Well it is, really. It has a baseline of players that after the dizzying highs before the release its dropped to, so while EDO pretty much wasted fantastic hype and potential the game has not killed this level of players (yet).
The real test will come if / when consoles / low spec PCs are cut out, or if / when Horizons merges and disrupts this core playerbase.
The game is only doomed when Frontier say it is doomed (though they have got form).
It can be fixed, shame fdev don't seem to play the game properly. If they did, they would feel the gaps.

I currently have to resort to sticking to EDH as my laptop isn't powerful enough to run EDO in an enjoyable way. It'll be interesting what will happen when (or if) they merge clients. Thankfully my home desktop can run it adequately (but not as well as I'd expect it to, based on other, prettier games and sims I own).
If I didn't have that PC though: While I'm a long term Elite nerd I wouldn't upgrade my machine just for EDO (because of what it adds, or rather doesn't add to Elite), and even if EDH remained on the old client I would probably slowly wane myself off it due to lack of ship specific content getting added to that (the only route to more stuff is via EDO like it or not).
