Broken Atmospheric Lighting

Looks like someone beat me to the blue star comparison (or purple in this case). This Reddit thread here perfectly highlights just how much this is impacting the game:

The once beautiful Taygeta system with its lovely purple hue now looks no different from any other system in the galaxy. Exact same issue as above, the colored lighting is just straight up gone.

Frontier should take this comparison/example of the problem and hang it in the offices of the developers who are working on fixing this!

This is good. I think this is part of the issue, but I have the feeling it's not the whole issue. Even white light should scatter and form sunset hues (assuming it works similarly to how it does irl). After seeing the comments in this thread, it seems there are at least 2 issues at hand

1. Star colour is only relevant at short distances within system (as described by Lyamecron)

2. Atmospheres don't seem to influence incoming starlight through scattering (as described in the original post). They seem to be treated the same as non atmospheric world's. This also leads to issues with hard shadows.

Water atmosphere world's appear to be working more accurately despite still being treated by the same white starlight, leading me to believe that the issues are separate.
I found a really good screenshot someone took during Odyssey's Alpha that clearly shows the atmospheric fog was in place at some point during the alpha, but has simply been MIA since Odyssey's release. Source: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...creenshots-thread.568114/page-96#post-9188189

Although these aren't the same planet, there's absolutely nothing in post-release Odyssey that looks anything like that Alpha screenshot. But that Alpha screenshot looks remarkably similar to what was shown in all the pre-alpha promotional material.

I avoided most of the Odyssey Alpha media to avoid visual spoilers, so I had no idea such effects were actually in a playable version of the game. Seeing this stark contrast between what was possible in Alpha vs what we got in the release is heartbreaking.

It's abundantly clear that there's either some sort of bug preventing these atmospheric effects from rendering, or they were cut for performance. Either way, it's a feature that Fdev really needs to get working again, along with the system-wide colored star lighting.

Good example. Alpha with it's limitations in terms of sky variations didn't seem to suffer from thís issue and colours would blend better. In Elite Dangeours I've always found that star colour would become more neutral the farther you travel away from the star itself, but now in Odyssey it's too much and colour discrepancies between, sky/star/haze are too much. I really do hope this gets fixed, for me as an explorer is number one in my list to to fix stuff.

What is so difficult about reverting to the Horizons atmospheric effects? They're clearly better looking and better performing, right?

I don’t think this issue is specific to just atmospheric worlds. From what I’ve seen so far, pretty much all stellar lighting in Odyssey seems to have lost its color.

I took two screenshots in the exact same place and time. One in Odyssey, one in Horizons. In the Horizons shot, the lighting clearly has a warm yellow hue to it. But in Odyssey, it’s just plain white light.

The comparison looks strikingly similar to the difference between Figure 1 and Figure 2 of the OP. My guess is either the trailers were shot using the old Horizons lighting engine, or else there’s some bug preventing colored stellar lighting from showing up in-game entirely.

Either way, this lighting issue seems to go well beyond atmospheric worlds. I plan to visit some blue stars in a few days and take some more comparison shots.

Yes, I made a video not too long ago showcasing the differences in Color between Horizons and Odyssey. I really hope we get these color effects back in Odyssey, they really add to the atmosphere in my opinion.

Not to be a downer, as I'm super excited about this fix making it in, but based on the wording it sounds like they're only fixing the color tint of stellar lighting, not the atmospheric fog/haze/scattering effects themselves that were present in the Odyssey trailers and alpha.

Maybe I'm wrong and they'll put that back in too, but most likely it'll need to be opened as a new issue, separate from the colored lighting bug.

In any case, I'm so glad that at least this part of it is being fixed, as it was affecting the entire game. It'll definitely be a huge improvement across the board. :)
