The sun - a gently glowing orange ball ?

Hi folks!
I love E:d for the feeling of being out there.
I still try to get in my mind how incredibly big everything is - flying in SC faster than light (wow!:D) and its still like a relaxed walk (...until you see a planet coming, and whoosh:eek:, its gone).

When i´m , lets say 149.600.000 km away from the sun, i cant look at it, its so bright, it hurts in my eyes.
With E:d we can get close to the sun.
It should look gigantic, like pure energy and intolerable bright - but it looks just like a nice orange ball
(ok it already feels like a dangerous ball, because of the good soundfx).
At best it looks as big as a planet, but it should be around 100 times bigger.

Any idea, how FD could achieve this?

Sometimes realism has to take a back-seat to game-play. FD appear to want to get everything *as* real as possible, but *not* at the expense of game-play. If you jumped in to a system and were physically unable to see, then... yes, the forums would be awash more than they are already!!

Its because of how far away you are. The planets look the same size because of the much closer distance you can get to them. You are light seconds away from the sun when you look at it, but Kms away from planets.

I have the same problem and made a similar thread. The suns feel small because of this. What would solve it maybe is letting you get closer to the sun.

Sun scale accurate?

I mean, the size of the sun(s) really look like they are far from as big as they should be?

Yeah, on earth we see a mountain with tiny trees , so the mountain must be huge.
But in space its hard to find something like this ...

It sort of goes without saying that our canopy and emergency life support face mask visor both are equipped with ultra violet protection layers that allow us to be near the stars and look at them.

Satisfies realism and game play.

In terms of size... Well, they're as big as they actually are so not much to be done there. They feel small because you can move so fast. Try traveling around a sun at 30km/s then get back :)

Yes, yes they are. You are however, still rather far away from them when you exit hyperspace, and out there in space, without any reference the distance and size of objects is really hard to judge.

When Im mining next to a sun It does feel big.
if I use the oculus dk1 it gives me the feeling of beening in a tin can next to a fire. Too chicken to try fuel scoops. :(

OK, so the sun's aren't 'huge' just because you can't get very close to them at the moment. Any closer and the heat/radiation would do stuff to you. Maybe we'll see 'Sunshine' style ships later ???

And as for brightness, I'd say that's your ship's canopy dimming them deliberately. Maybe try facing sun after losing combat with a smashed canopy? I'd expect the sun to completely white you out. If it doesn't I'd cry 'immersion breaker' ;^)

Put this theory to a test. Ignore your ships sensors and the obvious destruction of your ship and hurtle towards the sun at full speed and then observe you monitor as the Sun fills your screen, followed by the destruction of your ship and your death as you turn into Mr Crispy Chip.

Though an easy way is to look at the HUD check the distance from your ship to the sun and not judge the size by only looking at a yellow round circle on your screen.

Here is better to look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellar_classification#Spectral_types

without 3d its impossible to know the size. in real life when you close 1 eye and look at something your brain didnt learn before and is an unknown shape you also have no idea how big or how far its away..

you cannot GPS with one satellite either.. its a math thing ;)

You're wrong. Everything is in its real size... you're just too far away. If you get too close your ship goes bang because of the heat... try it

When you're traveling at superluminal speeds your perception of how large things are is distorted. Drop out of supercruise next to a star or planet and you'll see.

Part of the problem is that stars up close don't seem that bright. There are visual and acoustic tricks that the team can use to create a visual sense of size and heat without whiting out the screen.

I believe everything is accurate - i just wanted some brain storming how you they could make me experience the ridiculous size of suns (without dying, preferably)

In space we have no fixed reference point to judge the scale of such massive objects, believe me the Elite galaxy really is 1:1 scale , You could certainly fly in closer to a star but would burn up pretty quick, as far as brightness, crank up your gamma! seriously though it's all about gameplay, just believe your ship has a special window tinting system that blocks out glare, My Cobra looks cooler wearing sunglasses ;)
