no return and were missing a necessary item and were forced to start over.

they call them "growing pains" (learning about consequences for your own actions), but really they should call them "groin pains"... because thats what it tends to feel like when you are going through them.

Have u just try a deco/ reco ? Sometimes, i can't sell in black market or legal market, deco/ reco solved it...

Concerning fines, scan and other law rules, it s fine for me. ED learning is hard and must stay hard :)

So.. Thus far I have received a bunch of reactions telling me about what I did wrong, that it's a beta thing, that the game is meant to be hard, etc. All good and all but it's all hindsight talk. The main question in my topicstarter was 'what do I do now?'. I have no intention on resetting my safe cos' that's just lame (+ I didn't even knew this was possible other than the beta resets) I just want suggestions on how to continue the game after getting an insurmountable fine. Any suggestions?

I logged a ticket for beta 3 that the wanted flag doesn't go away even if the fine is paid. Reconnecting fixes it but as long as the Wanted sign is by your fuel gage, they will come after you even if there is no fine to pay.

Granted I'm new to the game....

1) as mentioned above, flee federation space while you gather the funds to clear your bounty.
2) If you die in the meantime, the bounty is cleared as I understand it.

As far as why....

3) you either acquired goods that were stolen in the first place, or you stole them from the person you killed. If I steal something from a drug dealer, I'm still a thief even though he himself is a criminal.
4) not knowing the laws is no defense. I'f I'm caught street racing, they give me the same fine as everyone else even if I don't know what that fine is before I do it.
5)The fine shouldn't be less than the "reward" from the illegal activity. Otherwise everyone would just smuggle without hiding it. smuggling is supposed to be sneaky.

Yep... i think the answer is, beat feet out of Federation space. Go visit the Alliance, or the Empire, and keep your nose clean :)
