Insurance claim for unattended ship?

So I was running a reboot settlement mission the other day. Got the usual warning about Scavengers on take off. I headed to the settlement, waited for the scavs to drop from their dropships (2 ships worth) and then took them all out with dumbfires. Orbited the settlement a couple of times to check I'd got them all, then requested docking and landed on the pad.

I was in the process of installing the power regulator when I got the "ship under attack" message. I ran outside and took out all the scavs, but not before they'd managed to destroy my ship (I was in my relatively poorly armoured Dolphin bubble taxi). I completed the rest of the mission, then called in an Apex shuttle to get me back to the outpost I'd picked up the mission from and handed the mission in. No issues so far.

However, when I went to the lift, it said I had no ship stored there (obviously, since it was in pieces on the surface of a nearby moon!), but being an outpost there was no shipyard / Inter Astra to interact with. Worried that I might lose my precious Dolphin (which although under armoured, has G5 Dirty Drags etc), I quit the game and rebooted in Horizons (logic being that I would HAVE to be placed in my most recently used ship) and sure enough on loading into the game, I was presented with a rebuy screen (phew!) and I got my ship back.

My questions are:
  • Surely there is some other way I could have accessed the rebuy screen without having to reboot?
  • Would I have got the rebuy screen if I'd rebooted in Odyssey?
  • What if I'd taken an Apex to another station (where I had another ship stored) and got into that ship? Would I have lost my Dolphin for good?
I'm sure that I'm missing something here? Any info anyone has about this would be very much appreciated :)

If in doubt, park a klick away and drive the SRV in, and your ship will be safe. Or dismiss the ship after unloading the SRV.

I had a Chieftain destroyed by the CAP around a military base when I called it down for pickup (ran 2 km out before calling, didn't help). Took an Apex taxi back to the station. Went to Inter Astra. There I was able to select the Chieftain and choose rebuy. It worked... sort of. When I tried to go down the elevator to my rebought ship, the game crashed. When I logged back in, my Chieftain was still ok, but was still listed as being on the planet where it was destroyed. So I had to pay a small fee to have it transferred to the station. After that, all was fine.

Clearly there is a bug where ships you rebuy weren't also being moved to your current location. Not sure if that is still an issue or not (happened to me in Update 9).

It's been a couple of months, so I might be wrong on some of the minute details.

So to answer your questions:
  1. Yes, as I described above.
  2. No, you would re-appear on foot. You need to do the rebuy at InterAstra on a station.
  3. I don't think so. Can't say for certain, as the there still appears to be some bugs in the loop.

If in doubt, park a klick away and drive the SRV in, and your ship will be safe. Or dismiss the ship after unloading the SRV.

Thanks - yeah I generally do this (and I know the "mistake" I made that lead to my ship being destroyed). My question remains though about how to get a ship back after it has been destroyed when I'm not in it. If I'm in the ship and it gets blown up, I get blown up with it and am presented with a rebuy screen. However since I was still alive, I got no rebuy screen and had to "force" the process by logging out and logging back into Horizons. I was wondering whether there is another method of accessing the rebuy screen in such circumstances?

You need to take the Apex to a station that has Inter Astra (and a shipyard)
From Inter Astra you need to rebuy your ship and have it transferred to your location

got the "ship under attack" message. I ran outside and took out all the scavs

Well, that's where the mistake actually happened - you should have dismissed the ship instead of wasting time to run outside.
Lesson learned i hope :)

Unless it's a military base, with a CAP, and the you make it go hostile. Even with the alarms disabled, a stray shot to a turret or other base structure can make it go red. Then the CAP goes red, and they are very good at blowing up your SRV... and often your ship when you recall it... and even Apex shuttles once you're on board.

If this disastrous situation befalls you, run away (on foot or via SRV) until your about 2-3 km away. That should trigger the checkmark for "Leave Settlement" and not put your mission completion at risk. At that point, you can take the risk of calling down an Apex shuttle and hope it gets away/isn't mass locked before go kaboom. Or you can menu log, log back in, and call down the Apex shuttle safely.

Thanks - that's pretty much what I thought - if there had been an Inter Astra at the station I'd have assumed that I'd have been able to access the rebuy screen from there, but being at an outpost, I didn't have that option. I guess I could have taken another Apex to another station, accessed Inter Astra and got my ship back. Good to know that worked for you (sort of!)

Haha yeah. In fairness, I'm not bothered about the cost of the rebuy, but would have been more than a little annoyed to not have the option at all!

I'd already taken out 10+ scavs using dumbfires from my ship (and waited around for a few mins in case any more turned up), so thought I was safe to park nearby. Oddly enough, the "Scavengers Eliminated" count in the panel at the top-right of the screen showed 0/0, so I guess the mission was bugged and just kept sending scavs?

