State of the Game

It would be a CATastrophy if we don't.

I like how in the "imagine playing without third party sites" thread, the suggested solution to the OP is to create spreadsheets to catalog info from the game so you can reference or use third party sites.

because the game is designed by people who want you to have to catalog data externally from the game ...which just naturally leads to third party sites. It's not going out of your way, it's the intended way. As annoying as that is to leave the game to play it. that should have been obvious when they created an API to pull data, but no kind of api to visualize or display data within the client. (like perhaps thru user extendible galaxy map filters or screens on the ship control hud).

Asking how one would play without external data is like trying to play by only using the starter sidewinder. Could you do it? most things, probably. But it's an artificial handicap to the intended way the game is setup to be played.

Use a notebook to keep track of the stations etc that you visit with their buy / sell prices, stock of ships and modules etc.
Just like most players did in all of the previous elite games - there's even a page for it at the back of the original elite manual.

Im using a 32 tab XL sheet for this game, it overtook my 28 tab one for Everquest and ive been playing that for nearly 22 years!

I think i'll stick to using Inara.

Also didn't someone once travel to Beagle Point in a sidewinder?

Really?
I just found a nice High tech system with a lower tech industrial neighbour and made that my home. It was only after engineers and tech brokers became things, I had to travel more than one jump.

Admittedly it helped that with my Elite/FFE time, I knew where I wanted to be based already for lore...

... and that when I turned up in "my old home system" it was high tech with an industrial neighbour.

if i was going to track things ..i'd code a website to do it automatically via the journal and/or the api. Rather than manually enter stuff in a spreadsheet. That's why third party solutions are intentional - it's an inevitable efficiency solution. it's what fdev wants.

The 3rd party sites represent the interwebs of the far future that were excluded from the game proper. I don't use them a whole lot, while playing, but when I do I use them on my phone/tablet (except coriolis.io) as it adds to my "experience" of the game world.

I'm glad FDev made the data accessible.

I think its reasonable that in the far future the interwebs can be used to:
  • research trade routes (and the data isn't necessarily "completely up to date") (market data)

  • search for interesting phenomena (encyclopedia)

  • find ships/modules in nearby stations (craigslist, want ads)

  • See how others have solved particular problems/issues (blogs)
But I'm also not interested in spoilers in general, so like I said, I don't use them that much and its usually only after I've tried to find whatever I'm looking for within the game.

Now...imagine the mess if they had included that functionality within the game. ;)

EDIT: as for keeping my own manual records...I have to do this for work, in a very detailed manner...so, I rather happily play my game without manually recording anything except screenshots and video...and the occasional sticky note, which will end up in the trash at some point in the next 24 hours to 6 months

No need. One of the 3rd party tools is a constant ticking feed that most of the other tools upload to, so you can literally listen to anonymised cmdr activity. And eddb.io provides a daily dump of actual state that it has remembered.
The challenge these days is doing something new with that data

No issue here. Hard to write legible while in VR, so I rely on in-game tools.
