Essential Small Mammals META-WISHLIST: No Enclosure Type Restrictions

Thread Closed: Not open for further replies.
To continue the nice tradition on the forum, let's link all Meta-Wishlists first:
@random goat's thread of essential Habitat Animals https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/new-20-essential-habitat-animals-meta-wishlist.582340/
@Spiderhawk's thread of essential Aviary Animals https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/essential-aviary-animals.565435/
@yoav_r's thread of essential Aquatics https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/25-aquatic-animal-meta-wishlist.591432/

So here's the deal. Since Small Mammals are usually out of bounds for both Exhibit and Habitat Meta-Wishlists, I have decided to create an entirely new thread for this underrepresented category. We might never get Mammals smaller than what we have now, but at least this thread will help communicate out-of-category community wishes.

1. Lists of 15-30 will be accepted.
2. Must be a Small Mammal. Other small animals will not be accepted as their respective threads already accept them.
3. Must be under 2 kg. Ideally the average adult size of both or either one of the sexes should be under 2 kg, but submissions for species with adult size ranges that meet this requirement will be accepted, e.g. a species that ranges 1,8-3,4 kg as an adult. For the exception to this rule, see post.
4. No enclosure type restrictions. You might consider your choices to be Habitat, Exhibit, Aviary or any other undefined category you wish.
5. Lists can include choices that are accepted as Habitat, Exhibit or Aviary Animals in other threads.
6. No more than 3 animals for each species group/type that will be displayed in the same row.

If certain choices are taxonomically closely related and share a common name, they will be listed together in the same row.

All added to the Meta-Wishlist!

After speaking to our current contributors, I have made small changes to the rules:

3. The weight limit has been increased to 2 kg and an exception to this rule has been added. The exception to the rule is, if a species group, or "type" is represented by more than one accepted member and therefore has a type category open, e.g. Armadillo, then species that slightly exceed this limit will be accepted, as long as the lower limit of the adult size range isn't more than double the allowed figure. For instance, Giant Armadillo, which weighs 18-60 kg, will not be accepted, but a species that ranges 3,5-6 kg will be accepted. The reason why such an exception had to be created is, when a species group is available, community members can already vote for "Any" in a species group, which automatically makes other species available. To avoid people being forced into submitting choices defined as "Any", just for this reason alone, I have added an exception to the rule.

6. No more than 3 animals for each species group/type that will be displayed in the same row.

@QuokkaMolé @RedPandaReggie @12344321 the following choices can not be added to this Meta-Wishlist due to the current rules:
  1. Little Penguin and Elongated Tortoise, because they aren't mammals.
  2. Dusky Pademelon (5-18 kg), Kirk's Dik-Dik (4-6 kg), Asian Small-Clawed Otter (2,4-5,4 kg), Tasmanian Devil (5-14 kg), South African Springhare (2,5-4,0 kg), Tamandua (3,2-7,0 kg), because they are too big or don't have relatives sharing a common name that are less than 2 kg for a type entry to be opened.
  3. Sunda Pangolin (3-10 kg), despite the fact that it has a relative that it shares a common name with which ranges from under 2 kg, the Tree Pangolin, a type entry still can not be opened since the common name Pangolin already has representation in the game. However you can change this choice to Tree Pangolin.
The following choices can be added despite being over 2 kg:
  1. White-Nosed Coati (2,5-12 kg) and Arctic Hare (2,5-5,5 kg), since they have relatives they share a common name with which range from under 2 kg, therefore a type entry can be opened for these two.
  2. Echidna, even though the smallest species typically weighs over 2 kg, the Tasmanian subspecies is smaller, therefore warrants a type entry.
I haven't updated the list yet. You can still change any of these invalid choices with something else and I can add them to the list.

I tried to stick with animals which have an established presence in Zoological collections. I also double checked the adult weights and all come in under 2kg. I'll admit that I'm fudging it a bit by going with the low-range weight on the Virginia opposum because they are one of the most size variable mammal species, but I would like that reflected by having absolutely tiny 0% size gene individuals if we ever got them in game.

All added except for the exclusions mentioned in my previous post and @joe28392's Jungle Cat and African Civet, since they are too big.

Although I had commented on the Pademelon submission that it can't be added, I found a new source describing Red-Necked Pademelon females ranging as low as 1,8 kg. This allowed me to create a type entry for Pademelons, allowing the Dusky Pademelon submission to be accepted.

Soon I will add a new spoiler for rejected submissions, so it will be easier for new participants to have a better idea about what is accepted and what is not.

For any of the rejected submissions, if participants are able to show me proof that the species actually have a size range that complies with the rules, I will add them to the list. It should be a properly sourced publication and not Wikipedia or an unsourced website.

  1. Cape genet: Less known, yet pretty common in zoos.

I'm afraid some of the small mammals I want are more sort of, vague gestures in the direction of a group of animals rather than pinning down an individual species, but I do feel that there are a lot of underrepresented groups out there! So here we go, in no particular order
  1. Tenrec (any sp. but I'm partial to the Lowland streaked tenrec for its vibrant yellow stripes)
  2. Hedgehog (any sp. but the European Hedgehog might be nice for expanding that geographical region)
  3. Mole rat (naked or otherwise! Not sure how feasible an animal that spends the majority of time underground would be but they're fun little creatures)
  4. Golden lion tamarin, (but any callitrichid monkey would be fun)
  5. Any Lorisid (loris, potto, or angwantibo)
  6. Agouti (any sp.)
  7. Platypus
  8. Yellow mongoose (they'd get a species enrichment bonus with the meerkats)
  9. Quokka (not 100% sure if they meet the weight requirements here, but if they do I'd like to see 'em!)
  10. Any small mustelid (weasels/stoats/polecats/martens etc)
  11. Spiny mouse (any sp.)
  12. Sand cat
  13. Bats (any sp.)
  14. Indian giant squirrel (or any other arboreal squirrel species)
  15. Solenodon (any sp.)
  16. Quoll (any sp.)
  17. Sugar glider
  18. Andean porcupine (or any other small tree porcupine)
  19. Armadillo (any sp. that matches the size requirements here, but especially the Southern three-banded)
  20. Lesser mouse-deer
  21. Any applicable Leporid (there's definitely some small ones in there, though my favourite species would probably be the brown hare, which is too big for this list!)
