I usually play with a female avatar.

What? Respect my virtual life choices, dammit.

I've been playing online games since... 94/95 and this has always been the case, I don't bat an eyelid now and I'm always amused by 'but DD is a dude?!!!!' comments I come across from new players who catch on. Personally I've always played a guy.

I've got no problem with boys wanting to be girls or vice versa. However, I would like to ask why? Is it a bit of role-playing or is it a strategy to soften the response of another player in the game interactions?
I'm not criticizing , I'm only curious (about wanting to be female)!:D

As you cannot know whether the a avatar or the real player are anything like they tell you, it's probably best to avoid chatting up (or getting more intimately involved with) others. I have heard some pretty funny/scary stories over the years........
There are actually pretty nice stories out there as well. A friend of mine chatted with a fellow gamer for years thinking that the other person was a male. When he finally learned the truth, they were soon married.

Well, there are loads of reasons.

1. Usually female characters in games are focused on speed and technique, whereas male characters tend more towards power and defence. Less so in MMOs, there's usually no difference there.

2. In most games, your character is placed first and foremost in the middle of the screen. If you're going to spend most of your time staring at your character's backside, it may as well be a female backside.

3. MMOs have a large and varied audience, but at least part of this audience is horny adolescent boys. If they think you're female, they'll give you all kinds of items in exchange for continued conversation.

Of course, some see themselves as female in real life, or wish to be female in real life, but the vast majority have other motives.

Personally I'm not too fussed about whether I'm perceived as male or female, and given that I'm speed-oriented (and maybe the backside thing comes into play a little bit), then it really has to be female.

Ahhh! Makes sense now, thanks DigitalDuck.
I've got to be honest; my backside looks a lot better than my face so I won't use either for an Avatar.
Also, (I know this is pathetic but I'm being honest), if I get shot down by a female character it's going to hurt my male pride a lot more than a fella doing it, even if the woman is a fella.
I'm going to be wary of ‘female' players!

I'm hoping for a first-person game, so in that case how my backside looks to me is going to be immaterial. What about voice-comms though? Would people still play as the opposite sex if they were using that kind of system. There's been talk elsewhere that text isn't going to be that usable outside of 'chat' situations. Flying and typing don't mix.

Jumpgate also saw a real life marriage of two pilots. The wedding proposal was made and accepted in the forum. (-: But I agree one should not invest hopes here if one is seriously looking for someone.

By the way in JG, which was as "twitch-based" as it can get, the few female pilots had a lot of respect, with one of them having dethroned the (until then) longstanding top ace pilot in a tournament - using a MS FF2 joystick with centering force turned off (I tried that once and hardly managed docking - and I am usually good at docking). I also witnessed a female rookie killing a vet in VO. May be related to the superior fine motor skills of women.

Was that Fell & Wyx, or a US couple? If not, then that's two marriages! :) (For those not in the JG family, they were very into a particular type of ship - we got one of the UK universities to 3d print up models of those ships, and someone got them expertly painted and mounted - awesome!).

Off topic, but if you're reading this and you've never played it go download JG from here:

Now - bear in mind you can't actually play any more, but you *can* launch the Simulator. That'll give you a great feel for the kind of mechanics it had, and how ships had mass & inertia but also drag. It'll also give you a look at the ship power systems, weaponry etc. For 10+ years, it was the best online Elite available, and still is you could argue (except it's shut down). It even has the scanner!

I don't remember the names I'm afraid, it was not in my active time in the game, I just read about it in the forum.

Yes, JG had a wonderful flight model. Sadly I played the game only a few months, because when I discovered it I was amazed but felt I still had obligations in another MMOG, later I didn't have an internet flatrate for some years, and when I was finally ready to get serious it got shut down. )-:

This is a game where the only significant female presence is alien and disruptive.
When you meet a girl in Elite space, she will probably have six legs, twelve eyes, fangs with poison dripping off, and a lot of disagreeable relatives .

Have to say I only know two female posters, but both have made a fantastic contribution to the board over many years
