FPS currently is an arcade jump'n'run game

The on foot experience is far from realistic gameplay, After some engineering it feels like an arcade game. like Doom or Quake if you remember. Engineering and jetpacks are breaking the on foot experience.
Armour and weapons upgrades should add only slots and no any additional damage or resistance.
Jetpacks should not allow in air direction change and shooting. The should be only to get you on roofs or high places.

It's a jetpack, not a spring, we aren't following a ballistic trajectory with jet packs, that's the entire point of them, if you are going that way you may as well have jump pads like quake and other games used to employ. Doing what you envisage would just make it more like the old doom and quake games, jet packs are, in essence, maneuverable thruster packs.

While I sympathise with the complaint that it feels more like an arcade game, that I suspect is the way FDEV intended to go with this particular iteration of legs. I would have preferred a "sneaking around in the dark corridors of abandoned megaships expecting any moment to be surprised by a long maddened inhabitant or even, shudder, a Thargoid" type game play with legs. That sort of thing will come eventually I hope, but the current crop of combat appears to be designed to attract just those sort of arcade FPS players

Spaceships don't fly like WW2 dogfighters either, the reason we have the flight model that we do is because the devs thought a fun game was more important than a strictly """""realistic""""" one.

And I agree with them. I've seen all sorts of awful decisions getting pushed forth in various indie games as sacrifices to the altar of "realism", most of which make the game a tedious chore, and if you're lucky then someone releases a mod within a week that gets rid of it for you.

I have a lot of problems with the Odyssey on-foot gameplay, but the general functionality of the rocket packs isn't one of them. Suits have maneuvering thrusters, and need to for microgravity conditions that we may never get, but which are implicit in many scenarios.

I'm looking forward to the eventual potential EVA gameplay where you can't actually control your direction in space.

Well, I don’t know if jetpacks are in perfect state right now but the on-foot experience is not just bad, it is horrible. it is unrealistic. I feel like I am playing Quake. Flying and shooting around with no danger at all. I am sorry but in some other games (SC) every bullet counts and one wrong move can decide the outcome.

Very much this. For me it starts with wondering why the suits have such a low oxygen supply, copying the resist system from space, etc... i could make a long list of things which i feel to be wrong. Before even starting why i could not care less for Odyssey at all. But the thrusters do make sense.

Quake was a good game.

What annoys me the most is the constant switching of weapons from kinetic to thermal. Plasma weapons also annoy me with the flight time of the projectile. I could use the Scorpion, but the spread of his cannon is just as annoying. I'm so annoyed that I get even more annoyed.

I'm still waiting on the station bartenders to serve me a simple drink in Fallout style. Why is it whenever I visit the bar the NPC doesn't have any radioactive beer?
Or some Spacer's Choice cuppa Joe even? Fail FDev. :devilish:

I dont know any FPS that isn't a bit arcade-like for movement. My favourite is ArmA of course, since I can walk forward, but also look around (not cheating by using strafe), you know, like a person can. A lot of FPS games dont have that, including the ultra-immersive (except all the fine bits) SC. The reason FPS's are like that is because, in reality, our eyes and mind are doing a lot of compensating, for all the side to side/up and down movement that goes on while taking steps. Life, itself, "arcades" the view for you so it's not the jumbled mess it actually is. But if you watch some animals, even cats, as they sneak up on prey, their head is almost perfectly aligned with its target. Snakes are awesome like that too. People? People suck. The closest we get are like biathalon types, and even they have trouble, while breathing heavy etc, aiming to hit their target. Could you see a cat with a sniper rifle? They'd never miss.

Otherwise, the movement in Odyssey is really good, I find. You dont get caught up on object edges, where other FPS's that can happen. The reason we can change direction is should be the jetpack. Apparently even after jetpack is depleted, you can change direction by looking left or right and holding forward, but if you dont hold forward, you will not change direction while in a jump, jetpack energized or not. I have a feeling if the jetpack is depleted, you should not be able to change direction. Something else to add to their list maybe!

ED suits use shields, similar to the ships, and also have a high level of armour. It's so opponents have a chance to get away, but there are weapons you can shoot a couple times and your enemy is down. I havent tried walking around without a suit on but it would be interesting to see if you walk into a CZ with just the flight suit on, you go critical with one shot. If that doesn't happen now, add it to the list too.

I really expect we will one day get EVA in space, just wondering how the transition will be seeing as we don't yet have airlocks and doors, just appear in space in a blue sphere transporter style?

I actually heard some NPC chatter complaining about the poor drink selection, "it's like serving drinks is a secondary concern"

not

Not even Nuka Cola
Or a single irradiated drop of Sunset Sarsaparillas or coltan infused Vim Captain's Blend on ice!

This blatant level of disrespect after all these years is utterly gobsmacking. Given all that radiation your newly acquired, poor space legs is pressed into enduring on a daily basis. Especially after being forced into carrying your parched derriere around, sampling alien flora on all those rocky planets! And don't get me started with the ongoing supply chain shortages of Sol imported Ground Mole Rat stew or Gulper Slurry. 🤬😡🤬

Yea! Move that material trade to a trader somewhere, and give us actual bars!

Then also give us emotes which are emotional! Not "point" and "salute" and other things from the army training grounds, but perhaps also stuff from the army watering hole. Wild emotes, dances, etc. (And not just "one step left, one step right, rinse and repeat" dances. But options like headbanging, YMCS, gangnam style, floss, macarena, etc. )

Turn the "social space" into social space! The game does still have player operated radio stations. Finally give them the party places they need! :)
