Help, Cannot complete Odyssey reactivation mission, 5-10 NPCs show up at the same time I do and kill me before I reach the front gate

I have many hours in ED and Horizons, but I am finally trying to get into the Odyssey part of the game. The tutorial seemed like a lot of fun and I'm excited to start.

I have watched a few YouTube videos and they always arrive to an empty compound to enter the building and complete the mission before the bad guys show up at the end.
That is not the case for me. I land outside the compound and two dropships drop off 5-10 guys before I reach the front gate. I've been killed this way 5 times in a row. (I'm not the best with FPS combat)

Am I doing something wrong? Id like to gain some money doing these missions and grabbing a few items while I'm there. But with starting weapons and little experience, they're unbeatable.

Thanks for any help you can offer. Apologies in advance if it's something easy that I am doing very wrong.

It sounds like you are setting off the settlement alarms, which will result in a call for reinforcements, which can easily swamp you with hostiles.

Get to the alarm control panel without being spotted, or at least without allowing anyone that spots your CMDR to live long, and you should be able to shut off their ability to call for help.

Could flying too close with my ship cause that? Should I land much farther away and walk or SRV closer?

Flying too close could trigger a tresspass alarm, yes. However, you are warned of this and generally have to be very close.

Being wanted/hostile and then scanned by other ships will also set off settlement alarms.

If you are talking about the missions to restore power from a faction at stations, there does seem to be a pattern to them.

Once you have taken the mission and leave the station, you should get a message warning you that scavengers have been seen in the area, and adds a sweetener to the contract if you kill them. I go to the base in the mission, but do not land. After about 20 seconds, two ships appear and drop a number of scavengers off. The easiest way to deal with them is from your ship, while in the air. Use dumb fire missiles to kill them. If you cannot get them all before they scatter, I switch on my external lights, which makes the highly aggressive, and they will shoot at your ship, making them easy to locate. Send them a warm dumb fire as a thank you.

If the mission has followed the pattern I outlined above, you should get a message in the top right of your screen saying the scavenger sub mission is complete. At this point it is safe to land. I would recommend you use your SRV to get around the base, as you get some protection when in it, and you can drop off your surplus goodies. When you leave a building, be mindful that more scavengers may have landed (it happens I would guess at one in ten missions), have your weapon drawn, and be ready to turn on your shields. If you retreat back into the building, you can recharge your shields and energy levels, and do better in the fight.

Reactivations are easy, no worries about alarms.

Have dumbfires fitted to your ship (easy mode)

When you arrive, get close in your ship and check for any scavenger on the ground. If not, wait a minute to see if any scavs arrive via dropship. Sometimes there can be multiple waves, always look at the top right for any kill counter to make sure you have got all of them the game plans on throwing at you.

With landing scavs, don't shoot the ships, they will not attack you, only the scavs who land.

When they are dead (of if none appear) only then land. At deactivated bases you can do whatever illegal stuff you want, no alarms will be raised.

Request docking permission (yeah, strange that works at an offline site, although if only small pads avaialable then you'll have to manually land if in medium or bigger ship).

Get to the power plant first and get the power online. As long as the power is offline there is a random chance of more scavs turning up. Usually after the first batch it will be a while.

Once power is on you have all the time in the world.

Sometimes you get missions where you have to reactivate the power to get something from a data port but you have to supply your own power regulator and you'll want that back after the mission is over, and so you take the power offline.

Be warned, the moment the power goes offline new scavs can arrive, often they spawn the second the power goes offline. So when taking power offline, always get back to your ship quickly unless you want a fight. Also, if the scavs don't see you, then they will go for your ship and shoot that instead or your SRV if you are using it.

Ok, here's the deal. Sure, you can nuke them from your ship with dumbfires, or get in your SRV and try to take them out long range, but you'll never get better at ground combat like that, and you won't feel much like a warrior. I did it a few times at the beginning, but it's not much fun.

So here's my advice for a newcomer to these missions.

1) Get some pre-upgraded gear. G3 suits and weapons are easy to find if you go looking. Having at least a G3 suit will help your survivability. See thread here --> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/the-great-pre-upgraded-gear-sharing-is-caring-thread.576352/

2) When you arrive at the settlement in your ship, come in low and fast and land about 400m out, no closer than that, out past the landing pad is a good spot so you have a clear view of the settlement

3) When the dropships arrive, let them discharge the scavs and wait a bit until they settle. Use the camera suite to get a look at where they are.

4) Disembark and approach the settlement, keeping buildings between you and where the scavs are. Line of sight is very important, and the NPCs cannot see through buildings and containers and other cover. Stay behind cover.

5) When you get in range the NPCs will start to appear on your radar. This helps you locate them, and discern their patterns.

6) Turn on your shields before combat. They are OFF by default.

7) Never get caught in the open, and never engage more than 1 NPC at a time (until you have upgraded gear, anyway). Sneak around to get behind, and pick them off one by one. When you get a kill, run away again, staying behind stuff until you lose your pursuers.

8) If you can stay out of sight for a minute they lose track of you and go into search patterns. This is your opportunity to circle around and find one off by himself.

9) You can run back to your ship at any time to recharge/resupply. As long as it's at least 400m out, the scavs will not chase you that far. Circle around as needed to avoid them.

10) NPCs have a hard time hitting moving targets. Never stand still unless behind cover. If your shield goes down for any reason, run away, staying behind stuff, until it's back up.

Pro tip: If it's a restore mission, you only need to locate the PWR building, cut the panel, charge the port, then get inside. Often the scavs are not guarding the PWR building and you can do this stealthily. If they are near it, lure them away or kill them using the above methods.

Once you've restored power the base is open to you. You can run in and out of buildings to escape scavs. They don't have clearance and can't enter so you can pop in and out of a doorway to kill them that way.

If you need practice with your weapons and suits, do a few on-foot conflict zones (low ones at first). This will give you time to experiment and learn how your weapons and suits work, while having a team of NPCs on your side helping out.

These missions are loads of fun once you've figured out the NPCs patterns and how to use cover to your advantage. You'll get bounties and rank, too.

Have fun :)

Thanks so much! Very detailed. Will try tonight and update.

Enjoy the (rather steep) learning curve. I died so much when I started Odyssey foot missions, so don't feel too bad. It's worth the effort, very much so. The missions are involved and interesting.

Meanwhile, check out this excellent guide to stealth. It explains a lot about how guards react, and why, and how to get around without being noticed.

To each their own. For me, nothing beats getting right down there and taking them out myself. It's challenging and exciting. Plus I get to occasionally yeet a scav into the air for laughs.

I get plenty of that anyway with other missions.

Just had to do a data upload where the data port was in a bar. Went to all the trouble of disabling the alarms and whatnot, only to realize there was no way i was going to be able to start the upload covertly. Several NPCs wandering around the bar. So went for broke, started the upload, whole bar spotted me and went hostile, so blam blam blam, new guards coming in, blam blam blam, data upload complete, legged it out of there.

The fun thing in that situation is to start the upload, leg it out of the bar and finish the upload sat on the roof of the bar. You can usually hear the guards trying to work out where you are. if there are stairs you can be found, which is even more fun :)

Decided just to shoot it out. Anarchy settlement so no bounty anyway :D
