Hotas Bindings

Any Commanders out there experiencing problems with their Hotas bindings since the 9.1 update?

I have the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X, this is the third one that I have purchased and they have all worked great for 5/6 years with Elite, but since the 9.1 update I can't seem to get the Thruster or Throttle controls to work right or accept my bindings for when I fire up the game the next time and they sometimes lose their bindings even when I back them up into another folder on a different hard drive on my PC, I am totally at a heavy scratching head phase in playing this game, it's driving me NUTS! Please, if anyone out there can help it would be very much appreciated. I spend most of my time working from my Fleet Carrier in my heavily engineered Imperial Cutter with 512 ton of cargo space.

ISTR that (somewhere on this subforum) someone had a similar problem with the Hoats X (I have none with my setup, but I'm using Virpils). A suggested source was not the EDupdate, but a closely timed Windows update. I don't recall the suggested solution, thoough - but if you scan through the last week's threads in this subforum, oyu should find it (hopefully).

I don't think that bindings stored on another drive\elsewhere will be overwritten (mine are ok from as far back as 2014)
but what may happen is as soon as you put them back in the correct dir and start the game with one of you usual controllers disconnected or not detected by windows
it will then overwrite the file corrupting it also that's why my guide says copy and paste\replace the folder back in ( so you don't save or backup a corrupt bind file as remember it may overwrite if devices have shoddy detection undervoltage and not detected by windows or simply unplugged
see this guide https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...-free-backed-up-binds-look-no-further.554451/
now say if FD add an extra keybind in a patch for say clearing the id scanner this extra control may then require your current binds be slightly adjusted as you may find a bind or two now don't work but the rest are fine because of this new control addition which don't happen often but it does occasionally happen.

My Thrustmaster Hotas X works fine on other games like MSFS but no flight joystick control on Elite Dangerous Horizons no matter what I set in options. Fleet Carrier countdown showing 30 minutes to jump now, used to be 15 minutes (I think) 7A multi collectors are a total waste of time, better sticking with the standard collectors. Impossible Material collecting mechanics especially for Asteroid mining. Earned 32 Billion credits in my 5 years playing, but nothing to spend the credits on, I have every ship, all fully engineered etc. So I am heading back to Skeggico to sell my Fleet Carrier and put everything into moth balls for at least 3 months or more, and I'm just going to wait and see if Frontier can possibly get their act together, and fix this brilliant game, if it can be fixed. If not, then the only course of action is to uninstall and try another different Space game. It was fun while it lasted and when it worked it was great, but now Not fun at all! Constant frustration, year after year!

At least for PC's, It looks like with the last update, Fdev is now automatically creating ".backup" binds for every user.

I believe these ".backup" binds are being created with each new update, in case the previous binds are overwritten.

If you check your bindings folder, located at "C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings" you will see several new files along with your active bindings. For me, these are:

Custom.3.0.binds (EDH active binding)
Custom.3.0.binds.123456789.backup (EDH backup)
StartPreset.start (EDH Start File)
Custom.4.0.binds (EDO active binding)
Custom.4.0.binds.123456789.backup (EDO backup)
StartPreset.4.start (EDO Start File)

So, it looks like FDev is trying to solve the problem, leaving it up to the user to rename the ".backup" back to your EDH/EDO active binding should your active binding be overwritten by an update.

In any event, you should make a copy of the bindings directory and store it elsewhere on your storage device, as well as make backup copies after each update.

Just thought I would point this out.

Fly Safe and enjoy the new year.

Are you sure it is Elite making those backups? I have seen people post that sort of file structure for yonks - I supposed it to be something OS wise. My PC has none of those kind of files created as backups (mind you I don't use "custom" - that is just begging for issues).

The good thing that E D have done is introduce the separate "start" files for the two game versions. Now if they could just figure out how to code a "save as" button in Options / Controls screen(s) that would be great (over 7 years and they have still not found anyone that can do it).

Thanks for that, I wondered what this backup file in my bindings folder was, I used to copy my own backup bindings to the Elite bindings folder and delete this backup as I thought it had something to do with a crash or file corruption.

The only other software I am aware of that would modify elite's binding directory is VoiceAttack's Customizer.

The only thing VA's customizer will do is place a bind file in that directory for your controller from a preset list and warn you if certain bind fields are blank or missing, with an error list placed there.

So, I checked with VA and HCS and those are not their files.

I believe ED updates are making those files due to complaints by players of wiped bindings after updates. As well, FDev seems to be separating bindings for EDH and EDO with two version files, i.e. 3.0 and 4.0 as well as a start file and binding backup for both.

Paul, I think that has been happening previously, I think I had bindings files for 2.4 (old HD), 3.0 and now 4. I didn't create them afaik.

I think?

The binds files have always been numbered according to the game version. So when in the past we loaded Horizons for the first time it took our ".2.0.binds" file and copied it to a new file called ".3.0.binds" (with added entries for the new controls in that version). The same thing happened with Oddity it took the ".3.0.binds" file and wrote a ".4.0.binds" file with the new stuff too.

Here for example is an image of an old binds archive on my machine (pre Horizons) - you can see the version numbers. Note that there are no automatically created copies, all "copies" were edited (named) by me:

old binds.jpg (The red blocks hide a rude word, sorry.)

So unless it is the use of "custom" files that makes Elite create backups, I have no idea where those backups you show come from, there is nothing like that on my machine.

My current binds directory even has Elite-created "custom" files of both versions (as it made them when things mucked-up from time to time) and you see no files anything like the backups you have:

I don't use Voice Attack although it is installed, just not activated in EDH, the error file is definately created by Frontier. Binding backups I make my self and copy to the Frontier Bindings folder every time I launch the game if I don't do this the bindings for my Thrusters and sometimes my direction controls dissappear.
