Ability to pick up heavy objects and put them in vehicles by hand

I would like the ability to walk up to canisters or ore or manufactured bits and carry them individually over to my srv or ship cargo hatch instead of having to drive my srv over them one by one to get them in my ship, given all walking in game is in 0.1g or under areas i also could see it being plausible rationally

being able to pick them up would also help getting some of them out of tight spots that srvs cant reach

Shades of SC, have you watched the videos on picking stuff up? But I do sympathise, mats are essentially magic objects, they apparently have no mass, they take no storage space, and yet I can shoot them off a plant with a handgun but must be in my SRV to pick them up, at which point they turn into magic because they are not actually stored on the SRV. When I move from the SRV to the ship they move with me to be on the ship, when I swap ships they move with me to be on that ship, so essentially they are in some magic invisible personal backpack I carry around with me, so why can't I just pick them up directly while on foot and pop them in that backpack?

Ok we have to extend the cargo scoop to collect them so that may be a blocker, and picking up stacks of stuff by hand and storing it would probably be immersion breaking for some players, but I would suggest picking up 1 at a time up and having them transferred to ship or SRV storage when you board would make some sense in this case because there are times when I have had to get out to shoot off a particularly difficult mat, and then get back in the SRV to try and drive over it to pick it up, so shooting one off and picking it up to put it in the SRV should be possible.

i dont think it'd be necessarily like SC, ive played it and frankly to me that game feels.. tedious? like it felt drawn out and slow i guess, elites on foot stuff feels very snappy and fun instead and its that sort of feeling i'd like as well, because otherwise what you say is what i mean! my clarity about the idea came from these things

it really gives me the feeling that like if i can only make these canisters accessible by using on-foot means (where shooting the canister holder in the srv also breaks it too but if you do that before breaking the holders lock on foot you lose the majority of possible things to collect) that i cant interact with them at all to me is what felt unimmersive! like i expected even just the ability to kick them about until they pop into my srv under an extended cargo scoop or something or maybe as you say have the ability to only be able to pick one up into my on foot inventory at a time, but instead there's no interaction? none! it feels off!

i admit i was kind of hoping when i started playing odyssey (only recently) that when about on a planet picking up raw materials that if i wanted to go for a little walk as well that i could hop out of my srv and wander about picking them up one at a time as i transfer them over to the srv as i can with the suit materials stuff, like that would definitely be slower and not necessary at all as i could drive my srv over them and that'd be quicker, but it just felt like i should be able to for some reason? like with your idea of it helping with collecting a particularly tricky raw material, where having then played SC for a bit after getting odyssey to see what id be missing if it did exist, SC really felt different and not like what i was imagining elites gameplay suggests itd be like at all

Yeah those are a bit funny, but I can see the logic in how they work. The extra stuff we get when we cut them open is Odyssey stuff, because you have to have legs to get them, the single one you get from shooting is Horizons stuff because you can only get them by shooting from the SRV, so these work both for Horizons and Odyssey. However, yes with the picking up, in theory you should only need to carry them close enough to the SRV for the scoop to grab them, but picking things up by hand in space games, any games, has always been.......a difficult thing to do successfully. And when I mean successfully I don't mean it's hard to animate, many games do it, but that activity does seem to be basically pretty boring, like the SC one of waiting for packages, carrying them to the ship, walking back, grabbing another one. It seems almost entirely designed to demonstrate the actual mechanic to players and not an activity of choice. I mean if there was actually good game loops in SC would anyone do that picking up and carrying garbage?

I too would like the fancy physics engine this game does actually appear to have somewhere applied to interacting with physical objects as physical objects, rather than as abstract constructs in the arbitrarily limited mini-themepark rides that serve as a poor excuse for gameplay.

The amount of things that separates Horizons and Odyssey content certainly produces this disjointed experience - a totally separate set of ground settlements, whilst old ones are left as they were; Separate mission boards that can only be accessed from repectively one's ship, or a terminal, and so on; And even where things do cross the lines, it "paradoxically" often manages to only reinforce the sense of separation, such as the SRV HUD highlighting nearby Odyssey occluded interactable objects at a bit of range, while the on-foot HUD does not. :7
