my impressions about ED... and how I lost all my CRs in one run..

I think after one week of getting hooked up on my Oculus Rift, hands glued to my X52 Pro HOTAS, it is time for a quick summary:

1) THIS GAME IS AWESOME!
2) Am I the only one seeing the REAL world pixelated after a few hours of Oculus Rift???

Anyway, it took me a few days to figure out the real way to make money initially is really a hauler and exploiting a good route. Also it took me 3 days to figure out the entrances to the cube-like stations (BTW, the correct entrance face is on the rotating axis, rotating counter clockwise if you don't know)

I tried a few fights, but I couldn't make any serious doe. Going one by one through unidentified sources, hoping to get on a wanted npc takes forever.
Then you have the low intensity and high intensity zones... they are hard to find, when you do, more than half the time, someone steals your kill... waste of time. Maybe when I have a bigger ship with killer guns, I can finish others in a few shots, then take the money. In the meantime, I decided to stick to trucking...

So it took me about 3 days (like 8 hours) to rack up enough to get me a hauler, equip it with 2x8 cargo holds, find a good route and then exploit that...
It is surprising how even the small back and forth between systems in hyperdrive to pick up and deliver goods is addictive.

Anyway, back to the story; Yesterday I had 145k CR and I found this contract for 10 palladium for 225kCR... It was just after I decided to go to bed as I was crashing in my seat... I said to myself, this is too good an opportunity to pass... ONE MORE... ok.

I go for another pass, spend 140k CR to get the 10 palladium (about 14k each) and think to myself, easiest money I'll ever make... Anyway, as I am about to enter the station to deliver the good.
My fingers somehow were on the throttle boost button instead of the hat (you can't see your real hands with the rift), and YIPEEE, the afterburner suddenly turns on... I was half asleep at that time but believe me, it woke me up real quick...

Despite being able to align myself (kinda) with the station entrance, with the engine boost on, I still went crashing hard on the side entrance, and my hauler exploded, ejecting me in the process...

Result: my hard earned 145kCR, soon to become $230k became 5k in an instant... Now I am stuck having to start over with small transport contracts before I can even make a few thousands on one run...

That will teach me to go to bed and not push it to the limit. It just bothers me I will have to wait longer to get the money to get a big ship, but hey, this is a great learning experience... It is UNLIKELY it will happen to me again as I probably will think about this everytime I enter a station ;)

Thank you frontier, I haven't had a sense of loss playing a game forever...EXPERIENCE...THIS IS WHAT THIS GAME IS ALL ABOUT...

:)

:)

I feel ya..
I once was playing ED very late at night (in open play) and was launching from a space station launch pad while 'playing' with different mapped hot keys (Landing gear, Lights, Hard points, etc) to get used to the familiarity of it all while slowly accelerating to the mouth of the entrance..
Well, A player owned Anaconda was starting to come into the Station as I was starting to make my way to the exit.
I thought to myself, "Cool ship! gotta do a target on that bad boy!"
Yeeeaaahhhh, I already had my hardpoints deployed from playing around with the keys earlier when I accidently hit the fire button on the mouse instead of the target key (half asleep no more!!)
Well, since I was in a starter Sidewinder with loaned lasers, the other player must have thought,'what is this person doing?!?'
Soooo, in a panic I hit the forward thrust button (I'm already pretty close to the Anaconda) and smash into the Anaconda and go spinning around!
The station and the Federales had quite enough of my panic antics and opened fire..
Last thing I saw on my coms as I heard, "Eject, Eject, Eject" from the computer was 'LOL'
I was so embarrassed I logged off and went and changed my Commander name (figured he had died that day anyways :D) and stayed in solo play for about a week until I had really gotten the hang of things.
Cheers!

Oh god that's hilarious - we've all been there. The moment you press the boost button by mistake when you're actually facing a wall. Ahh, memories....

Boosting is disabled when landing gear is deployed...try doing that as early as possible into the docking process.

Ready for your mind to be blown? If you actually select the station, the little hologram that pops up of it to your left, has arrows on the sides to indicate where the entrance is ;)

Your positive attitude just got you a rep!
This happened yesterday morning when I had 'a quick blast' after a 12hr night shift....
Got 50k in cargo (IF I deliver) na, no worries.....(this was my 'just a last one) before going to bed.
Touchdown on pad and then....
Full throttle into the control tower......
I watched 50k spin around me in flames and sparks...

I said to my dawg, "Iv'e just lost 50k Cr's.........
FIFTY THOUSAND CREDITS !!!......

Thanks to this bad experience, I decided to invest in a Docking Computer... and I got another WOW moment;

As the computer takes control and you enter the station, classical music starts playing, like in 2001 Space Odyssey...

Nice touch Frontier, and thanks for this wonderful experience ;)

Now since I have that computer, docking has become relaxation time...
I am sure I won't be able live without it now.

Out of curiosity, is it quicker to dock with or without the computer?

Learning everyday ;) Thanks for the tip

At the end of the day, I think it is faster. Now I just boost to the entrance, shut down the engine, relax and enjoy the music. Overall it takes about 20s if you shut down right in front of the entrance.

The only think is that everytime, the computer lands a little roughly and it costs a couple of CRs (nothing really). That's the price to pay for the musical ambience.
I recommend it. Plus, you don't have to look to find you docking spot, or worry about pushing the wrong button, deploying your landing gear, etc...

...or boosting into the wall. :)

We've all done something like that - it's part of the learning curve.

Glad your enjoying the game - can't wait for the final release myself!!
