Community ship design

People are always asking for new ships. I thought it would be cool if there was a community ship design competition. Have competitions for different ship sizes winners get to name their ships (within reason) and get their names added to the game as contributors. Could also make said ships purchasable with arx for a limited time with a percentage of the proceeds going to the creator. Alternatively you could do a ship skin design competition.

It's almost certain 99% will be thrown out due to IP infringement, I can imagine endless Enterprise Clones, Millennium Falcons, Fireflies, Tie Fighters X-Wings etc, but it woul dbe fun to see the designs players come up with, so why not!

Hmm there IS history here to think about, and still a huge selection of manufacturer specific ships not yet in ED (that we have seen/flown in Elite, Frontier and FFE). I think i prefer Frontier (the company) work on using that already existing and lore-accurate ship catalog.

The 'tyranny of the masses' is good for somethings, but not immersive world-building ship design (with an intended aesthetic to aid in that) imho. I would like to see more incentives to fly and keep the smaller ships though.

Oh no I don't think we should use any, just interested to see what would pop up re: other IP's. Goodness no, all the ships in the game should be FDEV designed ships!

While a competition would be cool, I think the bigger problem isn't designs but actually putting them in the game: making sure they work, look nice, and are balanced against the rest of the game without unbalancing any already existing ships. And this is all on top of all the other priorities that need attention.

As I said, though, a ship design competition would be super cool and I would totally support it, even if the winner won't be implemented in the game.

I kind of got this idea from warframe. They utalize the community to design skins a lot. New skin designs for ships would be nice and give some people the ability to create the skin they always wanted for their ship. I think a skin competition would be great first. As for a ship competition they would likely need to make specifications that would be acceptable in order to keep it both lore driven and on par with designs of manufacturers in game.

The community has already shown they are willing to put in work to help support this game through all the online tools out there that help with the game. Im sure the community would love to help create assets for the game as well.

I like the idea. I am sure there would be some good design talents among the playerbase, and while 99% of the proposals would be just IP infringements, poor but honest attempts, pranks, Dunning-Kruger in ship form or outright rubbish, there would be that little portion of designs that hit the nail on the head and could work as templates or whatever inspiration for new models.
It would be lots of fun checking the entries.

Nope, not really.
Elite is Braben/FDevs baby. Their IP.

They have their own designers that did the ships and they're probably contract bound not to come on the forums or reddit and brag that is my ship, i designed it
Nope, it won't happen

They dont want to get get into any muddy waters regarding legal or technical aspects.
Modding being no-go in any games released by FD could also be a hint

This too. 👆
They have issues with people trying to slip in Minor Factions with references to other IP... Ship design will be an even easier trap to fall for.

I would a larger vette without braindead decision to slap 2 small hardpoints on the nose instead of mediums, and id give it the thrusters it deserves (C8) and its 2 disabled utilities, and a C7 fsd its a huge ship dont tell me it dont got room. Basically id just fix the vette because Fdev wont. Call it Federal Frigate

God I wish modding was allowed. We would have ship interiors and panther clipper by now.

lol, not at a professional scale you wouldn't. all those ships are highly detailed and bone correctly.so no i wouldn't want to open the mod world to elite.

you didnt understand my post and then you didnt read my other response. There is litterally perfect examples out there of how this could work and not have to worry about legal issues.
