Lost Ark?

Yeah i know. Its the kids game of month. Decided to give it a try because diablo + mmo is something i always wanted and never got from blizzard themselves.

The first few minutes are quite cringy being eastern fantasy.. but it grows on you surprisingly. Not that bad. The combat feels good, but i wish they gave you the skills one by one. I guess it plays differently so its probably okay.

Like frontier games, i think it definitely tastes better at lower cost, so take the free option. If i paid for it and had expectations it wouldn't be worth a forum post probably.

Havent had to queue yet either, but i picked a new server that probably noone wants to play on.

Hee hee though. Seems fun so far :) Keeping it free will be the critical success factor i think. Maybe the odd skimpy outfit here or there.. maybe.

Quite a few of my lot are playing it...but the whole ARPG thing just leaves me cold so it's not likely anything I'd even try out.

I fell in.

  • Its like diablo and guild wars had a baby that turned out like wow (and probably a mobile phone game later on, not there yet).
  • The hardest part is picking your class. The problem is its released as a 4 year old game, so the onboarding experience doesn't really work for fresh players. You're given a bunch of abilities, which naturally makes you look for a rotation, but it takes about 5 levels before you stop oneshotting everything, so are wondering why there isn't just one kill button before it. You also need to find a class where the asthetic and abilities and complexity appeals to you. There's one class that is bad just because of sound effects. More distressing than it sounds. But if you make it through this... the problem flips. I have 2 classes that i absolutely love and can't decide which to get to max level on. I bet all the other classes are just as good when you first start you have to narrow your focus somehow.
  • Keep the game free. The cash shop stuff is from a different culture to western service games, its primarily character specific rather than account specific. I think i'll go for skimpy outfits / mounts / pets and basic capability like character slots. Just looking at all the other stuff is disheartening, the best approach is to not consider it absolutely. If they completely revamp the cash shop to make it actually western will reconsider but prevention of upset will be better than cure here.
  • If you don't like the asian fantasy genre, the presentation is so good you blend into it quickly enough. As soon as you find that class you're hooked.

Its just so nice to be playing a game where the entire experience is not anchored on "coping". The space genre is messed up.

Because of the release of the trailer for the new Lord of the Rings series, I'm back in a fantasy mood. I jumped into Elder Scrolls Online and I am enjoying my time with it. The funny thing is that after a bunch of hours in that MMORPG, I reached the same conclusion as you! What is it about the space genre that befuddles devs? I marvel at the amount of detail and depth of gameplay mechanics in ESO. Such a high standard of quality! I shudder to think what it would look and play like if it was a space game...

We may find out in November when and if Starfield appears...it's Bethesda so there's a good chance it may have something worth playing in there somewhere amidst all the bugs. Not an MMO though...of which I'm glad, seems dev houses are all jumping on the bandwagon to produce endless multiplayer tat and forgetting about the storylines that make games and gaming memorable :)

The questing is good isn't it? ;) I still can't seem to shake eso as my other regular game. Yeah its so tragic that defenders here claim that service games are all poor quality.. the moment you play a real one it becomes apparent they're actually above average because they couldn't hold face to regular monetisation with buggy software... the world outside just doesn't work that way.

ps. Trick with eso is to really slow down the button pushes to trigger abilities. Its closer to waiting for the animation to finish visually before pressing the next button rather than quick mashing. One of eso's foibles is it will let you survive playing the combat in unfun ways. I restarted many times before it made sense. Recommend the warden or nightblade if the class you're playing just seems boring. The inverse is play the templar if you want a super basic i win button class.

Yeah im waiting for starfield also. Will probably need to finally upgrade my gaming pc for it.. or just get it on console. Hopefully a ps4 pro will have a decent experience with it.

Im kinda hoping there will be some decent space content. At a bare minimum it will be mass effect.. but they calling it "starfield" so hopefully there's some real link between the name and what they're building. They could have called it starscrolls or something. But they decided "field". Fingers crossed.

Yeah, I am very intrigued by what Bethesda will bring to the table. They're not saints either, but their record, by and large, is a very good one.

Yes it is! Like Skyrim (which I really need to reinstall and finish one day), it is a wonderfully immersive RPG with so much to do and see. You would think that the typical space game's reliance on procgen would make it easier for devs to work on other content, resulting in an all-round higher quality experience. But it never seems to work out that way, does it?

I made that realization last night! I noticed that I was getting better results by slowing down with the special abilities. I appreciated that as I hate button mashing. :)

That is what I am hoping for, too!

I wish you all the fun in the world in eso. If you can make it past the functional but unfun combat stage its amazing. Everything is just right for a themepark mmo, even the monetization. Since microsoft bought them out, they even made it possible to grind for gambling cosmetics. The rate is pitiful, but if you target one 100 gem item every few months, the grind for reward experience is quite worthwhile. The top mounts will take too long, and the lesser items its probably better to actually gamble but for the guaranteed currency and get those that way. Sorry i long ago stopped playing multiplayer in mmo's because that takes too long, so all i do is questing and cosmetics. You can solo non dlc world bosses with crafted endgame gear so that's where i stopped.

Yeah well with elite, given the lack of output the only thing you're left doing is assuming the reasons of blame or excuses, which isn't profitable.
