Exactly. "role" oriented characters. Team Fortress, Overwatch, Apex Legends, ...
I very much like that Odyssey is not particularly role oriented. Sure, you get a little with a maverick being able to cut into and disable defenses, but there's definitely no feeling of being the hero (though last-man-standing can get that way a little (failed the last time I had that, though)).

"Hero" isn't probably a very good word. "Specialist" is better, imo.

That too, but really, there are a lot of "hero" games out there, and Odyssey is not one of them.
No, Lemnis Gate is. Which is kinda a really dead game, which can serve as an illustration to the difference. Or Fractured Space. Not sure if that would be a hero shooter, since we flew space ships, but they were very specialised in general.

So just how many people, on average, are playing ED every month, as derived from said averages? 5,000?

Well...
apparently FDev reported 500,000 monthly players for their 2020 statistics
over the same period, Steam registered an average of 6812 players (every single second, 24/7, 365 days/year) - these are concurrent players at any given time.
now, for the last 6 months, Steam reports an average of 5692 players... keeping the proportion, that would mean about 400000 monthly players on average for the last 6 months.

October 2021 Steam Charts are reporting an average of 3763 players.
Keeping the same numbers as above, that would imply 275,000 monthly players (but growing)

But these are really rough estimates.
Only FDev have the real numbers.

Doom?
I'd say no.
Even with the borked EDO launch, Elite still didn't reach its historic minimum (Steam Charts) of approximately 2800 that was reached in April 2016 and October 2018

🤷‍♂️

We still arguing this??

For the 13th time.........Lies, Damn Lies, Statistics......then Politcians.

Until Frontier give us the split of how many players play from the many different platforms/Companies that have sold the product, then all numbers quoted so far are probably way, way off!

Agreed, too early to be doomin'.

That said, let's not forget that the majority of active players from Frontier games come from the sandbox Park simulators. Especially Jurassic World Evolution which also just launched a sequel.

My girlfriend is hella into those, even I gotta admit... they are pretty fun.

Last weeks forum meta was open/solo.

This week its steam stats that gets a turn.

Who knows what tedious delights next week will bring.

I love this game. And I'm genuinely worried they'll look at the figures & pull the plug in 12 mths time
There is life outside of Elite. Like you, I used to worry about the future of ED because I was so invested in this game. Now I'm not, and I'm in a better place because of it. Sometimes people say, "It's just a game!" to be snarky, but there is truth in this statement. There is peace to be found in "letting go" of our idealizations for Elite, be it what the game could / should be or how long the game has left to live. Thankfully, to quote Yoda,

... spaceship genre game (lots of them). That said, Elite still offers things these other games don't, so like you I hope Frontier fixes it and continues to expand it. If not, then I've come to terms with that possibility as well.

Yesterday at 08:30 forky was loading up my trailer with pallets to goto Louth, appologys for not logging in.
Which brings me to the next point, games like Elite (and i stand corrected if wrong) attract an older gamer.
We tend to have to work for a living and have less time to play than the spotty face erks on say crap like Fortnite.

Fly safe
