Newbie trouble.

Hi guys,
I downloaded ED yesterday because they told me it was great in VR.
Wel I did and it looks great but that was it.
I got in a training mission and need to push "auto launch"?????
How can you push this?
I tried every key on my keyboard, every button on my hotas and nothing works. The mouse isn't working in the game?
What am I supposed to do?

Greetings,
Z

Space Bar would be the default IIRC. Worth checking your keybinds, or even looking at the ones in the (out of date) manual available via the link on the launcher - pressing random keys is probably not gonna get you too far in this game :)

You are right.... pressing random keys generally results in a lot of flashing lights, klaxons and my ship going BBBOOOOOOMMM.

Isn't the second option on the station menu, but that is assuming you have gotten the upgraded Advanced Docking Computer so it can auto-launch.

In options at the main menu there's the chance to bind your hotas to whatever keys you want within certain constraints.
For example, one of my throttle hats controls forwards back slide left slide right on foot only. Along with mouse for mouse look fire jump etc. In vr it works quite well seen as I'm left handed ✋
But for you.
Itll be bound to your personal like. Took me 2 weeks to get it to how l wanted it.

Get used to the idea that the mouse does not work in the cockpit - confused the buttocks off of me when I first started nearly 6 years ago.

Interaction in the main is via UI Focus controls the defaults are:

You can also bind buttons on your controls to carry out these functions. Depending on what HOTAS you are using, you might find a useful way to print-out your controls using the EDRefCard website.

Welcome, have fun, it is a great game but has a steep leaning curve.

I think I got the worst version, the one that doesn't work. Tried a lot of the tips and noting works. If I look to bindings than there is no "auto launch" so the space bar has no function??

You select auto launch by moving the highlighted part of the interface panel down to "auto launch" (use the "S" key by default) - then press the space bar to select (activate) that action. There is no binding for launch (or dock) just select the highlighted function.

What highlighted?
I have a VR goggle and I see in blue "select auto launch to begin" but I can't select anything?

I would just say on a scale of 1 to 10 in relation to how easy/intuitive it is to set up game controls (or even use the default settings, as i've got stuck in the FSS just the other day and the on screen 'tip' did not show the ' key as being used to get 'out' of FSS (even if you use it to activate it), ED is absolutely a 10. My mind boggles just digging into the control settings and the game manual is sparse on detail.

Sure it is a complex game, but my goodness that 'controls' option fills your heart with dread ;) So in short i feel your pain and hopefully some of the suggestion here help, it should be 'space' bar as the general 'action' button when in the menu's (WASD type keys for moving around the menu's etc). In VR do you have a known 'action' button, if 'space bar' is not working for you?

More to the point, why isn't your mouse working? That's on by default. Never had my mouse not working...ever

I do not know, I opened the game in vr and I has no mouse function? So I closed the game and opened it in screen function and even then the mouse isn't working?

Well I do not know. But I only can use the mouse in the start menu and that is it when the game starts, no mouse. When I escape the game the mouse is working and I can navigate through the menu?

1. Don't Panic
2. Slow Down, take a deep breath and supply us with a few more details

for example:
  • which VR headset are you using (i.e. mainly Oculus or WMR)?
  • which game version/launcher are you using - there's Steam, Epic and FD direct, and all of them have different VR options

If you can only see "select auto launch to begin" and not the ship's cockpit, then there's something seriously wrong with your graphics setup - a screenshot (F10 triggers ED's screenshot function - and no, that one button is not reassignable) would be very helpful. And yes, screenshots also work in VR - you'll get the view from the left eye for that one.

Mouse - as said before, the mouse works in the game, just not in the way you seem to expect. Mouse is ship control and/or headlook (if you've configured the controls for kb&m, not the best choice in VR). In order to move the cursor (highlight) across the cockpit functions, you use (per default) WASD (and a few more keys), with space bar for select.

Usually, in order to get the ship to auto launch, you would therefore press S-S-space (i.e. down, down, select). But as I said above, kb&m is proabably the worst choice of input devices for VR, even a gamepad would be better (if you don't have a HOTAS with enough buttons).

Well I'm using VR HP G2 and the Warthog hotas and throttle. Also I have a steering wheel with pedals installed but I do not know if the game bind buttons to this? I now find out that the button by my thumb can navigate to the auto launch. 😅
Now I got stuck again because of the "yaw" can't find button "U" or do they mean on the keyboard? If that's the case then how do I find this button with my goggles on?

1. If you cannot see in the image I posted that Starport Services is highlighted then you have issues. I even put red arrows to show you where you have to move the highlight down to and then press space bar.

2. I specifically told you that the mouse doesn't get used in the cockpit view, you have to use the focus keys to move, highlight and select. I even posted the image from the manual detailing the default assignments for this.

Seriously, if you cannot comprehend these simple instructions / tips then you probably should ask for a refund.

I would be inclined to do a few hours in 2d, get the hang of the buttons first, then put your headset on and marvel at the immensity of our galaxy! Don’t give up though mate, it’s really reallly really worth the effort and frustration.

So you're using SteamVR and a similar setup to me (Virpil HOSAS). OK, your biggest problem will be the bindings - I think there's a predefined binding for the Warthog HOTAS, and it seems you're using it (as otherwise the game wouldn't know how to handle the buttons).
As for the wheel/pedals - ED can make use of anything you can connect to a USB port. At least one CMDR wrote about using a 6 DOF space mouse (if you've seen The Expanse - that thingy was used at least in the first two series to steer the Rocinante ;)). "All" you need to do is to define bindings for it.

Before you start this, I seriously recommend you read the thread stickied at the top of this subforum - it'll save you a lot of grief later on. Then check out https://edrefcard.info/ . They have stored a bunch of bindings, and can give you a graphical reference card for the more common setups (like the Warthog HOTAS). But warthog plus pedals is pretty common, as the warthog doesn't support twist. Wheel could be good for the SRV (surface vehicle) - and yes, the SRV has a partially independent set of bindings.

For the start, you could just go to EDRefcard and get the reference card for your bindings.
