General Private/Local Servers

I have been a victim in the past. A game I loved dropped its servers one day. I can never play that game again... The developer never prepared the community. Right now, there are a few very enthusiastic folks trying to get a public server up and running for said game but it has been very difficult. They didn't have any of the assets the developers had while running the server. They are literally building it back up from scratch.

To get to the point though, I would like to continue playing this game for years to come. It is an enjoyable escape from reality. I dread the day Frontier says they are shutting down the servers for good. However, I hope they prepare the community with all the assets they need to host a public server or create their own private local servers so the fans can continue to enjoy Elite: Dangerous even after Frontier has moved on.

So, Frontier, this isn't a question but a plea. If you have the time to do so, it would be greatly appreciated to prepare your fan base for the inevitable future when you shutdown Elite's servers for good. We love you guys already. You have made our dreams a reality and we cannot thank you enough for that. You have been very involved with the community since release and it has not gone unnoticed. I don't know what it would entail on your end, but, I'm positive, if you reach out to the community they will probably help the best they can to make this happen.

Anyways, I shall end this now. Regardless of the outcome of this forum post, I just want to say, thank you for everything. o7

They have said they will release the code to allow people to run servers if they decide to shut down. But, who knows what will happen.
Good to know. I searched the forums to see if I could find anything but couldn't except an old thread that didn't give any details. Thanks.

We do plan to take regular archives of the game and the servers, to preserve the game for the future.”

“If it were ever to happen, we would be able to release an archived version of the game, including the servers, but of course this would not evolve any further," Braben said” - David Braben 2014.

*edited: But thats technically not confirmation of anything; it may / may not happen… pop that in Braben’s ‘down the line’ bag, I wouldn’t hold one’s breadth, they are more likely to keep the IP going IMO, it’s one of a number of primary assets and a prominent IP for FD, they are more likely to archive the current IP and re-launch it under a different name / iteration, they do own the IP for ‘Elite Deadly’!

But although that’s technically a public statement of confirmation, it’s not a definitive affirmation of agreement that they can be held too
Thanks for finding that. I'm not sure it's even technically a statement of confirmation, at least not of what the community popularly believes they've said - "we would be able to" isn't the same as "we would", so it's no commitment at all to actually do it, or to do it within ten years of the official server shutdown, or anything else like that.
