Piracy Harpoon/Grappling gun. Slowing a disabled target.

Grappling gun for piracy. disabling engines is all well and good until the target continues on its trajectory. If only there was some way to efficiently slow down a target so you can steal all they own... have some sort of tension mechanic so will have to slow the target slowly.

If we had ship interior, you could affter grappling it board it. And ofc steal it if the player doesnt activate the self destruct system fast enough. But i think if we had that that no one would dare to play in open play

I dont see why not, the pirate would have to be able to slow the enermy while fighting off police if theres a line tension mechanic where the line could snap/break then it would be pretty much impossible underfire or the target having active engines. For boardings theres no reason you carnt have crew boarding the ship sabotaging the ship from the inside. imagine that would have to function like a hatch breaker limpet though.

Or the other way around - the victim with more powerful FSD drive would drag small pirate ship into supercruise/hyperjump and then drop right to the detention center :)

Isn't that what drag munitions do?
They only effect thrust, not inertia. If you shoot out the thrusters on a ship it keeps scooting along. If it is doing faster than the max limpet speed, your poor limpets are going to have a hard time pillaging it. You literally have to get in front of the ships path and bump it to try and slow it down. The whole time hoping your bumping does not destroy your victim, or they don't just self destruct, log out on you, or reboot repair and try to jump away. Piracy is a fairly hard game loop. Maybe difficult is not the right word. Frustrating would likely be a better choice of words. If they don't capitulate and drop their wares, and you have to shoot out their thrusters, chances are pretty high that you are going to get nothing for your efforts.

Great idea, but this won't happen.

This was also suggested years ago, and many many times...

Why? Because it's obvious.

The easy fix would be a flight assist that lets you match speed a ship..or just making the ship stop...

But these things would be unrealistic...tho of course personal shields totally are realistic.

If you want to pirate...just shield tank...

Hit the target a few times ..stop moving...they will eventually stop moving and shoot at you ..

Then take their stuff...

The ai is about as broken as everything else in this game

The irony is a ship without thrusters can outrun / escape a ship with thrusters. If you think about it, what does it really mean to "slow down" in deep space? Maybe your target is stopped and you're drifting too fast backwards for your non-Newtonian thrusters to compensate :p

Not sure if that was exactly the case - but while fighting CZ sometimes when disabled ships are drifting away and you try to kill them with (beam) lasers - it feels like their speed is increasing, which is not happening when you fire multi-cannons. Can someone else confirm?

in some other games we had a Disruptor Missile. get in close hit their engines and they die. its a EMP burst weapon and it fries their electrical system temporarily. makes the ships computer stop dead dragging the ship with it. sort of like the computer stopping the ship for an emergency because the crew all died or something.

If they have no engines how do they slow down? Makes the ships computer stop? You mean the computer makes the ship go?

Sorry that's just babble, seriously it is, makes no sense even in the fantasy world of space travel we employ.

Maybe a optional/utility module along the lines of a tractor beam of sorts, but its extremely weak due to being experimental and ships can easily break out with thrusters, hence its only really useful on ships that cant use thrust.

Make it so it would pull the ship towards you, and only reduce that axis of momentum, so using it 90 degrees from the direction it was drifting would make it go in both directions, and using it when the ship is coming towards you would actually speed the ship up,so positioning and timing are required to make the ship stop properly.

grapple limpet, hooks on and thrusts to slow it down.

No need for new assets or animations. more limpets on faster it slows.

makes as much sense as the ships having a top speed while thrusters are running. some space magic is stopping you from accelerating may as well have space magic that stops a ship with no engines.

Black hole generator from MOO2 would stop... and scoop the target ship.

I like the idea. There is even space for engineering - like max speed for limpets etc.

Instead of adding yet another limpet, the hatch breaker should have some of this effect. Piracy is when you usually need to stop a drifting ship, after all.
