The cone should have been permit locked when the surrounding sectors originally were. It was just a mistake. Not quite. This sector is completely closed to commanders. Wouldn't it be much more obvious to simply ask why? What reasons could they possibly have for shutting down an entire sector (not the only one, by the way)? These were the thoughts that were on many players' minds at the time. The fact that this sector is closed is solely on FD's side. And then to simply say "oops, fell in, yummy nix" certainly contributed to some commanders feeling thoroughly alienated.
But a lot of (fairly obvious now) future plans for the game had been built around that sector.
What were they supposed to do?
- Sack off all those plans (and any in-game build up that had already happened)?
- God-hand it, and just lock it with no in-game explanation and just cancel the whole thing (which people had been complaining about as an approach)?
- Try and make a bit of something of it, and build a bit of an in-game event and narrative explanation around it?
