The VR Lie

Direct quote from Frontier from https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/odyssey-update-on-vr-and-ship-interiors.554223/

"We understand that VR is a big part of Elite Dangerous and is a feature that holds a dedicated and passionate community. However, we do strongly believe that VR should only be enabled for on foot gameplay when we have an experience that truly matches the same quality bar that we set for cockpits. That said, we do hope that this implementation will allow our VR players the best possible transition between their VR experience and exploration on foot."

I believe every VR player of Elite took this statement to mean that "at Odyssey launch," VR support would be a flat screen projection, but work would continue to eventually provide "on foot gameplay"... that "truly matches the same quality bar... set for cockpits." I was personally fine with waiting however long it took for a decent, refined, finished implementation (I also would have been happy to wait however long it took for Odyssey to be a complete and functional product).

Smash cut to today: No VR updates planned. The flat-screen projection is all we're getting. Period.

Seems like a bald-faced lie to me (on top of a completely unfinished mess masquerading as a "full release" of Odyssey). I never would have bought Odyssey had it been made clear no proper VR support would come to the on-foot gameplay. FDev, you don't deserve our money.

This is extremely sad. Same goes with ship interiors.

Elite is slowly dying. 😢
I would have been really bumbed out before this arena style first person shooter came out if the servers were shut down, now I could really care less. They should really pony up and give refunds to anyone who wants it - I would take it today even if it meant never being able to have Odyssey. After doing a couple of missions in the game it felt like I had been to every settlement a million times before, it no longer felt like a space game to me and obviously the stations, NPC's are pretty lame and copy and paste, like the bare minimum you could do and still market it to say "vibrant filled bars and shops"... ummm sure.

I think new players will like the game who pick it up but not for much of what Odyssey added, they will like it for the Galaxy, Space and Flight model not for engineering grind and pew, pew gameplay... so basically they will like it for what Horizons already had, not for what Odyssey added.

Isnt frontier dev in Oxford, home of a gazillion uni students, surely a few decent future coders are hangin around looking for a challenge. Give em VR to sort out and keep feeden them mcdonalds and all will be well my fellow commanders.

I read FDev's statement accurately when they talked about VR earlier, as such I always considered it a possibility it would get a more complete implementation down the road, but by no means an "Full Ody VR is coming but not at launch" statement. I see little different in what they are saying at the moment, except that they have clarified that it is not on their radar at the moment. Disappointing but expected from my part.

Where I would fault FDev, is in their old (unstated) policy of putting out bad news in an accurate statement, but a manner that leaves potential for those who view facts through rose tinted spectacles to draw wrong conclusions, and then to let those wrong conclusions fester. That stinks of marketing involvement to string those who misconstrued what was said along. I don't blame the CM team. Almost certainly they were constrained as to how they could present news.

The fresh approach to information we are just being advised about certainly shows promise. I hope that Arthur is allowed to carry through what he has set out. Sure they will not be able to tell us everything (both for spoiler reasons and not tipping off competitors of major content), but even then the clear statement about VR this time, stated the current position, and crucially addressed the misinterpretation (that full VR was coming but just not now) head on (with a very clear and 'acknowledged as bad news' statement).. That last bit is a massive change in communication policy, and I applaud it.

As for VR, yes, I'm disappointed, but recently I've been using VR less myself as I cannot act as a Fuel Rat in VR (I need access to external programs and view of my keyboard, as well as access to other computers). I hope tha in the fullness of time, full VR does make it back onto the roadmap as ED in VR is just amazing.

Oh VR is all I am waiting for.. No VR then give me my dang $$$ back! I do recall them saying they were going to continue to work on VR.
If they are not then this simulation is already dead to me. No more money from my pocket to ANY Frontier title if this is truth.

Would like a dev/decision maker to confirm... no VR? really? I feel l lied to... before pre-ordering I researched this last year and the only reason I did buy is for the VR.
Sign me up for a refund as I am not even going to play this title without VR.

How do you even enter vr in cockpit? I find no option for it. Have they removed vr in odessey cockpit?

VR cockpit is still there. You just transition from being on pancake mode back into actual VR mode when entering your ship.

VR works as always except for the unfavorable 2D flat screen on disembarking. You may have to toggle the HMD in Graphics options, just like in Horizons.

O7,
