Why the Kiwi would be a great Animal to have in the Game

I usually put the little blue penguin in an Oceania Pack because it's native to both New Zealand and Australia, which means it counts as an animal towards both (in Australia it's known as the fairy penguin, in NZ it's the little blue penguin or korora).
That is a good reason. I wonder if a Shelduck species would be a good bird for Oceania representation. The Australian and New Zealand species are different, but both are visyally striking and commonish in zoo.

And we have a serious need of any waterfowl. I'm at the point where I would buy a pack that's five identical wolf subspecies and a duck just for the duck.

I thought I'd share some Kiwi Funfacts here.

  • the Kiwi is New Zealands National Bird
  • the Kiwi Fruit is named after the Bird. Kiwi isn't the real Name of the Fruit though. New Zealand exported the Fruit which is originating from Asia under the Name Kiwi and it got so popular that this is the most commonly used Name for it. The real Name of the Fruit is Chinese gooseberry
  • its closest Relative is the extinct Elephant Bird from Madagascar
  • Maori Hunters learned to immitate the Calls of the Kiwi to hunt it
  • Kiwis can run up to 12 miles per hour
  • even though it is a Bird, its Bones aren't hollow
  • it mostly navigates by smelling, feeling and listening
  • when Kiwis feel threatened they freeze which makes them less noticeable by flying Predators
  • Kiwis have great Memory. They can remember Things for up to five Years

I do absolutely agree that we are in desperate Need of Waterfowl. I think we do at least need a temperate Duck and a tropical Duck.
Also that Pack sounds interesting
  • Italian Grey Wolf
  • Italian Grey Wolf
  • Italian Grey Wolf
  • Italian Grey Wolf
  • Italian Grey Wolf
  • Mallard Duck🙃🦆
I'd buy it🙃

I call it the duckduckwolf dlc. ;)

  • it would be our first nocturnal Bird
  • it's a Bird that nests in Burrows
  • it would be our first New Zealand Animal (except invasive Species like the Fallow Deer)
  • except the little spotted Kiwi all Species are vulnerable
  • we still need more Birds
  • it has a very unique Appeareance with its Fur like Feathers and its very long Beak that has the Nostrils at the End instead of the Base like most other Birds
  • it is a relatively small Animal
  • it is the smallest living Ratite. We would have the biggest and smallest existing Ratites then (the biggest one that isn't extinct yet is the Ostrich)

The game needs more nocturnal animals.

The game needs more animals from Oceania.

The game needs more habitat birds.

The game needs more "small habitat animals".

And the Kiwi checks every single box.

Honestly at this point I'd buy a complete wolf pack as well. Split the timber wolf into the Northwestern and Eurasian wolf in a free update, and give us the Mexican, red, and Indian wolves in a small, cheap "Wolf Pack" DLC. ;)

The Red Wolf isn't even a Subspecies. It is a separate Species. Would be nice to have all of them in the Game. I love being able to choose between Subspecies or similar Species so not every Zoo will have the same Animal

The Red Wolf isn't even a Subspecies.
It's a disputed taxonomy. There are reputable scientists who don't even believe it's an actual animal, but rather the result of hybridisation between wolves and feral dogs. In any case it's similar enough to the other wolves that it would be included in such a pack.

I agree with the rest. I was fantasising the other night about random little packs of subspecies - Sumatran, Malayan, South China tiger, Eurasian, Syrian, Kodiak brown bear, etc.

Wasn't the Theory that they might've evolved from Hybrids between Wolves and Coyotes instead of Wolves and feral Dogs?

I'd definitely buy all of them if they would make Packs like that

I hope we will see kiwi in one point of the game! Its really basic to code: Like the cassowary or the ostrich. Also could represent new zealand in an oceania animal pack.
Also one question: New Zealand and Australia are the only countries in the world that had kiwis in captivity?

I wonder why kiwis are rare in zoos outside Oceania. Are them difficult to keep in captivity?
Don't know if that Information is outdated but if it is still true, only 5 Zoos outside of New Zealand bred them successfully. I think Animals also only get rarely exported from Australia and New Zealand

Thanks. I have never seen kiwis in zoos. Actually I have seen few Oceania animals in my Life except kangaroos, Wallabies or koalas.

I saw keas in loro parque, tenerife 5 years ago.

@Urufu1997 : In which zoos were kiwis?
Keas are great. So nice looking, smart and impudent. Learned that they mainly build their Nests in Rock Crevices. Looks really nice in the Aviary I've built for them yesterday.

I think San Diego Zoo is one of the Zoos that successfully bred Kiwis (not completely sure about that one though). Frankfurt Zoo and Smithsonian National Zoo also bred them. Seems like the Boston Zoo also bred them. There was also one born in Memphis Zoo. Also in Avifauna Bird Park in the Netherlands. Taronga Zoo also bred them successfully. Also in Auckland Zoo. Zlín Zoo in the Czech Republic also breeds them. Maybe it just wasn't common Knowledge how to breed them a few Years ago. Don't know if there's a complete List of Zoos that successfully breed them. Found all of those while searching on Google.
They get stressed very easily so the best Way to let them breed is to have the Breeding Pair behind the Scenes😉
You can look up here where they are currently kept but I think US Zoos aren't listed there. Probably also some other Countrys https://www.zootierliste.de/en/?klasse=2&ordnung=201&familie=20105

It's because they're crucially important to New Zealand's conservation efforts. They're exported very sparingly. It's not worth the risk of sending them overseas most of the time.