Good to know - thanks (y)

Also, a warning from my own experience - although it may have been a bug that was corrected in the mean time (no idea and i dont plan to test it)

I also lost my ship on the ground like 2-3 Updates ago, when there was no warning for ship under attack (i checked and now in U10 we do get the warning, although i didnt seen it mentioned in the patch notes :sneaky:).
Then i took an Apex and while in the Apex i decided to relog.

But after the relog i was greeted with the message that my ship was destroyed (duh! i know that) and my commander cannot be loaded (why? i was in an Apex when i logged to the menu)
The only way to get out of this was to open a support ticked and have my CMDR manually moved to a station.

Well that sucks! Thanks for the warning (y)

FWIW, I have an OCD thing about never logging out unless I'm docked / landed. If I'm on my way to Colonia, or on an exploration jaunt, I always find a planet to land on before logging out. That said, since Odyssey I will log out on a station concourse from time to time, but I usually make a point of heading back to my ship before logging out when I've been doing CZs via Frontline, or similar.

I still get careless and occasionally leave my ship in danger, even though after having several destroyed on the ground I should really know better. I kick myself when I let this happen. Fortunately I tend to fly cheap ships in Odyssey.

Well, yea - i can understand that.

I my case it happened during a failed to progress mission (it was also the patch were restore missions were bugged - some of them at least) and my ship was destroyed while i was faffing inside the PWR building trying to do a mission that refused to progress after inserting the PWR.
And by relogging i was trying to see if the mission would progress after the relog - it had a nice reward and i didnt want to simply abandon it

Instead, i got bugged out of the game and by the time Support managed to transfer my CMDR to a station - i already lost all the missions 😒

I can relate... I only picked up Odyssey at the beginning of this year (been playing ED since 2015) and I was frankly shocked at how quickly handheld weapons can take down an unprepared ship. I've lost 3, including the one described in this thread - all Dolphins.

1st one was landed on a pad during a restore the power mission and was down to 20% hull before I even knew what was happening. 2nd one was an utter mystery - I'd dismissed the ship, then recalled it after the mission - it landed about 2km from the settlement and by the time I'd boarded it, it was at 10% hull and blew up with me in it - the settlement wasn't even hostile and there were no other ships or NPCs around - I'd have submitted a ticket, but for <1m rebuy it wasn't worth the hassle.

I've now built a few dedicated "ground attack" ships (Viper IV, FDS and Vulture) with Prismatics and frankly ridiculous amounts of armour, just to give me a fighting chance of saving it whilst under attack!

Yeah that's pretty annoying! And I see why you did that. I was doing a mission the other day to collect something from an abandoned settlement. Whilst at the settlement, I noticed quite a few data points so decided to use one of my stash of power regulators to turn the lights on and grab the data while I was there. Then I picked up the requested item and it didn't register I'd collected it, so I relogged to see if that would update it. It actually worked, but I'd neglected to pick my power regulator up before relogging....

The OP hand weapons vs ships is just silly. They should have made plasma weapons dedicated anti-ship options, or given us a handheld rail gun (with hitscan and delayed shot as usual), then Dominator loadouts could opt for anti-ship capabilities while still having anti-infantry weapons.

The thing that proved deadly for me yesterday was auto-landing on a pad to save time but, while hightailing it out under fire, trying to take off as I would on rough ground. In the about five seconds it took me to realise I should be selecting 'Launch ship' (or was I doing that, but getting the message that auto-launch was disabled because I was under fire?), my shields were gone, and a large part of my hull, and I couldn't get away in time to save the ship.

So unless FDev fix it so that the up direction button always powers up and launches your ship, under fire or not, on a pad or not, or I just learn not to mess up, landing off site will always be safer.

Edit: I suspect my ship was being targeted by a Goliath, which didn't help. IIRC, these aren't so hot with people on foot, but will shred vehicles?

Yeah that's basically what happened to me the first time I lost a ship at an Odyssey settlement, except I didn't even get chance to disembark! Heard the "Shields Down" message while checking the right hand panel, and by the time I was selecting Launch, I was already down to 20% hull.

I've built this and this now to give me a little more time to run away!

Edit: corrected typo

Im using this DBX for Odyssey settlement missions. Long range (can basically cross the bubble if needed), solid shields, back entrance (so shortest possible hangar run), solid weapons, 2x SRV

When you know scavs are occupying a settlement, it is fun to ask for permission to land at the LP, quickly deploy the SRV on landing, get it moving away and dismiss the ship. Then turn around and blast the scavs that were firing at you. Ever so much fun!
