Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | Update 9 Notes

  • Rebalance made to the "Bloom" setting on low and medium graphics settings.
Since release I had to turn down bloom to Medium because it was washed out on High and had that wax lense soap opera effect. Now Medium looks pretty similar (albeit a little less pronounced) as High. Is it actually supposed to look like this? :( I can't remember it being like that in Horizons at all.

I think I'm gonna finish these kill pirate missions and then get into my FDL or Krait mkII and head to a CZ or high res to see how the targeting works with a different ship. I guess they'll turn red once I open fire on them. This is kind of broken and would probably need to be in the next hot fix, don't want to give up on my credit/mats farming just yet.. :D

Overpowered? For what?
Only in the sense that it negates any need for trade off and allows you to fit extra modules. I'm afraid that's not something I like, I still don't like the fact that the DBX got an extra slot for example because people moaned they couldn't fit everything they wanted into it, despite the fact that was the point in the first place.

I don't get why that is such a bad thing though. That extra slot could be used for cargo racks, a second limpet controller (more limpets = less waiting around say for collection) or dare I say it a HRP/MRP - multirole ships are pretty spongy in Open, in part because of the module creep particularly because of limpets.

dude the GTX 1650 has similar VRAM to the 1060 and iirc its faster even GDDR6 vs GDDR5.
Also it shouldnt be that important for 1080p texture level

Doesn't matter how fast the VRAM is if the assets that need to be in it don't fit.

EDO has always been hungry for VRAM and while they've tried to mitigate this, I still wouldn't expect a great experience out of much any card with 4GiB or less. Assuming FX quality (which is shader heavy and influences the performance cost of glass and reflections on concourses) has been reduced, VRAM is the next most probable reason for insufficient performance on concourses.

Display resolution matters, to a degree, but most assets aren't frame buffer, and altering resolution only has a modest impact on VRAM use.

This probably isn't the right thread, but I guess it gets a lot of views at the moment. Hopefully someone else can have a look and see if they experience the same thing.

I've been leveling up a NPC and 2 days ago she reached Deadly, until that moment EDO had shown her progress correctly. Now the GUI just shows Deadly at 100% (never restarted from 0%), so I have no idea how far she is from Elite or if she is even progressing anymore. Still a powerful ally to have in a SLF! This isn't new to update 9, it was already in 8.

Shipyard won't open at stations where I have ships stored. Just spins the wheel and then goes back to the main menu. Works fine at stations where I have nothing stored. Going to try having a ship ferried over to see if that makes a difference.

So it could be likely that RX 7000 or 8000 GPUs will perform vastly better due to the likelyhood of better memory - GPU core connection (much faster if the patent is true) and due to more memory in general?
I am about to make some unreasonable financial decisions I guess

Can totally appreciate this.
I've escalated all of the issues I've collected on this and the team are aware.
Just uh...well...things really are suddenly a bit choppy around here for some reason. Bear with o7
Hi Sally, could you add a boilerplate shortlist, of the known issues you're tracking with this update, at the bottom of some/all of your future messages in this thread?

I'm thinking something along the lines of the recent additions to the bottom of certain CM communications and the community schedule where it states something like:

Here are the issues we're tracking:
  1. Issue 1
  2. Issue 2
  3. etc...
I mean, if this is a good idea...

@sallymorganmoore - I hate to do this as I don't like pestering people for stuff like this, but any chance the shadow toggling bug could get some attention pretty please with a cherry on top?

It's been present since the release of Odyssey (issue tracker re-post is here: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/42913 ), I keep checking after each update with the hope it is fixed so I can resume exploring without shadows flickering in and out of existence (sometimes quicker, sometimes slower) and sadly it's still there.

I think it's become quite clear that FDev has to fix the code, and that it won't help much (if at all) to throw hardware at the performance problems..
if only hardware would fix the problem
as I said before rx5700XT and 8700k yet performance still bad at least where it matters

If you have 8GiB or more VRAM, adding more probably won't help. In my opinion and experience, 3-4 is too little for a good experience, six is fine for middling settings, and eight or more makes capacity, in and of itself, generally a non-issue.

The current game still has some CPU utilization issues, but on the GPU side is pretty well balanced and no longer has a major architectural bias toward Ampere (prior to update 8 my 3080 had a major edge in concourses because of the excessive shading going on in concourses and GA102's extreme shader count, but this is no longer the case). So, just buying performance is going to get you performance, if you can overcome that CPU limitation (or throw so much eye candy at things that you bury it in a GPU bottleneck).

wait didnt RDNA have more shader cores tho? I mean AMD always had more shader cores. Nvidia had the fancier core architecture tho.

Nvm

But we talking 4 times performance in raw calc power with next AMD gen
similar with Nvidia soooo
that plus infinity cache might be just enough to run EDO

Thats ok, but if my teammate own the SRV, and deploy. You think i can drive it? And the owner can sit in the gunner role than?
Until I know further I'm assuming it works like the Scarab, and that would mean that a someone in a wing/team can drive another wingmate's SRV.

I'm rather disappointed. I'm still having the same old 20 FPS on concourses with stuttering sound. Considering that we're 9 updates into the odyssey release now, I guess this is how it will stay.
For the record: GTX1650, quite lame I know, but it's all I can/want to afford at this time.
rtx 1650, 7700K, 16gb, ssd. settings mid/low - at stations 50+, settlements 40+ fps. Smoothing still does not look good but a little better with the 9th update. fps compared to the last one really added 10-20%. There is no jerking when flying into the station. progress is evident. compared to when i started in update 7, now is much better

Fire group settings have been deleted with update 9. Setting them again does not work because the fire group setting menue does not respond.
After game relog it works once, but leaving the menue and open it locks again. Looking at the issue tracker a very common issue for a lot of CMDRs.

How come, something like this is not found in basic testing? Is it, because the features are all rushed out every time? Is the code base that chaotic? There seems to be something fundamentally wrong in the development process.

Hmm, I wonder if anyone else sees something similar.

I've been massacring/killing pirates with my turret boat type-10 and SLF. Many times the pirates are shooting at me, but aren't detected as enemies (don't turn red) so that the turrets don't auto fire. Also when I send the SLF to attack my target many times they don't show up as enemies (in red), to my turrets won't start firing.. At the moment I'm in EDO and this was working fine the last few days.
Yeah been doing the same and after the update the turrets don't auto fire even on reds. The enemies don't always turn hostile. I got hammered and died within a few mins in a low res. I saw that corrosive icon lit up too.
