Can I play with a Nvidia GT 1030 2GB DDR5 graphics card?

Hi,
I would like to know if I can play Elite: Dangerous with a Nvidia GT 1030 2GB DDR5 graphics card.
When Elite came out I could not run it on my old PC, but now I have build a new one with a R5 5600X.
Alas, only a GT1030 2GB was availlable without spending an unreasonable amount.
Hopefully it will become better soon.

So, can I play using this and if so, is it good enough or just above terrible?

Space stuff its OK, you'll sacrifice about 20% compared to Horizons.

On foot? Its an inconsistent mess. Concourses start well at 30fps but I think the VRAM gets choked to death (since its not enough) and things rapidly go to low double digits and sometimes lower :(

Bases are a bit better, but its still verrrryyyyyy sllloooowww.

In short, no. Maybe U10 might be the one, but until then you can sit next to me and cry as our GT 1030 children struggle at Odyssey school.

The poster didn't mention whether they were looking at the base game or EDO.

How would it go with just the base game (my son has a similar spec).

Edit : I mean the base game as it is now including horizons.

I have not bought any game yet, but I plan to get the base game, that would now include Horizons, if I am correct.
I used to play it in the past on the ZX-Spectrum and later on PC Frontier.

Base game should work fine (it works on even massively below spec PC's provided they support DX11)

Horizons should work ok at lower settings but don't expect too much from it.

Oddy will probably be a slideshow.

On my PC, E1650, 16Gb ram, GT 1030 and an old HDD @2560 x 1080p (@ 0.60 / 0.85 scaling) its nice, this with a mix of low and a few other tweaks. You just have to lose the eye candy for framerate, which is between 30 -45 in station and 45 -70 in space.

Do you think it is worth it to get the game, when I only have a GT1030?
I just looked at the cards available, it is insane what the prices are, so I am not going to buy another card right now.
Perhaps when Intel brings their cards to the market, I will get one of those,if affordable.

Horizons is very playable with the card, EDO at the present time: no its not worth it.

You may have wished to look at the second hand market for slightly older cards. Generally 9th gen ones can go quite cheap (I've seen £160 for a GTX 970 on eBay) if you are on a tight budget and would outpace anything a GT1030 can push.

Thanks for your suggestion. I am not very charmed of buying 2nd hand though.
If there was any decent card for € 200 -250 I'd get it.

One more question:
My friend said he did not want to play because he had heard there was something of an in-game shop where you can buy stuff with real-world money, but I can't find any of that.
Is there real-world money involved, other than buying the game? ( I would prefer not.)

There is, but it's only cosmetics.

Absolutely NO pay-2-Win, Frontier have not gone down that route. The ONLY 'shop' needing real money is for cosmetics/ paint jobs etc... entirely optional. To use this 'shop' you buy 'ARX' which are Frontiers 'exchange' currency. (Don't bother with it as it is just eye candy)
