It’s not the game… it’s you.

Greetings commanders!

It has to be said by someone so here it is…. In regard To graphics performance of odyssey and horizons… it’s not the game that is the problem, it’s you and your machine.
My self, I play with 8gigs of ddr, and an nvidia VTX 960. This is old hardware. And the game runs smooth as glass while looking great the whole time in both odyssey and horizons.

I found this video incredibly helpful when it came to setting up odyssey for my monitor and pc combo. Do not just accept the default settings. Look and adjust them your self.

This video is for Horizons, pre-Odyssey which is where the big performance issues come into play. Are you referring Odyssey users to this video or Horizon's users?

Genuinely interested to see what the response is here as if this is true it's solved something the devs have been trying to sort out since launch.

"It's you" in this context would also refer to them, so I'd imagine they'd be delighted to see that someone has, in effect, fixed the game for them.

I can’t even get into these settings if I load up horizons. Only odyssey. My own graphics were pretty bad and for months I was thinking I was going to have to get a new gpu. Then I found this video and went through it step by step…. Turns out my screen resolution did NOT match the resolution that the game was asking for. Just fixing that one thing brought my graphics up to as good or tons better than my ps4 in BOTH horizons and odyssey. The explanations of other functions allowed me to min and max the things important to me and then … wow. ALL was right with the world. Seems my old GPU has some years left at least in regards to elite dangerous.

I don't watch vids by internet randos, posted by internet rando's... so just tell me what you want me to know and I will read it (well probably not, because forums).

You have literally consigned your self to an oblivion of ignorance. You won’t look for answers anywhere unless they are handed to you by an approved person on your list? Have fun with that.

No... I just do this thing where I play the game for myself and work out whether I like it or not... I guess I just don't need someone else to tell me how I feel, I know weird right

Well as a newbie to ED i found this thread handy. The video was fine and the most useful part for me was the text file editing for graphics settings, i'd forgotten we did have some access to files we can edit (just remember to make the file 'read only' when you have finished edits or it will be over-written).

These threads are never useful because there is no context. The performance in Odyssey depends on what you do and where you go. Some people just do Horizons stuff in Odyssey, then say they don't understand what everybody is complaining about. Go do some on-foot conflict zones, then tell us how well your GTX 960 does with your fancy settings.

No lag at all in on foot missions. Now… having said that I am WELL aware of my older hardware so like a normal person that is aware that it’s incumbent on me to upgrade my rig rather than software makers build a game for my specific rig… I have all on foot settings set to low…. And then I tweaked a few things up until I had something that looked good and ran good.

Lots of people have done tests. The main problems with low frame rate have nothing to do with settings. Whether you use low or ultra, there's no difference as long as your GPU has the capability to run ultra.

Barring a few known buggy settings, the difference between low and ultra is significant on most of my systems.

The real problem is that Odyssey is inexplicably and significantly slower when rendering scenes of similar complexity than Horizons is. Using the same settings for everything, and perfectly identical settings for the galaxy map and background, I go to the same area of empty space and look at the sky....Horizons is ~80% faster than Odyssey, even if I can't tell the screenshots apart.
