Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

The rest of my SC videos got with a lot of cool insight upon another mechanic SC excells at and it's mostly neglected or even inexistent in most space sims. EVA action. Which Kate and the Skunks still going about their training, EVA action realy does add another layer of gameplay that suits all kinds of gameplay and opens up many gameplay options from boarding to salvaging stuff from wrecks.

Kate surely is making the most of that honey moon.

The x-mas skin for the mustang looks sweet next to this icy moon.

All that detail realy helps conveying a great sense of scale.

I love the shot around 20 seconds in this video, just hanging next to the ship looking over Yela, what a view, it is a great sense of scale. :)

Perhaps he expects all of us to conveniently park in front of the overhyped, oversold and overpriced space-phallus? 🤭

Great ship for pad strafing newbies...but I wouldn't want to be stuck inside an Ares if someone flying a Buccaneer isn't already parked up just waiting to be shot at ;)

Ion is great for grinding PVE bounties once you get up to the bigger ships. Pretty sure it still will be after the "nerf".

Does self destruct still work?
I would always rather pirates get nothing. It's not like they are not going kill me and blow my ship up when they are done. If I could kill some of them while I'm at it, that would be great.

Heh, love the tip about friending everyone you meet so when you join you can look for low pop servers.

Just like traditional development cycles that average 5-7 years for many AAA games, most people have also gotten the false belief that their Alpha and early access experiences on other games apply to all games regardless of the scope or development model. They are finding out that's not the case. There's a reason no studio is willing to develop a product with a similar scope as SC even though people are willing to throw thousands of dollars on such a product.

But but but other games... take 5-7 years to release. SC is still years from release.

And if CIG had said that from the start, or even in 2014 after most of the major stretch goals were in, they'd have much less of a PR issue currently.
Instead, they told people to expect the game in early 2015, then told people it'd be late 2015, and that they'd have both games done by late 2016, etc.
It's CIG that has consistently countered the notion of this game being extremely far from release at every turn, releasing polished trailers and telling people how much fun XYZ new features are, without sharing a lot of information about why certain things aren't actually playable in their current state.
So overall, they bear responsibility for the expectations they set. They kept telling people that things were very far along, on both games, and so people expect them now to be farther along at this point.

And that is the crux of it. Expectations management. CIG suck at it.

Yes, self destruct works and if another ship is close enough it will blow up too.

However, in SC there are plenty of people who do "legit" piracy.

This is funny and also connects with 2 points i've made for years in relation to ED.

The first is about all those times people have said combat logging in ED is the fault of FD because of the P2P (actually hybrid) network model they have and not Client/Server. I've tried to point out C/S isn't a cure by itself and you can have ships persist even when someone logs out with both FDs and a C/S model. But it requires someone to actually add the code to make it happen. With FD's Hybrid P2P you have to have a module on a server that will take over any disconnected ships. You can't trust a client... well, you could, but that would be exploitable.

The second is covered in the comments.

I appreciate that guys like in the video are taking the steps to be good pirates but all it takes is one bad experience to leave a bad taste in your mouth about being forcefully stopped like in the video. If beacons worked, the way they should, and you can call for aide like ECNs I could see stops like this being more organic but then again help most likely be too far away to help you before you are boarded and, possibly, killed.

This is the problem. You never know if a pirate is going to just try and pirate you or gank you. And some will just gank. If pirated you lose some time and money, but it can be a fun and positive experience. But getting killed is going to leave a bad taste. You've been a good sport, you hung around after you ship was disabled, you're ready to be pirated... and boom. You lose time, money, and have a bad experience. And once you've experienced that a couple of times, the next time you will be tempted to just quit, because you don't want to wait around for what's coming. Might as well get back into the game on a different server (because CIG can't implement a single shared verse) and continue with your game.

And even if there is proper persistence and logging off doesn't despawn your ship, then the "pirates" can continue robbing your ship on another server, while you get on with playing on a different server. That way you lose less time, even if you lose the money. Why hang around for someone to kill you?

There is little you can do in the way of protection against this stuff happening unless you travel with others in combat ships for protection. If you are alone, well, you're boned. Again bringing us back to another topic we've discussed in the past, is there room in SC for the solo player? Will you always be able to find people to provide escort when you are trading?

Bed Logging or pull the ####'ing Ethernet cable out... this needs fixing.

These guys successfully pulled him out of quantum and disabled his ship, they were getting ready to board him when he logged out, i don't know if he bed logged or just Alt + F4, he had enough time to get to the bed before he disappeared, if so when he logs back in he will spawn in his ship bed with his cargo intact, if Alt + F4 he will lose everything.

Either way we are able to interdict and disable player ships for boarding, there needs to be a way to stop people from just logging out or if they do the ship persists.

The Original.

You can never stop people leaving a game. What you can do is implement persistence of objects upon quitting.

As i just said, if CIG can do that (ETA: 2035) then it still makes sense to quit assuming you think its going to be a gank at the end, because you're going to lose everything anyway, so might as well just get on with playing the game on another server while the "pirates" do whatever they want to do. Its all lost anyway.

In a shock move, almost all the remaining gameplay slated for 3.16 just got shunted...

3.16 has just gotta win the 'stuntiest quarterly update' award.

EDIT: For comparison, originally it had:

700 people....

CIG at least does something about it.

When prison was first introduced, people would combat log on player bounty hunters to avoid going to prison.

If you combat log on a bounty hunter now, you still go to prison when you log back in. Or if you combat log on npc security, same thing, you still go to prison.

And then you just remain logged off and not playing the game until the timer expires. Good gameplay CIG!

Ah so that's where it's from, quite intense flying in there, seems almost speed up, kinda makes Elite's flight model look like flying through molasses.

Wow! I'm giving you a like because you actually managed to write a post without mentioning ED! Amazing!
