Indeed, there is only one 'Elite', others have tried to mimic and not succeeded.

Don't mess with the best - some of us older folks have waited 30 years for - Elite Dangerous!!

So.... after seeing a thread where everyone (EVERYONE) pretty much said they wouldn't pay a subscription fee. You create a poll asking if people would be interested in a mode where they paid the subscription fee?

Permission to giggle?

You mean apart from the ones that said yes? Also, there was a comment in there asking why the original thread hadn't been made into a poll in the first place. OP is just responding to that.

Note when you say "everyone (EVERYONE) pretty much said they wouldn't' then you might find that not everyone (EVERYONE) actually said no to it so you just doubled up on the everyone for no reason.

I voted yes providing it was optional and did not affect the ability to play in any other mode as per what the OP has said.

If I thought it would help FD then I might consider a subscription even though I hate subscriptions. FD aren't stupid though and they went for a p2p model as anybody with industry experience can tell you that a true MMO on this scale is about as far from possible as you can get.

Maths time. Assume each zone server can handle 5000 systems (an absurd number as it would be much lower). With just 400 million systems that is 80,000 zone servers needed. Assume £50 rent per server each month (again and absurd number) and you have a monthly cost of £4,000,000 just to keep the lights on. Now scale that up to 400 BILLION systems and factor in real dedicated server hosting prices and server speeds.

Now assume there are 100,000 players paying for the game that leaves you £40 per month for your sub. The real cost would actually be far higher.

Allow me to correct this a little.

The game is currently designed so that you (the player) are the instance, not a region of space. Taking on that model then the hosting server would become the owner of the island groups and therefore you wouldn't need as many servers as you think. If a typical high end server could host 5K players simultaneously then perhaps you would load them up to 3K to allow friends / groups to migrate together. If the number of players online (via subscription model) was 100K players then you would need 20 servers to host them all with some spare for HA / player migration. That's considerably cheaper than £4 million / month :)

The main cost for running an MMO comes from staff costs, not the BW / Servers ... you can buy leased lines for not that much : 100Mb costs £390pm so a 1Gb line wouldn't be far off.

Re the OP : If FD can nail the P2P model then the topic is moot, but if they couldn't and a subscription / netcode change was required I would have to speak to FD about a special arrangement for my wife and I. I did ask FD repeatedly during the KS campaign about this and was told no which was why I upped my pledge somewhat. (I estimated the cost for a 10 years subscription * 2 and added that to my pledge )

The total number of systems is not relevant.

There is no point to have servers containing billions of systems without any players in it.

The number of players and how they are spread out over systems are the variables on which the math should be based.

It becomes more and more evident that ppl who want a Space Sim w/ MMO features, such as guilds and competitive PvP, have to migrate to Star Citizen which is tailor-made for that.

Well I did say 'pretty much' since there was a small minority (of which I quickly gathered you were one), the poll is pretty much confirming that. It ain't 50/50.

Elite has been, from the beginning, a single player game with co-operative game play. It has been raked over, pummeled, beaten, argued about, polled over, flamed about and the outcome is always the same. Elite is not other games.

This is to be a game about a single pilot (you) blazing your own way across space. No guilds, no player owned sections of space, no groups of people blocking of other players getting to where they want to go. That was Eve. If that is what you want, feel free to return there. If you want more control over massive capitol ships and their battles, first person combat, and super "bling" ships, Star Citizen may be your best bet.

If you want to play a Space sim where you don't have to play based on someone else's schedule, welcome to Elite and enjoy your stay.

I have been waiting for this game for 30 years. There was nothing like the original then, and there is nothing like the new one now. I get to do what I want, how I want, WHEN I want, and experience it exactly how I feel it should be.

And the sad part is that all over the forum the 'mmo/pvp/everyonemustbeforcedtoplaymultiplayerorelse' people really think they are the majority.
NO!

Let's see how this poll goes when more people have voted. Up to now it's 65 vs. 11 vs. 1 (so 84% against subscription and MMO). And I think the result later may be more or less the same.

I was describing the imagined setup if the game had true MMO features and full realtime persistence everywhere at once like most MMOs. FD went for the p2p model for the reasons you list and it makes perfect sense logically and financially which is why I don't think we need a subscription class if FD are offering most of what OP wants already (and have not yet finished).

Let FD release the game first as they have their idea to deliver and we haven't seen their finished version yet. I just know they are keeping the best stuff back for the release, so patience Commanders. You can Pillory them if they fail and then we can all pay subs to keep the game alive if they need our help that badly ;)

not another Subscription thread, how many moderators does it take to merge this thread into all the previous " should elite have a subscription" threads.
