How do i understand the Galnet news?

I've been playing for 300 hours, I think. I started off doing trading missions, just earning credits then turned to combat jobs, again just to earn credits. While flying, occasionally I will listen to the news or attempt to read the news using the Tradepad app but I can never understand it. I want to understand the news in this game. I want to feel involved. I love this game and I can't play anything else.

I don't know if this is a silly question and I apologise if it is. I just want to know all about this game, you see.

This might help :-

It places the major articles into easy to read story lines.

Thanks. I gave it a quick look. I clicked on one of the thumbnails just scanning the text quickly(at work). It mentioned about a assassination attempt what I am assuming is a high up official of some sort. Why would this matter on the game? Does it change the game in any way?

I'll be sure to give this a good looking at when I go home.

Galnet is background flavor text that tells the story of the game. We aren't main players in the universe so its somewhat removed from us. It's also used signal a new Community Goal and many times those are preceded by Galnet stories leading up to it.

Galnet is the local news service. Think of it as tuning into NPR or another radio news channel. You can easily go your entire time of playing, never use it, and not really miss much of anything. In fact, we went a year with no/very little Galnet stories and no real CGs. Its amazing how much I missed it when it was gone. I love logging in on the weekend and having a bunch of stories to listen to the first 30 minutes or so. Its the small things.

I've never took part in a community goal before. Does working towards a goal change the news in anyway? What about when fighting in a system at a state of war?

I enjoy listening to the news too.

Indeed it does, the community goals will often be the actual player based involvement in developing situation outlined in galnet such as the recent dredger clan CG.

If you read galnet news, you might understand the background of some community goals better and make more informed decision which side to support (assuming there are sides, because sometimes it's just one sided effort to do something and CG is about reaching certain level) or if you want to get involved at all.
Anyway, the outcome of the CG (competitive or not) will determine the next part of the story and it will be reflected in the news later (and most likely have also noticeable effect in game, like for example new stations being build if the CG was about that)

Galnet also often mentions things you might actually find in game. If there's some new discovery, like, let's say - abandoned planetary outpost, some shipwreck or something like that - it might make the news and you might want to head there and check it out yourself. Sometimes there are clues in Galnet about things and mysteries that haven't been found yet.

Community Goal might be about fighting certain war that's important for some reason to one of the stories GalNet is covering, but it's not the same as just getting involved in some random war in some system - when fighting a war somewhere you might help some faction gain more "ground" and your actions matter, but it's not neccesserily a Galnet news material, as those wars and pushing for influence happen everywhere all the time.

Another way to get to know the background a bit more is going on the Elite Dangerous wiki, and look up things that you wonder about.
A good way of doing it is with a top down approach: look up, for example the Federation, the Empire or the Alliance, and you'll have an introduction to what the major superpowers are, and their history, and then you can branch out in any direction you want.

@RubberBucket

Welcome to the game. I'm new myself only having been playing for about 15 months now with over 2000 hours so far.

I think most, but not necessarily all, of the background material needed to begin understand Galnet is in the in game Codex: Knowledge Base in the following articles:
  • The Empire
  • The Federation
  • The Alliance
  • Individuals
  • Corporations
Those are the movers and shakers of the Elite Dangerous galaxy, the power players, so to speak.

The articles on The Thargoids and The Guardians are also good reads

Also, as HRDiagram said above, the Wiki also has much more information, some of which which may or may not be pertinent, but it is a good source and fills in on story happenings with all of the above since the game was launched.

In my opinion, Empire, Federation and Alliance (aka the big three) in the Codex are good places to start and then you can branch out from there...

One critical concept is the "bubble", which is the area around Sol where Humanity has colonized outward and is made up of the big three and the independent systems. It is large to us but only a very small portion of the galaxy.

There is also a much much smaller bubble in Colonia where Jacques, a retired cyborg spec ops commando who is a bartender, jumped his station "Jacques Station" and it mis-jumped and ended up 22,000 LY from the main bubble. The station was eventually found by commanders in game. Jacques, himself, recently went missing as well.*

There are also several areas around certain nebulas where the Thargoids have attacked stations in the past and more recently are seeing a buildup of Thargoid presence and activity not seen since the end of the last Thargoid war a few years back.

This should be enough to get you started...

There are also various threads on these forums where news is both posted and discussed by the players. You can find many of them by simple searching for "galnet" in titles only.

It can and does often, but sometimes you can tell FDev has a story arc they are going to force while giving us a choice. Usually with modules as rewards.

About war systems. Those aren't normally directly connected to Galnet, that's the BGS (Back Ground Simulation.) Choosing a side during a war will increaser or decrease the Influence that Minor Faction has in the system. If you work it hard enough you can move them up or down in the system rankings.

There are probably thousands of pages discussing the BGS. This is normally a good place to start learning about it. http://remlok-industries.fr/the-complete-background-simulation-guide/?lang=en

Thanks for the info. This clears up some questions I was going ask. I do have a question about CGs: do you have to have a strong, engineered ship(if in combat goals) in order to participate? Or a big ship to transport goods?

Big ship for transporting goods works great. I use a T9 in PG (Solo with friends).

I've found that I can participate in most CGs without a beefy ship or even an engineered one. It will still ahve to be built properly for the task though, like combat specifically if that's what the CG is. Although now you can also participate in combat CGs on foot in Odyssey...

when did this happen? i must have missed it.

i have yet to make the pilgrimage out to Colonia but if there is a storyline around that event, i may need to do so.
I may have misunderstood something I read somewhere and now cannot find again...

I have edited my post above accordingly...
