just bought the game and for starters the game refuses to start in full screen, then it takes me to to character creation and the cursor for the mouse highlights options but nothing happens when I click. keyboard doesnt respond either and I cant figure out whats the issue. I bought the game on steam so I dont know if there is some kind of issue with that version. Has anyone come across this issue and what can I do to fix it?

Navigation keys are usually a, w, s, d and the select (enter) key is the space bar. In some menus the mouse does not work like a mouse and you have to use the navigation keys. In some menus you also need to use the q and e to navigate.

Top right of the launcher is a link to (a rather old, bit still mostly valid) the game manual.

Horizons or Odyssey?
In Horizons when I start a new CMDR it still takes me to the tutorial - have you completed that? And there is no character creation other than giving a name, so I'm not sure where you are stuck. Just been through the whole process and it seems to be working ok. I believe the Odyssey tutorial breaks at the end, but that isn't what you describe.
CMDR names are globally unique, so maybe you're picking one that is already taken?
this is what I am getting, in horizons the game opens in window mode and even though i have a mouse courser i can move and highlight options, nothing happens when I click on anything. same thing happens when I open oddysee, I get no response from pressing any keys on keyboard and cannot click on anything.

ok for those of you who tried to help......thanx, but i think im just going to request a refund, the game just simply wont let me play because i get no response from mouse or keyboard and i have spent hours trying to get it to work and i cant find any kind of help online to figure out what the issue is.
I just got the game, never played it once so I havent had any time to bind anything and I also don't have a joystick. This is all happening from the moment of purchase
It looks like you might have an old version of the game, which is strange since you got it from Steam. The version on mine currently shows 4. something, whilst your screenshot shows 3.8.402.
Also, the space bar is often used to select menu items rather than the Reurn/Enter key, so try that to select something.

anyone would think the base code was written by some old codger who's hayday was the 80's and on account most people are right handed for ease of access b4 game pads etc existed
when WASD and spacebar were used to navigate on the first pc game s ever written as default controls
(original pc DOOM for eg) (of course you could re bind them to whatever after and then save) me rebinding movement to the arrow keys being a southpaw on a mouse to aim)

Ok, I'm daft, confused by the "Odyssey Compatability" in the version.
gota get the game working in full screen mode 1st (an incorrect version will not connect(allow any play or character creation at all so that's ruled out) (the fact you get to avatar creation in the first place tells me all game files are more than likely present and correct and you are connected)
you say it refuses why?
R U running a laptop?
is your graphics card driver updated to the latest version using it's installer packages clean install option if available
is the gpu above the min spec req?
